Motivation

As alluded in prior pull requests, Bazel advances one of Base SDK's key objectives, providing FFIs for low level primitives. base-sdk#93 addressed part of this objective by bringing support for the portable flag so that FFIs could decide whether to benefit from more recent ISA extensions or maintain a broad support pool but being able to exercise build combinations were limited to the host and target platforms overlapping.

This pull request introduces deterministic cross-compilation support for both portable and standard build configurations using defined sysroot sources for consistency and patches to work around teething pains.

Additional Information

How Has This Been Tested?

Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Release builds now target Linux, macOS, and Windows across supported x86_64 and ARM64 platforms, including cross-compilation from supported hosts.
    • Windows is included in platform validation and probe builds.
    • Build workflows cover debug and optimized builds for portable and non-portable profiles, plus optimized builds for additional target platforms.
  • Documentation
    • Build setup instructions clarify how required build tools are obtained and configured.

Bazel now defines Linux, macOS, and Windows targets and creates Rust toolchains for cross-compilation. The LLVM configuration adds Darwin and Windows target support, including compiler runtime and sysroot setup. CI and smoke tests build non-host targets and check probe binaries. The change also updates Buildifier installation and linting, repository-root discovery for symlink checks, and the configured Rust nightly.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title is a long, multi-clause summary (17 words, 145 characters) that names the main thrust of the changeset: a nightly toolchain bump, patches to toolchains_llvm and rules_cc, and cross-compilation from a given host against all known targets. The summary and the changes to rust-toolchain.toml, bazel/toolchains.bzl, bazel/workspace.bzl, the patches, and the CI workflow all match these claims. It is not vague, but it is overly long and uses a dense, multi-part form that a reader scanning history may find hard to parse. The title is related to the main change, so it passes.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description states the motivation (deterministic cross-compilation for portable and standard builds using sysroot sources and patches), lists dependencies and the nightly bump, explains the toolchains_llvm, cc-rs/llvm-ar, and MinGW patches, and gives test commands. These points match the changeset files, including the rust-toolchain.toml channel change, the toolchains_llvm and rules_cc patches, the crate_universe llvm-ar annotations, and the lint_bazel.py cross-target graph checks. The description is specific and on topic.

Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2

Verified the supplied findings against the exact head and confirmed two non-blocking validation gaps; no blocking defect was established. Current build, test, and lint checks are successful, including the three Bazel host jobs and their cross-build steps. Verification was static only; no local builds or tests were run.

In `MODULE.bazel`:
- [SUGGESTION] MODULE.bazel:33-36: Validate graph compatibility behind the Windows MSVC selector
Using the MSVC selector is justified by rules_rust 0.73.0, which deliberately omits windows-gnu because its platform constraints overlap MSVC. However, crate_universe resolves MSVC dependency conditions while the actual toolchain targets windows-gnu, and the documented compatibility assumption has no automated guard. The existing graph checker supplies neither a Cargo --target nor a Bazel --platforms argument and skips Windows hosts, so it cannot detect Windows-environment-specific divergence. Add a target-aware graph comparison against Cargo's x86_64-pc-windows-gnu resolution, distinguishing host/build dependencies from target dependencies. This is a safeguard for the new workaround, not evidence that the currently exercised SDK graph fails.

In `.github/workflows/build_bazel.yml`:
- [SUGGESTION] .github/workflows/build_bazel.yml:102-110: Exercise the portable profile for cross targets
This loop cross-builds only the non-portable release profile. The portable builds above it use the native platform, and contrib/smoke_test.py cross-builds with the default non-portable debug profile. Consequently, neither path exercises portable cross-toolchain selection or the new Windows baseline CPU entry; Windows has no native Bazel host job to cover that entry either. Add a portable cross-build invocation, such as the same command with --//bazel:portable, to validate the baseline flags and portable native-library build-script behavior for these targets.

Still applies (re-reviewed at e7682de8): Partly: you now select each Cargo target and Bazel platform explicitly, including Windows GNU. The checker still discards compilation context before comparing packages and features, so an execution-only copy can mask a missing target copy; that separation remains necessary to complete the requested safeguard.

Still applies (re-reviewed at 6a2cddc7): Not completely: your per-triple queries address platform selection, but the floor/ceiling comparison still uses one Bazel feature union per package rather than corresponding execution and target instances. The generated blst MSVC-conditioned glob edge is a build-script dependency, not proof of a GNU library mismatch; distinguishing those roles remains the unfinished part of the safeguard.

