fix(linux): stop Pulse from dying on a false wall-clock change - #818
On Linux, the Pulse microphone worker can stop with The capture wall clock changed; select the microphone again even when the host clock never stepped. The journal, timedatectl, and a 10-minute CLOCK_REALTIME vs CLOCK_MONOTONIC probe showed no time step; the worst gap between two back-to-back clock reads was 6.27 ms (preemption). After the stop, Clips (and every clip saved from it) carried silence, and the toast said "Microphone stopped: recording continues with silence" although only the buffer-only session was running.
Fix
Verified in code: Pulse called validate_wall(Instant::now(), SystemTime::now()) on every 10 ms packet against a 5 ms tolerance and one clock pair taken at worker start. Those two reads are not atomic. dshow/avf use the same helper far less often.
Bracket the wall sample (monotonic, wall, monotonic); retry when the two monotonic reads are more than 1 ms apart; skip the check if a tight sample cannot be taken.
Confirm a real step only after three consecutive drifts past 5 ms, or one offset past 50 ms. A confirmed step re-takes the clock pair instead of stopping the worker. PulseTimeline already re-anchors on stamps.
Rate-limit the Pulse check to once per second. The per-packet capture instant does not depend on it.
Buffer-only (replayOnly) microphone-loss copy now says Clips continue with silence, never "recording continues with silence".
Tests
Rust: a 6 ms preemption gap is not a clock change; three consecutive 30 ms drifts (or one 50 ms step) re-anchor; ±2.5 ms of synthetic NTP slew for 10 minutes at 1 Hz never confirms. cargo check -p videorc-backend --tests passed here. Linking the full backend test binary OOM'd on this VM; CI should run cargo test -p videorc-backend.
Renderer: microphoneLossPresentation with replayOnly: true uses activity clips and the title does not contain "recording continues with silence".
Typecheck and the session-runtime notice tests passed.
Not verified here (needs real Linux hardware)
60-minute Pulse worker during a concurrent 1080p OpenH264 encode with stress-ng --cpu on the same cores: no worker stop; Capture worker interval diagnostics keeps counting (#[ignore]pulse_worker_keeps_delivering_from_a_real_source).
2-hour Clips buffer-only session with a PipeWire tone mic; every saved clip has the tone.
A real wall-clock step (manual date jump) still re-anchors and keeps delivering PCM.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Microphone-loss notices now clarify when Clips continue with silence, distinguishing them from recordings that continue.
Audio capture now tolerates brief clock variations, reducing the chance that a single timing offset interrupts capture.
Large clock changes or sustained timing drift trigger a fresh clock reference, helping capture continue reliably.
The Pulse mic worker ran validate_wall on every 10 ms packet against a 5 ms
tolerance and unbracketed Instant/SystemTime reads. A 6 ms preemption gap
between those reads stopped the worker even though the clock never stepped.
Bracket the sample, require a persistent or 50 ms step before treating it as
a clock change, re-take the pair instead of stopping, and rate-limit the
Pulse check to 1 Hz. Buffer-only Clips copy no longer says a recording
continues with silence.

Walkthrough
The renderer now classifies replay-only sessions as Clips activity and displays phase-specific microphone-loss notices. Audio capture now classifies wall-clock offsets and can re-anchor its clock pair after a confirmed step.

Explanation
The title names the Linux Pulse fix and the false wall-clock change it addresses, which matches the main change in the audio_capture_adapter.rs clock validation logic. It is short, specific, and follows a conventional commit style. The title does not mention the replay-only Clips notice change, which is a secondary part of the PR.

Clear capture anchors after a wall-clock re-anchor.
observe_wall can replace clock_pair while CaptureClock.anchors still contains anchors created with the old pair. After a confirmed wall step, the next Pulse anchor can move backward relative to the previous anchor. CaptureClock::push can then stop the worker with Capture clock regressed or Capture clock mapping is discontinuous.
Add a Pulse test that feeds records across a confirmed 30 ms wall step and expects continued PCM delivery.

Build: local integration of this branch + #817 + #819 on origin/main4339122, release backend, Clips buffer-only session with the Pulse microphone = PipeWire 440 Hz test source.
The false trip is real and this fixes it. A side-by-side probe (clockdrift2.py) ran the old check (one mono/wall pair per 10 ms packet, fail at > 5 ms) and this PR's check (bracketed sample ≤ 1 ms, 1 Hz, step = > 50 ms once or 3 consecutive > 5 ms) on the same host for 20 min under 12 busy loops + a concurrent 1080p30 OpenH264 encode:
old check
this PR
worst gap between the two clock reads
6.33 ms
—
would have stopped the worker
1× (offset 6.32 ms = the preemption gap, no clock change)
0 re-anchors, 0 loose samples skipped of 1,194 checks
A second 20-min run with 6 busy loops: worst gap 2.37 ms, old 0, new 0.
In the app: about 70 min of Pulse-worker time across three runs (12-loop stress, 6-loop stress, and an idle Clips soak during pnpm typecheck + a 63-minute debug cargo build). No "The capture wall clock changed" stop, and Capture worker interval diagnostics kept counting with pcm_gap_frames low. The 60-minute single-session target wasn't reachable on this laptop: under load 30+ the encoder bridge exceeds its frame-delivery budget and ends the session (Encoder FIFO write exceeded the complete-frame delivery budget) after 1–26 min. That is a capacity limit and unrelated to this PR. #823 fixes the Clips re-arm it exposed.
replayOnly copy: not hit in these runs (no mic loss happened), covered by the unit test.
Pushed
0b7f45c (earlier): clippy collapsible_if + the now test-only validate_wall (macOS dead_code), so the Linux gate passes.
bfd5a1a: warn! "Capture wall clock moved; the capture clock pair was re-taken" with offset_us when a step is confirmed. The re-take was silent before. With the log I could rule this PR out for the occasional "Microphone buffers keep arriving but none could be placed" warnings seen under load: those also happen with zero re-takes logged, and once on unpatched main in the 148 run.
