primitives%feat: add payload sign hashes, read signatures of any length - #121
A special transaction's signature is checked against a digest built from the payload, and for some payloads from the transaction that carries it. The crate can only produce that digest for the registration's collateral signature and for the service, registrar and revocation updates, through Signable. It has none for the shared masternode payloads, the quorum commitment, the hard-fork signal or the asset unlock. A wallet or node that signs or checks those has to rebuild the digest itself, and nothing shows that the existing digests match the reference implementation's signatures.
The crate also refused owner and collateral signatures of any length other than 0 or 65 bytes. The wire format holds both as byte vectors of any length, so a transaction carrying another length failed to decode here.
This pull request fixes that decode, adds the missing digests, and checks every digest against signatures the reference implementation made.
Additional Information
Description
Notes
Tell a high S from its low-S twin
A dash-pkc test reads a recoverable signature from its 65 bytes and checks is_low_s at half the curve order and one above it, and on a signature the library made and its negated twin. Verification and recovery accept both, so a caller that refuses malleable signatures asks is_low_s.
Read owner and collateral signatures of any length
CollateralSig and OwnerSig keep the bytes as read. as_bytes still returns the 65-byte compact signature, or None for any other length, and as_slice returns the bytes. JSON reads and writes any length too. Signing and verification are unchanged.
Verify the reference implementation's signatures over sign hashes
corpus/sighash.json5 holds 237 special transactions the reference implementation (tag v24.0.0-rc.3) signed, with the keys their signers held at the block before: 126 from the regtest chains its functional tests build and 111 sampled from mainnet blocks 1088144 to 2091281. tests/payload_sighash.rs decodes each transaction and checks that its signature verifies over the payload's digest under the recorded key. This commit covers the digests that already exist.
Add the sign hashes of the shared masternode payloads
Each ProTx's consent signature type implements Signable: JoinSig (a share owner's consent to a shared registration) with the context (Transaction, ProRegTx), DissolveSig (dissolution) with (Transaction, ProDisTx), and SharedRegistrarSig with ProUpSharedRegTx. The first two digests commit to the transaction's inputs and outputs, and the dissolution digest to the payload's signature count, which selects the mode. ProUpShareTx implements Signable, like ProUpRegTx. All four accept only a canonical signature: a header from 27 to 34 and a low S.
Add the sign hashes of the quorum-signed payloads
Commitment::sig_hash, signed by the quorum and its members. MnHardFork and AssetUnlock gain request_id, msg_hash (the transaction with the payload's signature zeroed) and sig_hash, and llmq_sig_hash combines them for a quorum type. The quorum type is a chain parameter (ConsensusParams::llmq_type_mnhf and llmq_type_platform), so the caller passes it. The message hashes encode a copy of the transaction that carries the unsigned payload. These stay methods rather than Signable impls, since the signing key is not in the payload and a commitment holds two signatures.
Update the changelog
The test covers types 1 to 4 at versions 1 to 3, quorum commitments at versions 1 to 4, the hard-fork signal, asset unlocks at versions 1 and 2, and types 10 to 12. Types 5 and 8 carry no payload signature.
BLS keys and signatures are each read in the encoding they were written in: a signature in the one its payload version selects, an operator key in the one its masternode's version selects. The test checks each BLS signature under the scheme of its encoding, except an operator signature in a legacy payload, which it accepts under either scheme: the corpus does not record which one made it.
Commitment::sig_hash writes the quorum public key as the payload holds it.
A consent's context is owned, so a signer passes the transaction and the payload together, for example JoinSig::default().payload(&(tx, ptx)); the digest depends on the context alone. A dissolution's payload in the context already carries as many signatures as the transaction will, with placeholders for those not yet made, since the count selects the mode.
sighash.py writes the corpus from per-chain node dumps, whose layout its docstring describes. The dumps are not in the repository; the corpus holds everything the test reads.
Breaking Changes
None. CollateralSig and OwnerSig decode more inputs than before, and as_bytes keeps its signature. Everything else is new API.
How Has This Been Tested?
tests/payload_sighash.rs passes on all 237 transactions, and each consent signature in them verifies through its type's Signable::verify. Planted faults each make it fail: two fields swapped in the consent digest, the signature count dropped from the dissolution digest, a wrong dissolution prefix, a digest left unhashed, and a canonical check that refuses every low S.
A dash-pkc test tells a high S from its low-S twin; inverting is_low_s makes it fail. A sign.rs test checks that the canonical check refuses the high-S twin of a signature the plain check takes; dropping that refusal makes it fail.
Unit tests check that each consent type stores a signature only under the signer's key and only at 65 bytes, leaves the digest unchanged, and clears it on reset, and that ProUpShareTx refuses an aliased header. Others check that owner and collateral signatures of lengths 0, 1, 64, 65, 66 and 300 decode, encode and round-trip through JSON unchanged, and that a 65-byte or empty one hashes as develop hashed it.
On each commit, cargo clippy --all-targets -- -D warnings and cargo nextest run pass for dash-primitives and dash-pkc, with and without --all-features. On the tip, cargo nextest run --workspace --all-features passes, cargo doc of both crates passes with -D warnings, and the lint suite (Rust, Markdown, Python, Bazel including graph, commit messages, semgrep and cargo-deny) is clean.
A trial merge with develop at a20120b merges cleanly, and clippy and the tests of both crates pass on it.
Only Linux x86_64 was run locally.