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2

At e7682de, static verification confirms that Linux-to-Darwin static-library actions select an archiver missing from the configured toolchain. Portable cross-profile coverage is fixed, but the graph safeguard still merges execution and target dependencies. All applicable checks in the supplied snapshot and current GitHub checks pass; no local builds or tests were run.

🟡 Suggestion: Validate graph compatibility behind the Windows MSVC selector
maint/lint/lint_bazel.py:409-411

The new Cargo --target and Bazel --platforms arguments address target selection, but the requested separation of execution and target dependencies remains missing. _bazel_crates queries deps(//...), including execution-configuration dependencies, then discards configuration identity and unions features by package name/version here. _cargo_crates likewise retains feature alternatives without their compilation context. Consequently, if a package exists as a build dependency on both sides but its required Windows GNU target copy is omitted from Bazel, the package-presence check still passes; its execution-copy features can also satisfy the target-copy feature floor. The reverse can hide an extra target dependency. Preserve compilation context when comparing package presence and features so the MSVC-selector workaround is checked independently of build-script and proc-macro dependencies. This is an incomplete safeguard, not evidence that the current SDK dependency graph is incorrect.

In `bazel/patches/toolchains_llvm-darwin-target.patch`:
- [BLOCKING] bazel/patches/toolchains_llvm-darwin-target.patch:23-26: Provide the Darwin archiver on Linux execution hosts
Making this branch target-only also enables its unchanged `use_libtool = True` assignment when Linux targets macOS. In pinned toolchains_llvm 1.8.0, `cc_toolchain_config.bzl:635–636` consequently selects `bin/libtool`, but `internal/common.bzl:61–68,271–275` adds the `llvm-libtool-darwin -> libtool` symlink only for Darwin execution hosts. `internal/configure.bzl:234–238` creates those links using the execution OS, and none of this PR's patches supplies the missing Linux-host link. A nonempty `cc_library` built for either macOS platform therefore cannot start its static-archive action. Passing CI does not cover this route: both C/C++ probes are `cc_binary` targets, while blst and secp256k1-sys explicitly use the separate llvm-ar annotation. Provide a runnable Darwin archiver on Linux, or select llvm-ar with compatible archive flags, and add a static-library probe.

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2

Static verification of the complete diff at 6a2cddc found no blocking defect and two non-blocking validation improvements. The Darwin archiver and portable cross-build findings are fixed; the remaining graph-context concern is consolidated into one finding. Current GitHub checks report successful Bazel host builds, cross-builds, MSRV/stable checks, and lint; no local builds or tests were run.

In `contrib/smoke_test.py`:
- [SUGGESTION] contrib/smoke_test.py:405-411: Exercise a final Rust link through the new Bazel cross toolchains
The new cross-build artifact checks cover only the C and C++ probes. The SDK's Bazel targets produce Rust libraries, and its proc macro and build-script executables link for the execution platform, so building `//...` does not exercise a final Rust executable link for the selected foreign target. The direct-rustc probes elsewhere in this script use devshell linker drivers rather than Bazel's Rust/C toolchain integration. Add a Bazel `rust_binary` probe and include its output in these format/architecture checks; calling an SDK operation backed by a native crypto archive would also exercise native archive integration. This closes a validation gap in the newly added cross toolchains without requiring execution of foreign binaries.

In `MODULE.bazel`:
- [SUGGESTION] MODULE.bazel:33-36: Validate graph compatibility behind the Windows MSVC selector
  (existing thread: https://github.com/dashpay/base-sdk/pull/116#discussion_r4465698048)
The Windows GNU Cargo target and corresponding Bazel platform are now selected explicitly, but the graph comparison still cannot fully establish the compatibility claimed by this comment. `_bazel_crates` unions features from every configured instance into one package entry at lint_bazel.py:397–411, while `_cargo_crates` retains distinct feature sets without identifying their execution/target roles. The floor/ceiling checks at lines 572–594 therefore allow an execution-only instance to satisfy package presence and allow features from one configuration to cover another configuration's requirements. The generated blst rule's MSVC-conditioned glob dependency belongs to its build script, so that edge alone is not evidence of a GNU target-library mismatch; it illustrates why the roles must remain distinguishable. Preserve compilation context in both graph readers and compare role-aligned instances, accounting for build dependencies and proc macros. This is a non-blocking limitation of the workaround's validation, not a demonstrated failure of the current SDK graph.
