fix: install clang resource headers with downloaded clang-tidy - #530
clang-tidy looks for clang's builtin headers (like stddef.h) in <bin_dir>/../lib/clang/<version>/include. When cpp-linter downloads clang-tidy (--version 21, PyPI wheel or static binary), only the executable is installed. So every source that includes a standard header gets 'stddef.h' file not found. That error is reported in a system header (eg. /usr/include/stdio.h), which cpp-linter skips, so users see no error, only fewer diagnostics.
Reproduced on main (eb6d908) with a small CMake project on Linux, where --version 21 installs clang-tidy 21.1.6 from PyPI:
$ ~/.cache/cpp-linter/bin/clang-tidy-21 -p build src/main.cpp/usr/include/stdio.h:34:10: error: 'stddef.h' file not found [clang-diagnostic-error]
On the same files, modernize-loop-convert and a clang-diagnostic-error in the analyzed file were missing from the results.
Both sources already ship the headers:
PyPI clang-tidy wheels (v16+) have clang_tidy/data/lib/clang/<major>/include. Wheels of v15 and older don't, so a warning is logged for them.
Each static binaries release has clang-resource-headers-<major>.tar.gz (listed in SHA512SUMS).
Changes
New downloader::resource_headers module (with a dedicated ResourceHeadersError): extracts lib/clang/** from a wheel or from the static .tar.gz into <bin_dir>/../lib/clang, rejecting paths that would escape that folder.
PyPiDownloader and StaticDistDownloader install the headers for clang-tidy (ClangTool::needs_resource_headers()). The static archive is verified with the release's SHA512SUMS.
RequestedVersion::eval_tool() only reuses a cached clang-tidy that has its headers, so existing caches get them on the next run.
The cached binary was looked up as <tool>-<major>.0.0, but downloads are named <tool>-<major>, so the cache was never used (PyPI info was fetched again on every run after 10 minutes). Fixed while touching that check.
New dependencies: flate2 (already in the tree via zip, using the same zlib-rs backend) and tar (without default features).
Testing
Unit tests for the new module, the PyPI/static downloaders and the cache check.
Manually, with an empty cache:
-V 21 (PyPI): headers extracted to ~/.cache/cpp-linter/lib/clang/21; the next run says "Found clang-tidy version 21.1.6 in cache".
-V 20 with PyPI unavailable (static binary): clang-resource-headers-20.tar.gz downloaded, verified and extracted.
clang-tools clang-tidy -v 19 -d <dir>/bin puts the headers in <dir>/lib/clang.
No stddef.h errors from the installed clang-tidy afterwards.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
clang-tidy downloads can now install the Clang resource headers they need. Static-distribution archives are checksum-verified before extraction.
Downloads can still complete when the header payload is unavailable.
Cached clang-tidy binaries are used only when the required headers are available; compatible cached binaries can be found across supported versions.
Documentation
Clarified that resource headers are installed in <DIRECTORY>/../lib/clang.
pre-commit / run-pre-commit and pre-commit / Check PR title fail for a reason outside this PR: the shared workflow (cpp-linter/.github pre-commit.yml) uses actions/setup-node with node-version: latest, which now installs v27.0.0-alpha.0.0.0, and cspell-cli refuses to run on it ("Unsupported NodeJS version ... >=22.18.0 is required"). All other hooks pass. A fix (node-version: lts/*) for cpp-linter/.github is ready; these checks will be re-run once it lands.
Build FreeBSD also fails outside this PR: after the VM upgrades pkg 2.7.5 → 2.8.4, sudo pkg install -y -f curl node libnghttp2 npm cmake stops with "No packages available to install matching 'cmake'" (same on #531; the job passed on main yesterday). A likely fix is installing cmake-core (the port that provides the cmake binary) in node-js-packaging.yml; not part of this PR.
The change adds resource-header detection and extraction for clang-tidy downloads from PyPI wheels and static release archives. Cached binary selection uses major-version filenames and requires matching headers for clang-tidy binaries.

Adds helpers to locate Clang resource headers, check for include/stddef.h, and extract matching files from wheels and tar.gz archives. Unsafe paths and archives without matching files return errors. Staged extraction replaces matching version directories. Tests cover detection, extraction, missing headers, unsafe paths, cleanup, and replacement.

PyPI downloads extract headers when the tool requires them and warn when the wheel has no header payload. Static downloads verify and extract the resource-header archive. The directory option documents the header location. Tests cover both download paths.
Cache lookup uses the minimum supported major version in the binary filename. Cached clang-tidy binaries are used only when matching headers are present.
cpp-linter/cpp-linter-rs#533: Updates the FreeBSD workflow to install cmake-core, addressing the same reported FreeBSD package lookup failure.

Match the executable’s exact resource-directory name.
The check is too broad for LLVM 15 and older. Those executables use a full resource version such as lib/clang/15.0.7, but has_resource_headers accepts any 15.* directory.
The PyPI and static downloaders use the same cache root and major-named binary path. A download can replace the cached binary while leaving an older full-version header directory in place. The cache checks then accept the headers and skip installation, although the executable looks in its exact resource-version directory.
Pass the executable’s canonical resource-directory name to the check. Compare it exactly for legacy releases, while retaining the major-only name for LLVM 16 and newer.

Remove a checksum-invalid resource archive from the cache.
If the archive fails SHA512 verification, it remains at the cache path. Later calls skip the download because the archive exists, then fail the same verification. This can block static clang-tidy installation until the archive is removed manually. Delete the archive when the failure is DownloadError::HashMismatch.

clang-tidy looks for clang's builtin headers (like `stddef.h`) in
`<bin_dir>/../lib/clang/<version>/include`. Only the executable was
installed from a PyPI wheel or a static binary release, so any source
that includes a standard header failed to compile. Those errors are in
system headers, so cpp-linter dropped them and quietly reported fewer
diagnostics.
- Extract `<package>/data/lib/clang/**` from clang-tidy wheels
(wheels of v15 and older have no headers; a warning is logged).
- Download, verify (SHA512SUMS) and extract
`clang-resource-headers-<major>.tar.gz` for static binaries.
- A cached clang-tidy without headers is downloaded again.
- The cached binary lookup used `<tool>-<major>.0.0`, but downloads are
named `<tool>-<major>`, so the cache was never used.
Log messages now name the path inline, so their arguments sit on
lines that run even when info logging is off. The parent folder of
an extracted header always exists, so drop the never-taken branch.
Extract the headers into a staging folder (lib/clang.partial) first,
then move each version folder into lib/clang. Before, an extraction that
failed midway could leave stddef.h behind, and a later run would accept
the incomplete folder as installed.
LLVM 15 and older look for their headers in lib/clang/<full version>,
so a 15.0.6 headers folder does not serve a 15.0.7 binary. Check the
exact folder name of the binary's version (cached binaries are now
checked after reading their version).
Also delete a cached headers archive that fails its checksum, so the
next run downloads it again instead of failing the same way.