Summary
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added signing and verification support for additional masternode consent and update transactions, including canonical signature checks.
Added signing hashes for asset unlocks, masternode hard-fork signals, and quorum commitments.
Added access to the raw bytes of owner and collateral signatures.
Bug Fixes
Owner and collateral signatures of varying lengths are now preserved when decoded. Fixed-size access is available only for signatures of the expected length.
The primitives package adds shared transaction and LLMQ digest helpers, canonical compact-signature verification, and signing support for provider consent signatures and ProUpShareTx. Asset unlocks, MNHF signals, and quorum commitments gain signing-hash APIs. CollateralSig and OwnerSig now retain signature bytes of any length. The changes also add a sighash corpus generator, signature-validation tests, and a package-publication exclusion for the contrib directory.

Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2
Verified the changes at head 6426f93 against the surrounding SDK code and relevant Dash Core serialization and signing contracts; no blocking correctness or security defects were confirmed. One non-blocking allocation optimization remains in the new transaction-hash helper, while the share-attribution concern does not undermine the tests' digest-parity purpose. Current applicable CI checks pass; no local builds or tests were run during this static review.
Triage: critical by gpt-6.1-sol (effort low) — The diff adds intricate cryptographic signing digests across multiple transaction types and canonical ECDSA signature verification in sign.rs::verify_compact_canonical and ProUpShareTx's Signable implementation, directly changing a critical signature surface.
These findings are from an automated code review. Verify each finding against the current code and only fix it if needed.
In `pkgs/primitives/src/sign.rs`:
- [SUGGESTION] pkgs/primitives/src/sign.rs:56-64: Avoid deep-cloning transaction fields solely to hash them
Both new msg_hash methods reach this helper, which clones the input/output vectors and their owned script buffers before instance_hash serializes them into another buffer. Only the replacement extra payload changes, so copying the inputs and outputs adds allocations and memory traffic proportional to their contents without contributing to the digest. Add a crate-private transaction encoding/hash helper that accepts a replacement payload while borrowing the existing fields, and share its serialization logic with Transaction's existing encoder. This preserves the deliberate reuse of transaction serialization without duplicating its consensus-sensitive layout in sign.rs.

