Replaces pino with a logger in the Rust addon. Every logger is now passed in explicitly; there is no global logger. A handler's console goes through the same logger and carries the event's fields. Tests capture their logs as JSON instead of printing them.

Visual overview: https://claude.ai/artifact/KSatwqcG1Yr9W9DWG8B7b8

What changes

  • Rust logger (packages/cli/src/logger/):
    • Sinks for stdout, file and memory, in pretty, JSON (file-only) or ECS format.
    • JS encodes each line into a reused 1 MB byte buffer: level, time, message, bound-field JSON and params JSON. The buffer is handed over at 1,024 lines, on setImmediate, or after 20 ms.
    • Each batch is one napi call. A dedicated envio-logger thread parses, merges, formats and writes once per sink per batch.
      • The queue in front of the thread is bounded at 16 batches.
      • On a repeated key, the later value wins and the key keeps its first position.
    • On a pipe, stdout is written in line-aligned chunks of at most PIPE_BUF.
    • Pretty lines print above the TUI.
  • Exit and signals:
    • One process-wide hook (exit, SIGINT, SIGTERM, SIGHUP) flushes every logger within 5 s.
    • When nothing else handles the signal, the hook re-raises it, so the process still dies by that signal.
  • Supervisor:
    • Forwards worker lines through the addon's writeStdoutLine / writeStderrLine.
    • Counts a worker as gone once its output closes, and at most 1 s after it exits.
  • Logger.res replaces Logging.res and bindings/Pino.res:
    • A derived logger (withFields, withChainId) serializes its fields once, when made.
    • A line is checked against the level before anything is serialized.
  • No global logger:
    • The entry points build one logger each and pass it down.
    • Chain components get a logger that carries chainId.
    • FetchState reports typed notices through ~onNotice.
  • console goes through the logger (Logger.routeConsole, no opt-out):
    • log/info → uinfo, debug → udebug, warn → uwarn, error → uerror.
    • A message followed by one plain object or Error logs that value as params.
    • table, dir, count, time, group, … are formatted by a Node Console. They do nothing when the line would be dropped. clear does nothing.
    • ConsoleScope is an AsyncLocalStorage, always on. It gives each line its context:
      • Item: a handler's line carries the event's fields.
      • Logger: contract-register and effect lines carry theirs.
      • Silent: the preload run's lines are dropped.
      • A Silent or Item scope ends with its run. Work it started that logs later goes to the root logger.
  • Tests:
    • IndexerRunner captures every line in memory: indexer.infoAndAboveLogs() / indexer.allLogsAsJson().
    • A failing run writes .test-logs/*.jsonl and ends the failure message with Logs: <path>. CI uploads that folder.

Performance against main

The erc20 template on 840,798 UNI events, with release builds of main (135f016) and this branch on the same 4-core container. Each figure is the median of 3 runs of summed handler time.

Variant Node 24 main Node 24 branch Node 22 main Node 22 branch
no logs 4.50 s 4.10 s 5.51 s 6.33 s
console.log per event 9.05 s 7.66 s 9.47 s 8.90 s
context.log per event 34.16 s 7.38 s 34.92 s 9.07 s
console.log, LOG_LEVEL=warn 8.65 s 4.14 s 9.23 s 6.82 s
  • context.log is 4.6× faster: about 4 µs per line instead of about 35 µs through pino.
  • console.log now carries the event's fields and still costs less than raw stdout did on main.
  • A console.log filtered out by LOG_LEVEL costs nothing. On main, LOG_LEVEL didn't apply to console.
  • Without logs, Node 24 is unchanged to slightly faster. Node 22 is about 15% slower because the always-on AsyncLocalStorage uses promise hooks there; this was accepted so both versions behave the same.

Behaviour compared to pino

Kept as before:

  • LOG_STRATEGY takes the same seven values.
  • LOG_LEVEL, FILE_LOG_LEVEL and LOG_FILE take the same values.
  • The level names and numbers written on each line are unchanged, including u*.
  • The file sinks keep pino's minimum levels.
  • The ECS and JSON line shapes are unchanged.
  • An Error passed as params lands under err.
  • Circular params are written as [Circular].
  • NO_COLOR is respected. Pretty output is coloured on GitHub Actions, GitLab CI and CircleCI.

