Summary

Picks up #648 with a different approach. Today an organization only gets a page once a commit mentions it, and a developer who isn't on /dev/null has no page at all.

With this PR, a signed-in member can open /@anyone on GitHub. The first visit looks the handle up on GitHub in a job, and the page shows a loading state while it waits. The page polls and turns into what the job found:

  • an organization: today's page, now with a Claim banner while nobody has claimed it;
  • a developer who isn't here yet: an unclaimed page, marked "Not on /dev/null yet". Signing in with that GitHub account makes it theirs.

Guests never trigger a lookup, so crawlers can't spend GitHub's budget. They're asked to sign in, on a 404 page with noindex.

This is the first of three stacked PRs. The next ones add waiting followers and Follow, then lookups on mention plus search and autocomplete.

Changes

  • Unclaimed developer: a profiles row of type user with no users row (Profile::isUnclaimed()). It stores only what the page shows: handle, name, avatar and bio. It never stores location or website. Signing in reuses that row through UpdateOrCreateUser, so the user keeps the profile's ID.
  • Routing: when @{user:handle} matches no user, the fallback picks one of three pages:
    • the org page;
    • the unclaimed page (UnclaimedProfileController);
    • the lookup page (ProfileLookupController).
  • Lookup:
    • The lookup page POSTs to profile-lookups on mount, so a GET never writes, and prefetching or crawling never triggers a lookup.
    • The rate limit is 30 lookups an hour per member.
    • LookUpGitHubProfile is unique per handle and tries once.
    • It goes through CreateGitHubProfile and respects the existing rate-limit pause, now shared as GitHubLookupPauseQuery.
  • Lookup state: it lives in the cache only, so there are no new columns:
    • github-profiles:looking-up:{handle} lasts 30 s;
    • github-profiles:not-found:{handle} lasts a day.
    • The page polls every 2 s and gives up after 30 s.
  • Deleted accounts: a new deleted_github_accounts (github_id, created_at) table.
    • Why: a person who deleted their account never comes back as an unclaimed page.
    • Who sees it: nobody.
    • When it's deleted: when they sign in again.
    • The privacy policy and the knowledge base say so.
  • Fixes from auditing every direct read of profiles:
    • The member requests of chat orgs and ListApiSuggestedUsersRequest now require a users row, so an unclaimed handle can't pass validation.
    • UpdateStaleHandles deletes an unclaimed profile whose handle was taken, instead of renaming it to _renamed-….
    • The social card handles unclaimed profiles. CreateOrganizationOpenGraphImage is renamed CreateProfileOpenGraphImage and draws a grey rail with "Not on /dev/null yet".

Decisions

From the /interview:

  • Who can trigger a lookup? Signed-in members only. Guests get a sign-in prompt, served as a 404 with noindex.
  • Who sees an unclaimed developer's page? Anyone with the link. It is noindex and not in sitemaps. Its social card is the developer card with no location.
  • Location? Never shown or stored for unclaimed developers, even when it's public on GitHub.
  • Main button? "I am @handle" for guests. Follow for members comes in the next PR.
  • Org page? Unchanged, except that the Claim button moves into a banner.
  • Remembering missing accounts? For a day, in the cache, and it never blocks sign-up.
  • Deleted accounts? Never recreated, until the person signs in again.
  • Per-member limit? 30 lookups an hour.
  • Polling? Every 2 s, for 30 s at most, then a "Try again" state.
  • Refreshing unclaimed profiles from GitHub? No.
  • Handle taken by someone else on GitHub? The unclaimed profile is deleted.
  • Moderation of unclaimed pages? Nothing for now.
  • API and apps? Unchanged. The API never triggers lookups.
  • Feature flag? None.

Visual evidence

Local preview with seeded data and the null GitHub provider. Profiles were created by hand to stand in for GitHub's answers.

Member, first visit: loading Loading
The page turns into the profile once the job is done After swap
Guest on an unclaimed developer Guest unclaimed
Guest on a handle never looked up (404) Guest prompt
No GitHub account Missing

Dark Loading dark Org banner dark
Mobile Guest unclaimed mobile Org banner mobile Timeout mobile

Device verification

Phone layouts were checked with 390×844 viewport emulation in Playwright Chromium, not on a device. The changes are pages and buttons, with no keyboard input.

