Summary

pnpm run check and pnpm run build-with-lint are fast again, and they fail closed. #2224 made check fast with svelte-check --tsgo, but svelte-check 4.7.6 exits 0 when the native compiler is missing, crashes, or is killed. #2225 closed that hole by moving check back to the TypeScript 6 checker, which made it about 3.5x slower on CI.

This PR runs check on TypeScript 7's native API (svelte-check --tsgo-experimental-api). A pnpm patch backports the upstream exit-status fix, sveltejs/language-tools#3133, which is merged but not released. lint now runs its checks in parallel.

Measured on one GitHub runner, 8 rotating rounds per side (bench run 38288422505, commit 3e14dd0; later commits change only tests and docs):

master this PR change
pnpm run check 13.86 s 5.49 s -60%
pnpm run build-with-lint 21.32 s 9.07 s -57%

On the same runner class, #2224's scripts measured 4.09 s for check and 11.59 s for build-with-lint (bench run 38279836247). So build-with-lint beats #2224, and check alone is about 1.4 s slower than #2224. "Why this path" explains that gap.

Changes

  • check is svelte-check --tsgo-experimental-api --fail-on-warnings. It type-checks every .ts and .svelte file in the tsconfig program with the native compiler, and it reports the Svelte compiler's warnings.

  • patches/svelte-check@4.7.6.patch is upstream commit af7c6a5 (#3133), unchanged in compiled form. The CLI's top-level catch now exits 1, and a compiler process that dies or exits non-zero without diagnostics rejects the run. Before the patch, the API path exited 0 when the native compiler could not start.

  • lint is pnpm run "/^(lint:.+|check)$/". pnpm 10.32.1 runs the matched scripts concurrently. On the first failure it stops the others and exits with that script's code. --no-bail exits 0 when a script fails, so AGENTS.md warns against it.

  • build-with-lint is pnpm lint && node esbuild.config.mjs production. It no longer runs a separate full tsc -noEmit, because check type-checks the same program.

  • New lint:tsconfig (tsc --noEmit --noCheck) fails with TS18003 when the tsconfig matches no input files. svelte-check's API path reports that case as a clean run. It costs 0.28 s of build-with-lint. A full parallel tsc cost 2.1 s.

  • svelte-check is pinned to exactly 4.7.6, and Dependabot skips it. Once the patched version is no longer installed, pnpm refuses to install (ERR_PNPM_UNUSED_PATCH, checked on 10.32.1), which would block the whole dev-dependency group. The next svelte-check upgrade must delete the patch by hand.

  • tests/tooling/svelteCheck.test.ts runs the check command in temporary workspaces. It requires exit 1 for:

    • compiler warnings on their own,
    • an event-handler type error and legacy reactivity,
    • a component that does not parse,
    • a .ts import of a deleted component,
    • a native compiler whose platform package cannot be resolved,
    • a native compiler that starts and is then SIGKILLed (POSIX only).

A further case requires lint to select lint:tsconfig, and that script to fail on an empty include. Each case fails under a configuration that lets its defect through:

    Case Fails when
missing native compiler svelte-check is unpatched
crashed native compiler --tsgo is unpatched
deleted component --tsgo runs with every local fix
    compiler warnings --fail-on-warnings is removed
    empty include lint drops lint:tsconfig

Why this path

I compared six setups. Each ran a failure-mode matrix of 21 scenarios through the real pnpm run check and pnpm run build-with-lint. A cell is open when the gate exits 0 although it should fail.

Setup Open cells check build-with-lint Local code
master (TS6, #2225) 3 of 40. Warnings, and parse errors under check, in components nothing imports 9.74 s 14.33 s none
#2224 (--tsgo) with a tsc --version preflight 12 of 40. A native crash or kill mid-run (with or without a type error), components that do not parse, deleted or renamed components 4.09 s* 11.59 s* none
--tsgo, parallel lint, 4 local fixes 4 of 40. A .ts import of a deleted or renamed component 2.92 s 5.26 s 2 fixes not upstream
svelte-check-native 1.9.1 (Rust) 6 of 42. An imported component that does not parse, deleted or renamed components not measured not measured none, but a single-maintainer binary
This PR 1 of 44. check run alone on an empty include, which lint catches 3.66 s 5.62 s the #3133 backport

Times come from one runner, 6 rounds each (bench run 38282284345). Rows marked * come from bench run 38279836247, on a slower runner. svelte-check-native's timed runs were replay-cache hits, so they are left out. "This PR" in that run predates lint:tsconfig.