Changed (release notes):

  • A level threshold ranks each user level as the level it is named after: udebug/uinfo/uwarn/uerror pass wherever debug/info/warn/error do.
    • LOG_LEVEL=warn now shows handler warnings and errors. Before, it hid every user line.
    • LOG_LEVEL=uerror now means the same as error.
    • LOG_LEVEL=uinfo now also shows the indexer's own info lines.
  • console output is now a log line.
    • It follows LOG_STRATEGY and the level.
    • It goes to the file under file-only.
    • Inside handlers it carries the event's fields.
  • Logging inside an effect (context.log or console) carries effect as well as the event's fields.
  • chainId comes first on chain lines. The fields registeredFromBlock and requestedFromBlock were renamed.
  • ecs-console-multistream prints raw ECS JSON.
  • A BigInt param is written as a string.
  • A param named like a key the format writes itself gives way to the line's own value. pino wrote the key twice.
  • A storage error during a grouped load is logged with the chain's fields. The handler failure that follows still names the event.

Tests

  • Rust unit tests (21): formats and merging, level ranking and caps, colour rules, the file sink, a damaged batch, the exit flush with a stalled reader, pipe chunking, refused strategies, unparseable fields.
  • HandlerLogs_test (7):
    • context.log and every console method from handler code
    • non-JSON params, including AggregateError
    • event, register and effect fields
    • a batch of several events
    • a silent preload that leaves no trace
  • Logging.test.ts (11):
    • exact snapshots per strategy, including user lines at warn and indexer lines at uerror
    • piped order of console and logger lines
    • lines written when the process ends by a signal, a handled signal, process.exit, or after a 3 MB line
  • SupervisorFork_test: a worker's exit is seen while a process it started holds its output.
  • ErrorHandling_test: a thrown string headlines its failure line.
  • Failure link: IndexerRunnerFailure_test, ScenarioFailureReport_test.

Not covered by a narrow test:

  • The file strategies' content at process level. Only Rust unit tests check it.
  • The default supervisor forwarding. Only e2e covers it.
  • A running TUI with logging.
  • Node 22. CI runs one Node version.

Known limits

  • While a batch runs, code started by an earlier handler of that batch logs under the current item.
  • A logger can nest at most 255 levels of bound fields.
  • The generated scenarios/*/src/Indexer.res files were reformatted whole, because the push check refuses unformatted ReScript.

Follow-ups

  • Logs in createTestIndexer, and onTestFailed for tests that time out.
  • Size-based LOG_FILE rotation.

The logger is now a Rust `Logger` napi class: level filtering, the pretty,
JSON and ECS formats, stdout/file sinks and an in-memory capture all live in
`packages/cli/src/logger`. Stdout lines go above a running TUI through the
same path Rust's own logs use. pino, pino-pretty and ecs-pino-format are gone.

There is no process-global logger anymore. The entry points (Bin, the user
`createTestIndexer`) build one from the environment and hand it down:
IndexerState, Persistence, storage, Hasura, ClickHouse, sources, handler
registration and the supervisor all take it as an argument. Each chain gets
its own via `Logging.forChain`, which binds the chain id to every line; item
loggers build on it. The level check stays on the JS side so a skipped line
is never serialized.

Tests pass a capturing logger instead of swapping a global one. Every
IndexerRunner run captures its lines in memory, so nothing reaches stdout:
`indexer.logs()` keeps the info-and-above view, `indexer.jsonLogs()` returns
every line as JSON, and `~captureLogs` is gone. A failing run writes its
lines to `.test-logs/<test>-<schema>.jsonl` and ends its failure message with
`Logs: <path>`, so the logs are one read away without filling the output.

- `Logging`: drop the unused `isEnabled`, `debug`, `fatal` and the capture
level parameter; `setLevel` reads the new minimum off the one napi call.
- `Ecosystem.getItemUserLogger` goes; the contract register context builds
its item logger in one place.
- `finishRegistration` logs through the registration it finishes, so it no
longer takes a logger of its own.
- `IndexerRunner.run` takes the run's logger, which lets `Scenario` make its
registration up front instead of on the first pass.
- SourceManager and FetchState tests make their don't-care loggers once per
file rather than at each of ~140 call sites.

A logger is made per query and per event whether or not it ever writes, and
each one used to cost a call into Rust, a JSON parse and a copy of every
parent field. A child is now a ReScript record of its fields: they are
serialized and joined to the parent's once, on the first line that passes the
level, and travel with each line. Rust merges them with the line's params,
the later value winning in the key's first place.

Rust no longer builds value trees for a line. Fields are read as raw JSON and
copied straight into JSON and ECS lines; only pretty output, test capture and
an ECS `err` look inside. A field named like a key the format writes itself
gives way to the line's own. JS skips the Error/BigInt replacer for params of
plain values, and stdout's terminal check is made once per process.

One-shot children (pruning, fetch-state warnings, finalize, add chain) are
plain calls with params.