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2
Verified the complete diff at 573ff17 and found no blocking correctness or security defects. The previous deep-cloning concern is fixed; one non-blocking suggestion remains to make payload framing explicit in the new transaction encoder's interface. Validation was static-only, and both the supplied head-specific CI snapshot and current checks report successful applicable build, test and lint jobs, with no failures or pending checks.
These findings are from an automated code review. Verify each finding against the current code and only fix it if needed.
In `pkgs/primitives/src/transaction.rs`:
- [SUGGESTION] pkgs/primitives/src/transaction.rs:383-391: Narrow encode_with_payload to raw bytes so the size prefix cannot be lost
This helper documents that it writes payload bytes with their size, but accepting any BaseCodec delegates that framing invariant to the argument. Both current production callers pass Vec<u8>, so their encodings are correct. However, a fixed-size byte array or a payload struct also satisfies the interface and would be written without the required CompactSize prefix. Accept &[u8] and write the prefix here so Transaction continues to own the complete transaction wire format and callers cannot accidentally omit the framing. This is interface hardening, not a current digest defect.

Encode version_bit as one byte in MnHardFork::request_id.
A valid decoded MNHF signal can reach this method. The current i64 conversion encodes eight bytes instead of the required one-byte version_bit field. This makes every MNHF request_id and its downstream sig_hash differ from the reference signing digest.

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2
Static verification of the complete diff at ac06029 found no actionable in-scope defects; the signing preimages match the inspected Dash Core reference paths, and signature decoding remains bounded. The payload-framing suggestion is fixed, while the transaction deep-cloning suggestion is withdrawn because its premise was incorrect. No builds or tests were run locally; current-head build, test, lint, and documentation CI checks remain pending, with no failed checks reported.
Triage: critical by gpt-6.1-sol (effort low) — The diff makes intricate, cross-cutting changes to cryptographic signing digests and signature handling, including llmq_sig_hash in pkgs/primitives/src/sign.rs and canonical signature checks in pkgs/primitives/src/provider/proupsharetx.rs.
These findings are from an automated code review. Verify the current code and confirm that no unresolved issues remain.

Out-of-scope follow-up suggestions (1)
These are valid observations, but they are outside this PR's scope and should be handled in separate issues or author/maintainer-requested PRs rather than blocking this review.
Separate operator-signature encoding from the active BLS verification scheme — The unchanged verify_operator in pkgs/primitives/src/provider/sig.rs selects both byte decoding and cryptographic verification from the payload version. Core instead decodes the signature using its payload version, decodes the operator key using masternode state, and verifies using the chain-active scheme (dashpay/dash@0364ed6, src/evo/specialtxman.cpp:1089–1095 and src/bls/bls.cpp:296–312). These choices can differ for legacy payloads after basic-scheme activation, causing SDK verification to disagree with Core. This predates the PR; the new corpus helpers check digest parity without changing the production operator verifiers.
Follow-up: Open a follow-up issue or PR to supply the active verification scheme independently of signature and key encodings, with regression vectors exercising the production ProUpServTx and ProUpRevTx verifiers across activation.
The request id's definition (src/evo/mnhftx.cpp:32-35 at v24.0.0) writes the version bit as an 8-byte signed integer, so i64::from is correct, and one byte would change every MNHF digest. Corpus vector 923c3851 (regtest feature_asset_locks, block 188) pins it: its quorum signature verifies in tests/payload_sighash.rs only over this request id.

- [SUGGESTION] pkgs/primitives/src/sign.rs:64-66: Reuse Transaction::instance_hash for the substituted transaction
This encode-and-hash sequence duplicates `Transaction::instance_hash` in `pkgs/primitives/src/transaction.rs:378-383`. That method already hashes the complete serialization, preserving the requested height and quorum hash that an asset-unlock v2 txid excludes. Call it on the substituted transaction and convert the result to `Hash256` so the full-serialization-versus-txid distinction stays centralized in the transaction API. The current digest is correct; this is a consolidation suggestion.

Motivation
A special transaction's signature is checked against a digest built from the payload, and for some payloads from the transaction that carries it. The crate can only produce that digest for the registration's collateral signature and for the service, registrar and revocation updates, through
Signable.