--tsgo cannot report a missing component, because svelte's own types declare module '*.svelte'. The language server blanks that declaration, so TS6 and the API path report TS2307. Native tsc reading --tsgo's overlays cannot.

The API path costs about 0.7 s more than --tsgo for check. svelte-check gives the native server a file-system proxy, so every file lookup during module resolution becomes a synchronous call back into Node. A CPU profile shows 2.5 s of 4 s on the main thread blocked in that channel. Fixing that is an upstream change.

Testing / validation

  • Fresh worktree: pnpm install --frozen-lockfile, then pnpm run build-with-lint exits 0. pnpm run test: 501 files, 7,021 tests passed, 28 skipped.

  • main.js and styles.css are byte-identical to master:

    • main.js: d83aa6eeaa77bbcfe0e3574f3ab1e67c57469506074c43f5e67087bf64ae6127
    • styles.css: 9467ef3622cd1137ce5a0148e16de23b9f5be87bc8c204fb6050c48f8f29994d
  • The failure-mode matrix on 3e14dd0, through the real scripts. Every cell that must fail exits non-zero except check run alone on an empty include. That covers a missing, unresolvable, crashing (exit 2), or SIGKILLed native compiler, with and without a type error. A missing compiler also fails on a clean tree. A component nothing imports is now checked for warnings, parse errors, and type errors, which master did not do.

  • CI's "Run build with lint" step: 39 s before build(deps): adopt native tooling and replace ESLint #2224, 12 s on build(deps): adopt native tooling and replace ESLint #2224, 20 s on build: run svelte-check on TypeScript 6 and guard svelte/internal in .ts files #2225, and 7 to 11 s on this branch (median 8.5 s over 4 runs). The whole Build + Lint job took 54 s on build: run svelte-check on TypeScript 6 and guard svelte/internal in .ts files #2225 and 32 to 50 s here.

  • Two adversarial review rounds (Claude Fable 5.1, GPT-6 Astra) found:

    • the empty-tsconfig hole,
    • a warnings test that passed without --fail-on-warnings,
    • a Dependabot block,
    • a crash test that could pass for the wrong reason,
    • the CPU cost of a full parallel tsc.

    All five are fixed here.

  • Platform Test (macOS, Windows) runs only on master pushes or workflow_dispatch, so I dispatched it on this branch. Both pass on a07221b (run 38291748711); the head after that only pins svelte-check's version. The first dispatch failed on macOS only because the test compared full file paths, so the test now compares base names.

  • One cosmetic macOS difference. On a case-insensitive file system the API path prints Svelte compiler warnings under a lowercased path, such as ../../../../../users/runner/work/quickadd/quickadd/src/gui/choicebuilder/components/labeledfield.svelte. TypeScript errors keep the real path, the path still opens on macOS, and exit codes and counts are unchanged. Probe run: 38291272335. It is upstream behavior, so this PR carries no local fix. I drafted an upstream issue but have not filed it.

Release impact: none. The bundle is unchanged, and build: requests no release.

Checklist

Note

Run svelte-check on the native TypeScript API and lint in parallel

  • pnpm run lint now uses a pnpm regular expression to run all lint:* scripts plus check in parallel, including the new lint:tsconfig script that catches empty tsconfig input programs
  • pnpm run check runs svelte-check through its experimental TypeScript API path, with svelte-check pinned to 4.7.6 and patched so compiler failures reject with the compiler's output; the patch also makes caught top-level failures exit with status 1
  • pnpm run build-with-lint now waits for pnpm lint instead of running a standalone TypeScript command before bundling
  • Tests in svelteCheck.test.ts assert exit statuses and structured diagnostic codes, and cover missing native compiler packages and signal-terminated compilers
  • Risk: Dependabot now skips svelte-check updates (dependabot.yml); the pinned patch in svelte-check@4.7.6.patch must be reworked when upgrading

Macroscope summarized 0634225.