Release build, per call through Logging.res:
child per query that never writes 5813 -> 44 ns
child per query, one info line 10955 -> 3505 ns
info with flat params 3651 -> 2088 ns
  errorWithExn                        7902 -> 4695 ns
  pretty to stdout                    3507 -> 2773 ns

… what they do

Env no longer builds the logger or imports Logging: `Env.Logging` holds the
plain values (strategy, file, levels) and each entry point builds its logger
with `Logging.make(config)`. The test indexer's silence is now its default
level rather than a setLevel after the fact.

Rust is the one place that knows LOG_STRATEGY values; an unknown one is
refused naming the variable and listing the valid values. Rust exports its
levels, and a contract test holds `Logging.levelNumber` to them. SILENT is
the largest value ReScript's int holds, so both sides agree on it.

FetchState reports what it skips or switches as typed notices through
`~onNotice`, and ChainState turns them into log lines. The reorg line moves
from ReorgDetection to ChainFetching, which decides what to log.

Renames, so each name says what it does or what it's for:
  Logging.capture/captured/writeCaptured -> makeInMemory/inMemoryLines/writeInMemoryLinesToFile
  Logging.child/forChain -> withFields/withChainId
  Logging.log -> logAt;  levelValue -> levelNumber
  Logging.userLogger/noopLogger -> asContextLog/silentContextLog
  getItemLogger/itemLogger -> loggerForItem;  toEventLogger -> withEventFields
  indexer.logs()/jsonLogs() -> infoAndAboveLogs()/allLogsAsJson()
  Supervisor.logFilePath -> workerLogFilePath
  Rust: format::{json,ecs,pretty,captured} -> write_*_line / to_captured_line,
        fields::{parse,merge} -> parse_object_fields / merge_later_wins

…to Logger

- A logger's level is set once by `Logger.make`; `setLevel` is gone on both
sides and a sink's level is a plain value. The format fixture makes a logger
per level instead of switching one.
- `logLevels()` and its contract test were exports for a test alone. The
format snapshot test, which runs a real process at every level, is what
holds the ReScript and Rust level numbers together.
- `Logging_test` reached into internals. `HandlerLogs_test` covers the same
  ground from a handler's `context.log` in a scenario: the event's fields
bound, a param replacing one in place, a bigint, an error's stack.
- `Logging.res` is now `Logger.res` (`Logger.t`, `Logger.make`), and its
  config section `Env.Logger`.
- Dead code removed: `ErrorHandling.{raiseExn, logAndRaise, unwrapLogAndRaise}`,
  `HandlerRegister.isPendingRegistration`, `SourceManager.isRateLimited`.

LOG_STRATEGY=in-memory was accepted, so a deployment could capture its logs in
memory and print nothing.

📝 Walkthrough

The pull request replaces global Pino logging with a Rust-backed logger and explicit logger injection. Runtime components use structured fields and typed notices. Tests capture in-memory logs, expose them for assertions, and write JSONL logs for failed runs.

Changes: Logger replacement and runtime integration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Rust logger and output sinks
packages/cli/src/logger/*, packages/cli/src/tui/mod.rs
Adds level handling, ordered field merging, JSON/ECS/pretty formatting, configurable sinks, TUI-aware stdout output, in-memory capture, and N-API operations.

- context.log keeps an Error passed as params (under err), a non-string
message, and circular params ([Circular]) instead of throwing or dropping them
- A fatal failure without a message is headlined with the error's own message
- Fields serde refuses no longer make a log call throw
- NO_COLOR wins over FORCE_COLOR
- ecs-file and both-prettyconsole files keep pino's level floor (info, and the
terminal level) instead of writing trace by default
- The test indexer's logger is made once per process and stays silent in the
  file unless LOG_LEVEL is set

The logger writes stdout from Rust synchronously, while Node queues a
console.log that a full pipe can't take yet, so logger lines overtook and split
queued ones (a worker piped to the supervisor, or envio start | tee). Making a
logger blocks Node's stdout too.

Every console method formats as Node's would and is written as a line at the
u* level its method names (log/info/table/... uinfo, debug/trace udebug,
warn/assert uwarn, error uerror), so handler output follows LOG_STRATEGY and
the user log level, prints above the display, and is captured in tests. The
process running handlers routes it; the supervisor still forwards its workers'
lines through the display's redirect.

Keep the original failure if the log file write fails.

logger->writeLogsForFailure can throw, for example when .test-logs cannot be created or the path is not writable. The exception then replaces the real test failure. This is the same concern as the earlier review comment, and the code is still unguarded.