Limitations

  • Unclaimed profiles are never refreshed from GitHub, as decided. If a developer renames on GitHub and someone else takes their old handle, /@old keeps showing the first person until someone's lookup or sign-in moves them.
  • An organization behind SSO or an IP allow list makes GitHub answer 403, which the page shows as "GitHub isn't answering".
  • OrgCallControllerTest "starts a new call once everyone in the last one left" failed once in a full parallel run: it compares an unordered pluck. It passes on its own and has nothing to do with this change.
  • The "rate limit paused" and "too many lookups" states are covered by tests but not captured.
  • The privacy policy gained two paragraphs, but its effective date was not changed, following the org members precedent.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Signed-in members can look up GitHub handles and check whether a profile is available, pending, or temporarily delayed. Lookups are limited to 30 per hour.
    • Handles that aren’t GitHub accounts can be retried after one day.
    • Developers who haven’t joined can have public, search-excluded profile pages with GitHub details and a sign-in option to claim the page.
    • Organization pages can be created when a member visits an organization’s address. Unclaimed pages show a prominent Claim option; the first member with confirmed public GitHub membership can claim.
  • Privacy
    • After account deletion, the GitHub account ID is retained until the person signs in again, preventing their profile from reappearing as unclaimed.

Walkthrough

The changes add signed-in GitHub handle lookup and public, non-indexed pages for unclaimed developer profiles. They also update organization routing and claim presentation, profile image rendering, account deletion and sign-in handling, and validation that restricts selected operations to user profiles.

Changes: GitHub Profile Lookup and Unclaimed Pages

Layer / File(s) Summary
Lookup routes, requests, and page
routes/web.php, app/Http/Controllers/ProfileLookupController.php, app/Http/Requests/*ProfileLookupRequest.php, app/Queries/ProfileLookupQuery.php, app/Actions/CreateProfileLookup.php, resources/js/pages/profile/lookup.tsx, tests/Feature/Controllers/ProfileLookupControllerTest.php
Unresolved handles route to lookup handling when no profile exists. Signed-in members can submit valid handles; the page presents lookup status, polls pending work, and reports throttling.
Queued lookup and GitHub profile resolution
app/Jobs/LookUpGitHubProfile.php, app/Actions/CreateGitHubProfile.php, app/Queries/GitHubLookupPauseQuery.php, app/Actions/UpdateMentionedOrganizations.php, app/Actions/UpdateStaleHandles.php, tests/Unit/Jobs/LookUpGitHubProfileTest.php
The job checks the shared GitHub rate-limit pause, then resolves the handle as an organization or developer profile. Missing and deleted account results are cached, and stale handles are reconciled.
Unclaimed profile pages and images
app/Http/Controllers/UnclaimedProfileController.php, app/Http/Requests/ShowUnclaimedProfileRequest.php, app/Services/PageMetadata.php, app/Actions/CreateProfileOpenGraphImage.php, resources/js/pages/profile/unclaimed.tsx, tests/Feature/Controllers/UnclaimedProfileControllerTest.php, tests/Unit/Actions/CreateProfileOpenGraphImageTest.php
Unclaimed profiles render selected GitHub-derived fields, canonicalize mixed-case handles, and receive profile-specific metadata and Open Graph images.
Profile claiming, deletion, and user-only validation
app/Actions/DeleteUser.php, app/Actions/UpdateOrCreateUser.php, database/migrations/2026_11_02_120000_create_deleted_github_accounts_table.php, app/Http/Requests/Create*Org*Request.php, app/Http/Requests/ListApiSuggestedUsersRequest.php, resources/js/pages/organization/show.tsx, resources/js/pages/privacy/show.tsx, tests/Feature/Controllers/*Org*Test.php
Account deletion records the GitHub ID, and sign-in removes its deleted-account record. Organization and suggested-user requests validate handles against the users table. The organization claim presentation and privacy text are updated.
Missing-page polling behavior
resources/js/layouts/app-layout.tsx, resources/js/lib/deleted-resources.ts, tests/Unit/DeletedResources.test.ts
Notification polling calls its missing-page handler for a 404 only when the response does not identify the current page component.

Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 099d1

Member-only submission, request limits, and stable GitHub identity checks constrain the new lookup flow. However, a lookup overlapping account deletion can recreate a public profile that should remain removed.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Deletion suppression is not atomic with lookup persistence. A member can request an absent new GitHub handle before its owner's rename has synchronized locally. If that lookup passes the deleted-ID check, account deletion then commits, and lookup persistence follows, the worker can recreate an unclaimed profile despite the retained deletion record. Public unclaimed-profile authorization does not consult that record, so the recreated handle, name, avatar, and bio can become visible again. Sequential lookups after deletion are blocked; this concern is the overlapping transition introduced by the new developer-lookup writer.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — A signed-in member may submit eligible GitHub handles beyond their own identity, within the per-member request limit. Execution consumes a shared application-level GitHub budget and may create persistent profiles readable by guests. The affected data is therefore not confined to the requesting member.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The supported failure path is a lookup passing the suppression check, deletion committing, and lookup persistence recreating the profile afterward. An unsynchronized rename supplies a reachable missing handle despite existing-handle validation. Public rendering then relies on unclaimed status rather than the deletion record. This is a source-derived concurrency concern, not an executed exploit demonstration.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Lookup does not grant account ownership. Sign-in selects the profile by the authenticated GitHub ID and creates or updates the user with that profile ID. Unique GitHub-ID constraints and profile foreign keys provide additional identity-integrity controls; handle matching alone is not the claim authority.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Lookup jobs use one try, per-handle uniqueness with a 60-second window, and a 30-second pending marker. Handler completion or an exception clears the marker in a finally block. These bound stale pending state, but the inspected evidence does not establish immediate retry behavior after worker termination or queue-lock recovery.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Coordinate lookup finalization, deletion, and claim through a shared stable-GitHub-ID serialization protocol, rechecking suppression before profile persistence under that protocol. Validate the protocol with overlapping rename, lookup, deletion, and sign-in transitions; moving the check into an otherwise independent transaction is not sufficient by itself.

Explanation

The title "feat: give anyone on GitHub a page, looked up when a member first opens it" matches the main change. The PR adds unclaimed pages for GitHub handles that are not yet on /dev/null. Signed-in members open /@handle to trigger a GitHub lookup. The changeset includes the lookup job, the cache-based status query, the controllers, the requests, the unclaimed profile pages, and the deleted-account handling, so the title covers the primary change. The title is a single sentence, is specific, and avoids file lists.

Preserve missing-profile lookup URLs through sign-in.

ProfileLookupController::show intentionally returns 404 for guests. RememberIntendedUrl then rejects that response because it is not successful, so /@handle is not saved. After GitHub sign-in, SessionController falls back to the log or an older intended URL, and the lookup does not start.

Apply the correction in RememberIntendedUrl, not at the unrelated import in routes/web.php. Keep other error responses excluded and keep the 404 response unchanged.

@coderabbitai About the outside-diff comment on preserving the lookup URL through sign-in: fixed in 4c9c492, but differently from the suggestion. ProfileLookupController::show now remembers the URL itself for guests (not on prefetches), and RememberIntendedUrl stays as it was. Exempting every non-successful user.show response would also have remembered the 404s of deleted accounts and of handles GitHub can't have, plus case redirects, so a guest could land on a missing page after signing in. A test checks that those 404s aren't remembered.

@mnapoli Thanks—the controller-scoped fix addresses the lookup URL concern without broadening RememberIntendedUrl.

I checked the code:

  • ProfileLookupController::show saves the full URL only for guests on non-prefetch requests.
  • RememberIntendedUrl still excludes unsuccessful responses.
  • The tests assert that guest lookup pages save the intended URL, while deleted-account and invalid-handle 404s do not.

Your approach is safer than my suggested middleware exception. It preserves the lookup return path without including unrelated 404s or case redirects. I inspected the tests but did not run them.

Do not replace it with a blanket exception for non-successful user.show responses in RememberIntendedUrl: deleted-account 404s, invalid-GitHub-handle 404s, and case redirects must remain excluded from intended-URL storage.

…ted while open as gone

The layout's notification polling reloads the current URL, and the lookup page answers guests with a 404.
That 404 was read as the page being deleted, covering the sign-in prompt, and the polls overwrote where the guest
returns after sign-in. A profile deleted while open now answers its reload with a missing page, rather than
turning into a lookup of its handle.