`pnpm run check` now runs `svelte-check --tsgo-experimental-api`, which
type-checks every .ts and .svelte file through TypeScript 7's native API.
A pnpm patch backports sveltejs/language-tools#3133 (merged, unreleased),
so a native compiler that cannot start, crashes, or is killed fails the
check instead of exiting 0. Dependabot skips svelte-check, because pnpm
refuses to install with the patch once the version moves; the 4.7.7
upgrade deletes the patch by hand.

`pnpm lint` runs lint:native, lint:svelte, lint:tsconfig, and check
concurrently with pnpm's default bail, which exits with the first
failure's code. build-with-lint no longer runs a separate full
`tsc -noEmit`, because check type-checks the same program. lint:tsconfig
(`tsc --noEmit --noCheck`) fails when the tsconfig matches no input
files, which svelte-check's API path reports as a clean run.

The svelte-check test now covers warnings on their own, components that
do not parse, imports of deleted components, and a native compiler that
dies after it starts.

Ship verification: PASS+NOTES

Independently verified in fresh detached head and parent worktrees, using the real pnpm scripts. No implementation changes.

Head SHA: 0634225
Base SHA: d57eb15
Patch-id: a4c8644e567c4e9fca0cd7d61a5431827d5ba723

  1. Clean build and artifact parity: PASS. pnpm install --frozen-lockfile exited 0 in both worktrees. Head pnpm run build-with-lint and parent pnpm run build both exited 0. main.js and styles.css are byte-identical, including after the final clean rebuild. SHA256 values:
    main.js: d83aa6eeaa77bbcfe0e3574f3ab1e67c57469506074c43f5e67087bf64ae6127
    styles.css: 9467ef3622cd1137ce5a0148e16de23b9f5be87bc8c204fb6050c48f8f29994d

  2. Full test suite: PASS. pnpm run test exited 0. 501 files and 7,021 tests passed; 6 files and 28 tests skipped. Local environment: Linux x64, Node v22.23.2, pnpm 10.32.1.

  3. Failure checks: PASS. Each case ran through pnpm run check and pnpm run build-with-lint, in that order. Each mutation was restored before the next case.

  • Native tsc renamed away: exits 1 and 1, with executable-not-found diagnostics.
  • Native tsc replaced with a script that passes --version to the original and otherwise exits 2: exits 1 and 2. The fake logged an actual --api invocation; check reported EPIPE. The original executable was renamed aside before replacement and restored by rename, with its inode and SHA256 unchanged.
  • Type error in a component imported by a .ts file under src/: exits 1 and 1, reporting string assigned to number. The valid component control passed first.
  • A .ts import of a deleted component: exits 1 and 1, reporting Cannot find module './ShipDeleted.svelte'. The component-present control passed first.
  • Accessibility warning in a component nothing imports: exits 1 and 1, reporting a11y_missing_attribute with 0 errors and 1 warning.
  • tsconfig include set to ["missing/**/*.ts"]: check exits 0 as documented; lint and build-with-lint both exit 2 with TS18003.
  1. Parallel lint failure propagation: PASS. A temporary console.log in a scratch src .ts file passes check, but pnpm run lint exits 1 with eslint(no-console) from lint:native. The log shows all four scripts started. After restoration, clean check, lint, and build-with-lint all exit 0. Both worktrees have clean git status.

  2. CI: PASS at the exact head SHA. The PR checks are green, with the conditional PR platform job and Macroscope check skipped. workflow_dispatch run 38292530026 has both Platform Test (macos-latest) and Platform Test (windows-latest) passing at 0634225: https://github.com/chhoumann/quickadd/actions/runs/38292530026

  3. Upstream patch comparison: PASS. gh api repos/sveltejs/language-tools/commits/af7c6a505 resolves to af7c6a505a8aa631f5ca7794f41163e46cb0bc33. Both changed runtime blocks in patches/svelte-check@4.7.6.patch match the upstream compiler-process failure handling and top-level exitAfterFlush(1) after TypeScript output normalization. The installed package contains both blocks. Upstream tests and changeset are outside the compiled-package patch.

Note: check alone still accepts an empty tsconfig input set. This is the documented limitation requested for verification; lint and build-with-lint correctly reject it. No additional shipping blockers found. All injected changes are restored; the two verification worktrees will be removed after posting this comment.