Every process routes console through its logger from Main.start, so the
supervisor passes its workers' already formatted lines straight to the addon
(above the display, or to stdout/stderr) instead of through console and the
display's console redirect, which goes. With no Node writer left beside the
logger, Node's stdout no longer needs blocking; the logger still waits out a
pipe that's full.

Assert the complete forwarded payloads.

The current assertion keeps only the first two words of each message. It can therefore pass when the 200,000-character console text is truncated or omitted, and when the logger’s pad field is missing. Parse the entries once, then assert the full console message and the logger pad field.

Suggested test change
- const lines = output

Update the test around the output parsing to retain complete parsed entries
instead of only message prefixes. Assert each console entry contains the full

while preserving the existing ordering and prefix assertions.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Handle failed worker-line writes.

If either write fails, these exports still return successfully and silently drop the worker line. Propagate the error or handle it explicitly so the supervisor can detect failed forwarding. Based on learnings: “In Rust, do not discard Result values with patterns like let _ = fallible_call();.”

log/info/debug/warn/error check the level before formatting anything, and
read a message plus one plain object (or an Error) as context.log's message
and params, so it prints and ships as fields; anything else is formatted into
the message as Node's console would. The rarer methods keep Node's Console.

…lent

A console call in user code now carries the fields context.log would: the
event for a handler or contract register, plus the effect's name for an
effect. A batch's handlers share one async context entered per batch, with the
item swapped in before each handler; a batch's preload runs in a silent one, as
its handlers' runs proper say it all again; effects and contract registers,
which run alongside others, enter their own. Only where Node keeps async
context in frames (Node 24+, or the flag before), since elsewhere it slows
every await in the process; there, lines go without the fields.

A load groups calls from many items, so naming one of them was arbitrary. The
chain scope each load already takes picks the logger, and the item no longer
threads through LoadLayer; the effect cache takes its chain from the effect's

…t flush

On a pipe, which split-run workers share, a batch is written in line-aligned
pieces of at most PIPE_BUF bytes, which a pipe never interleaves. Worker stderr
gets the same waiting write as stdout instead of dropping a line on EAGAIN, and
the TUI keeps the blank line between records across batches. The queue holds
16 batches, not 256, and the exit flush gives up after 5s on a reader that
stopped reading.

- Every logger is flushed by one process-wide hook, on exit and on SIGINT,
SIGTERM or SIGHUP, which is then raised again when nothing else handles it,
so a worker stopped by its supervisor no longer loses its last lines
- Params take the fast path only as a plain object; a Date, a class with
toJSON, a function or a symbol serialize as JSON.stringify would
- A console call finds its logger before formatting, so a preload's calls cost
nothing; console.clear no longer wipes the display
- The line buffer returns to its size after a line that grew it, and writes
  through the documented Buffer.write
- An item's address is escaped, since simulate input can set it to any string,
and EVM and Fuel share one builder for an item's fields
- An effect's logger is made once, when it first logs

The supervisor waits for a worker's close, not its exit: Node reports the exit
before the worker's piped output has all been read, so its last lines (often
the error it died of) could miss the display.

- flush waits for the writer within one deadline, so a full queue behind a
reader that stopped reading can no longer keep the process from exiting
- a write that returns 0 bytes is an error instead of a busy loop
- stdout and stderr are written through the process's own descriptors; the
retry on EAGAIN, not a dup, is what keeps lines from being dropped
- ECS writes `error` once when `err` is written as it
- pretty output drops params named like the line's own keys, as JSON does
- console.count/time don't count the silent preload run
- a scope ends with its run: work a preload or batch started that logs later
goes to the root logger instead of being dropped or misattributed
- context.log in an effect carries the effect's name, as console does
- an AggregateError keeps its errors
- typed buffer handling in Logger.res; paramsToJson builds its helpers once
- tests for a damaged batch, process.exit, a handled signal, a line larger
than the buffer, and a batch of several events

- derived loggers serialize their fields when made instead of on their first
line: they're made per line or per query, so the laziness saved nothing
- item loggers are made per line instead of cached on the item, which added a
property to every item that logged and ignored the parent logger it was given
- an effect's `console` and `context.log` share one logger, kept by the
effect's context, instead of a Lazy and two WeakMaps
- a thrown string headlines its failure line, as it did before
- the supervisor sees a worker's exit even when a process the worker started
  keeps its output pipe open

A user's lines keep their own level names and numbers, so a line still says
whose it is, but a threshold now ranks udebug, uinfo, uwarn and uerror as
debug, info, warn and error. LOG_LEVEL=warn no longer hides a handler's
console.error or context.log.error, and LOG_LEVEL=uerror lets through no more
than LOG_LEVEL=error would.
