Why

In a full native run on a busy machine, empty-format-default, external-settings-change and global-var-autocomplete failed: the Settings button they click was not in the main window. settings-popout-save turns on Obsidian's settingsPopoutWindow with app.vault.setConfig and restores it afterwards. setConfig also writes app.json a second later, and Obsidian reloads app.json when it changes on disk. Under load it reloaded its own late write after the restore, so every later spec opened Settings in a popout.

What changed

  • setVaultConfig in tests/e2e/uiHelpers.ts sets a vault option in memory, without writing app.json. Every native spec that changed a vault option now uses it, and daily-note-token drops its saveConfig workaround for the same race.
  • tests/e2e-vault-config.test.ts fails when a spec under tests/e2e calls setConfig, saveConfig or requestSaveConfig.

Scope

Test code only, no release. It leaves out settings-popout-save's own disk check, which still fails under load (#2213), and the menu specs that always fail on macOS because Obsidian uses native menus there.

Verification

  • Repro before the fix: a full native run at load ~100 failed exactly the five tests from the issue. A loop of settings-popout-save then the three specs under load ended with settingsPopoutWindow: true and the same errors. Alone, setConfig(true) then setConfig(false) ended true in 3 of 8 tries under load, 0 when idle.
  • After the fix: two full native runs at load 11 to 180 passed all 9 tests of the three specs, including one where settings-popout-save failed first. The other failures in those runs are in specs this change does not touch. Most fail the same way on master on this Mac.
  • pnpm run build, pnpm run lint and pnpm run test pass. The new guard fails when one setConfig or saveConfig () call is put back.

Fixes #2207

Note

Set vault options in memory in E2E tests so restore holds under load

  • Adds setVaultConfig in uiHelpers.ts that writes vault options directly on the in-memory vault configuration, avoiding Obsidian's persisting configuration setter
  • Migrates all E2E specs that used direct vault configuration mutation or save calls (conditional-branch-persistence, daily-note-token, drag-pill-bounds, package-import-*, prompt-cancellation, script-picker-paths, script-syntax-error, settings-popout-save, template-cursor) to the new helper for setup and cleanup
  • Adds a policy test in e2e-vault-config.test.ts that scans E2E TypeScript files and fails on any direct vault configuration mutation or save call
  • Risk: setVaultConfig does not persist to disk, so tests that relied on configuration surviving across reloads must use in-memory values only

Macroscope summarized 52afaf8.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests
    • Updated end-to-end test setup to handle vault preferences consistently across scenarios, including restoring prior settings after tests run.
    • Added checks to flag test configurations that bypass the supported preference-setting approach.
    • Existing test scenarios and application behavior are unchanged; this update does not add user-facing features.

setConfig and saveConfig write .obsidian/app.json. Under load Obsidian
reads its own late write back after a spec restores the option, so the
option stays changed for every later spec (#2207). This check fails while
any spec under tests/e2e still calls them.

Refs #2207
settings-popout-save turned on settingsPopoutWindow with setConfig and
restored it afterwards. setConfig also writes app.json a second later, and
under load Obsidian picked that write up after the restore and turned the
option back on. Every later spec then opened Settings in a popout and found
no choice list in the main window, which failed empty-format-default,
external-settings-change and global-var-autocomplete in full runs.

setVaultConfig sets the option on app.vault.config without writing
app.json. All native specs now use it, and daily-note-token no longer
needs its saveConfig workaround.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

E2E tests use setVaultConfig to change vault settings in memory instead of writing them through the vault configuration API. A Vitest check scans E2E TypeScript files for specified configuration-writing calls.

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 52afa

This change only affects E2E tests. The new guard can miss a prohibited vault-config write when the call is formatted across lines. Merging is low risk, and the guard can be tightened in a follow-up.

I’m a rabbit with a config to set,
In memory, not saved just yet.
I hop through each test,
Restore every setting to its nest,
And catch stray writes before they’re met.

Verified head 52afaf8 against base eaa72c8, patch-id e4c271110991cbae8097fa4ba77a6a7121f14506 (matches). Native Obsidian 1.14.3, isolated worktree vault, 6 to 12 extra CPU spinners on a 16-core Mac.

  • Guard: tests/e2e-vault-config.test.ts passes at head. With master's tests/e2e it fails and lists 23 setConfig call sites across 12 spec files.
  • Base mechanism: setConfig(true), wait for disk true, then setConfig(false). 2 of 8 runs ended true in memory and on disk at load 14.6 to 15.2 (run 5 never saw the true write within 10 s, so 2 of 7 valid flips). Obsidian read its own late write back after the restore, as the PR describes.
  • Head mechanism: toggling app.vault.config.settingsPopoutWindow left app.json mtime and size unchanged in 3 of 3 runs. Settings opened in a popout while true and in the main window after false.
  • Six-spec set at head, 3 runs at load 15 to 30: 57/58, 57/58, 58/58. app.json mtime never changed. empty-format-default, external-settings-change, global-var-autocomplete and settings-popout-save (both window states) passed in all 3 runs. The same set with master's specs passed 58/58 once and rewrote app.json.
  • Note: the two head failures were load flakes, not regressions. daily-note-token "captures into the note Daily notes opens" failed once and then passed 2/2 at head and 2/2 at base in isolation. template-cursor "restores Live Preview typing ... rename=false" failed once and then passed in 3 isolated head runs. Isolated template-cursor runs had 1 failure in 3 at head and 4 failures in 3 at base, all in tests this PR does not touch.
