This adds the objective propagation [1, Section 7.6] procedure on top of #2127 and #2128. It enforces $\mathbf{c}^T \mathbf{x} \leq \hat{z}_c$, where the cutoff $\hat{z}_c$ is computed from the incumbent solution $\hat{\mathbf{z}}$. It first computes the computes the minimum objective $\underline{z}$ over the variables with $c_j \neq 0$ using Dot2 and the same counter for the infinite contributions as the rows. If $\underline{z} > \hat{z}_c + \text{tol}$, the node cannot improve the incumbent and is cut off before its LP is solved. Otherwise, each variable is tightened with the same residual rule as a row, i.e., $c_j x_j \leq \hat{z}_c - (\underline{z} - c_j l_j)$ for $c_j > 0$, and the rows of the tightened variables are then propagated, which may raise $\underline{z}$ again. This alternation runs for at most $3$ rounds.

Includes #2162.

📝 Walkthrough

Branch-and-bound now propagates objective cutoffs before solving node LPs and uses objective-lattice cutoffs for regular and deterministic processing. The node status model uses FATHOMED for infeasible nodes and nodes rejected by the upper bound. Final diagnostics report objective-propagation statistics.

Changes: Objective-aware node pruning

Layer / File(s) Summary
Objective propagation
cpp/src/dual_simplex/domain.hpp, cpp/src/dual_simplex/domain.cpp
The domain tracks objective variables and propagates cutoff-based bounds and affected rows for up to three rounds. It records objective-specific counts and time, and clears pending queues when propagation exits.
Regular node cutoff integration
cpp/src/branch_and_bound/branch_and_bound.hpp, cpp/src/branch_and_bound/branch_and_bound.cpp, cpp/src/branch_and_bound/mip_node.hpp
Regular node solving computes lattice-aware cutoffs and propagates them before simplex. LP cutoff outcomes and infeasible start nodes use FATHOMED; final diagnostics include objective-propagation statistics. The node status enum removes INFEASIBLE.
Deterministic node and diving integration
cpp/src/branch_and_bound/branch_and_bound.cpp, cpp/src/branch_and_bound/deterministic_workers.hpp
Deterministic node processing and diving use the computed cutoff and objective propagation. Infeasible and propagation-rejected nodes use fathomed handling, and the separate infeasible-worker recording path is removed.

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 2e5df

Objective propagation changes how infeasible nodes are recorded, which may let a solve report optimality without a feasible solution when an initial upper bound is supplied. Confirm this path and the earlier open cutoff-rounding concern before merging.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description names the change under review: objective propagation (c^T x <= cutoff) on top of PRs #2127 and #2128. It explains the algorithm: a minimum-objective computation with Dot2, a node cutoff before LP solve, variable tightening by residual rule, row propagation, and a limit of 3 rounds. It also cites Achterberg Section 7.6 and gives MIPLIB2017 benchmark results. The description matches the changeset in domain.cpp/domain.hpp and the branch-and-bound cutoff logic.

cpp/src/grpc/client/grpc_client.cpp: 1

1189-1191: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Remove the was_chunked / chunked_header path, because no code sets it now.

download_chunked_result now always sets result_out.was_chunked = false and stores the rebuilt ResultResponse in result_out.response. It never assigns chunked_header. As a result:

  • These branches cannot run: the dl.was_chunked branches in get_lp_result, get_mip_result, and get_result, and the ternary in get_vrp_result (grpc_client_vrp.cpp, lines 132–133).
  • Each of these branches dereferences *dl.chunked_header, which is now always null.
  • A future change that sets was_chunked = true without setting chunked_header will crash.
  • The downloaded_result_t doc in grpc_client.hpp (lines 486–498) still says that the chunked variant carries a header and an array map.

Delete the dead branches and the two members. The unary-shape response is now the only result shape.

♻️ Sketch
-  result_out.was_chunked = false;
   result_out.chunked_arrays.clear();
-  result_out.chunked_header.reset();
-  if (dl.was_chunked) {
-    result.solution = std::make_unique<cpu_lp_solution_t<i_t, f_t>>(
-      chunked_result_to_lp_solution<i_t, f_t>(*dl.chunked_header, dl.chunked_arrays));
-  } else {
-    result.solution = std::make_unique<cpu_lp_solution_t<i_t, f_t>>(
-      map_proto_to_lp_solution<i_t, f_t>(dl.response->lp_solution()));
-  }
+  result.solution = std::make_unique<cpu_lp_solution_t<i_t, f_t>>(
+    map_proto_to_lp_solution<i_t, f_t>(dl.response->lp_solution()));

Apply the same change in get_mip_result, get_result, and get_vrp_result. Then remove was_chunked and chunked_header from downloaded_result_t.

cpp/src/grpc/grpc_solution_mapper.cpp: 1

226-236: 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🔵 Trivial | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Generate the V2 scalar copy from the registry instead of keeping hand-written field lists.

The registry drives every other LP/MIP solution mapping through generated code. The new V2 download helpers repeat that mapping by hand:

  • copy_lp_result_scalars and copy_mip_result_scalars list each scalar and warm-start scalar.
  • clear_lp_solution_arrays and apply_result_chunk_arrays list each array field.
  • header_has_warm_start checks a numeric range, RESULT_WS_CURRENT_PRIMAL_SOLUTION..RESULT_WS_LAST_RESTART_DUALITY_GAP_DUAL_SOLUTION. This check is correct only if the warm-start ResultFieldId values are contiguous and no non-warm-start ID falls between them.

Today the lists match the worker's cpu_lp_solution_t and cpu_mip_solution_t constructors. Suppose someone later adds a solution scalar, an array, or a warm-start field to field_registry.yaml. The unary path and the legacy chunked path pick it up automatically. The V2 path silently drops it, and only clients whose results exceed the message limit see the difference. If auto-number assigns a new array ID inside the warm-start range, header_has_warm_start returns a wrong answer.

Generate these bodies in generate_conversions.py from the same lp_solution / mip_solution sections that _gen_chunked_header and _gen_chunked_to_solution use. For the warm-start check, emit an explicit list of warm-start ResultFieldId values in place of the range. If generation is too large for this PR, add a unit test. The test should fill every field of a ChunkedResultHeader through the generated populate_chunked_result_header_lp and compare the V2 reconstruction with build_lp_solution_proto.

cpp/src/branch_and_bound/branch_and_bound.cpp:1481
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Major: Keep the lower bound infinite for an infeasible node.

If set_initial_upper_bound(10) supplies a bound without an incumbent, two infeasible children now each receive a lower bound of 10. The search tree propagates 10 to the root. set_final_solution then sees a zero gap and reports OPTIMAL although it has no feasible solution. An integer-infeasible model with a feasible root relaxation can trigger this path. Keep inf for DUAL_UNBOUNDED; reserve the upper bound for CUTOFF. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

As per path instructions, “prioritize correctness of optimization algorithms” and “infeasibility and unboundedness handling.”

Review comment at @cpp/src/branch_and_bound/branch_and_bound.cpp at line 1481:
Update the lower-bound assignment in the node-status handling around
node_ptr->lower_bound so an infeasible node with DUAL_UNBOUNDED retains an
infinite lower bound, while only CUTOFF uses the supplied upper bound. Ensure
set_initial_upper_bound without an incumbent cannot propagate a finite bound
that causes set_final_solution to report OPTIMAL without a feasible solution.
