Transform reflection and output-storage wrappers currently live inside transform.cu.
They have been moved into another header to allow them to be reused for other JIT implementations like filter_join_indices and reduce (#24445 )

Validation

  • Full libcudf build and all 122 CTest entries pass in the CUDA 13.3 devcontainer using sccache (the default RAPIDS CUDA architecture set).
  • Focused accessor GPU probes and Compute Sanitizer memcheck pass with zero errors.
  • Doxygen passes with warnings as errors.
  • Python package builds and pytest suites were not run.

PR stack

This PR is the first part of the JIT transform split. String/representation access is in #24766; list support is in #24767. Both are dependent drafts.

Checklist

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Transform operations now support fixed-width list inputs and outputs, including child nulls, decimals, dictionary-encoded values, and mixed list/string/fixed-width results.
    • Output specifications can describe child columns and use offsets for both strings and lists.
    • Added PTX support for compiled transform workflows.
    • Added mutable string output support for string-transform UDFs.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved validation and handling of null, sliced, scalar, empty, and all-null transform inputs.

Transform contracts, JIT reflection, and execution now handle recursive list outputs and generalized output offsets. Mutable string views replace CUDA spans in the string-transform path. Integration tests cover list inputs, list outputs, null handling, and unsupported child types.

Changes: Transform List Outputs

Layer / File(s) Summary
Transform contracts and device views
cpp/include/cudf/transform.hpp, cpp/include/cudf/column/column_device_view_base.cuh, cpp/include/cudf/strings/mutable_string_view.hpp, cpp/include/cudf/column/column_child_offsets.hpp, cpp/include/cudf/lists/lists_column_view.hpp, cpp/include/cudf/types.hpp, python/pylibcudf/pylibcudf/libcudf/transform.pxd
Transform specifications now include recursive children and generalized output offsets. Device views add list-row access, mutable string access, and list-aware output helpers.
JIT reflection and output adapters
cpp/CMakeLists.txt, cpp/src/jit/reflect.*, cpp/src/jit/column_views.hpp, cpp/src/jit/column_accessor.cuh, cpp/src/jit/column_device_view_wrappers.cuh, cpp/examples/string_transforms/url_logs/*
JIT reflection builds type names, input and output specifications, and UDF signatures. Output adapters cover fixed-width, string-view, string, and list columns. String-transform outputs now use mutable string views.
List output execution and validation
cpp/src/transform/transform.cu, cpp/tests/transform/integration/unary_transform_test.cpp
Transform execution validates list inputs and outputs, uses generalized output offsets, constructs list columns, and finalizes null rows. Integration tests cover list inputs, outputs, null handling, mixed outputs, and rejected child types.

cpp/include/cudf/column/column_device_view_base.cuh:117
📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Mark the list-element readers [[nodiscard]].

The public-header guideline requires [[nodiscard]] on side-effect-free functions with non-void returns. Add it to the list_element readers and to the readers declared by mutable_list_element. The inherited readers are covered by the annotations on list_element.

117-208: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Add [[nodiscard]] to the new side-effect-free list_element accessors.

size(), empty(), nullable(), is_valid(), is_null(), every element<T>() overload and nullable_element<T>() return a value and have no side effects. These accessors are in the public header cpp/include/cudf/. Their siblings in the same file, such as column_device_view_core::element, already use [[nodiscard]]. Apply the same attribute to mutable_list_element::element<mutable_string_view>() (Line 275) and mutable_list_element::nullable_element<T>() (Line 290).

The mutable_list_element::assign<mutable_string_view> overload (Line 341) also needs @param entries. The mutable_column_device_view_core::assign no-op (Lines 1196-1202) has them.

Proposed fix (excerpt)
-  CUDF_HOST_DEVICE size_type size() const { return size_; }
+  [[nodiscard]] CUDF_HOST_DEVICE size_type size() const { return size_; }
...
-  CUDF_HOST_DEVICE bool empty() const { return size_ == 0; }

...
-  __device__ cuda::std::optional<T> nullable_element(size_type idx) const noexcept
+ [[nodiscard]] __device__ cuda::std::optional<T> nullable_element(size_type idx) const noexcept

As per coding guidelines: "Use [[nodiscard]] on side-effect-free functions with non-void return" and "Doxygen documentation required (@brief, @param, @return, @throw, @tparam)" for cpp/include/cudf/.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Normalize BOOL8 list children before reading them.

If a BOOL8 child stores 0x02, list_element::element<bool>() reads that byte directly as bool. This can cause undefined behavior. The existing column_device_view_core::element<bool>() instead reads a uint8_t and compares it with zero. Apply the same conversion here. (eel.is)
