Correct the canonical ownership document to describe the working pure flat-text package and published lawpack separately from the unfinished authored persistent rope, stateful execution and installed Jim release.

Repair the historical basis-identity comparison recipe by freezing its matching application manifest and lawpack closure from Jedit 9e64661. Record every retained file hash, and copy this independent fixture rather than the evolving current application. A Node preflight validates every recorded path and hash, rejects missing or extra files and unsafe paths, and emits runtime checksums covering both the closure and provenance JSON. The runtime shell verifies those checksums before compiling either source. Compiler 3f81f759, provider 49e9efb6 and Rust 1.94.0 remain the historical probe basis. The current flat-text package, source and producer locks are unchanged.

Validation: the original current-closure copy fails the public compiler with SourceImportMismatch. Both repaired comparison sources build successfully through the same pinned compiler/provider and emit accepted independent-verifier reports. All frozen file hashes and both imports match the historical publication. Ten preflight tests pass on macOS and Linux, covering the intact closure, tampered, missing and unrecorded files, invalid provenance fields, escaping paths, matching-byte leaf and metadata symlinks, and a synchronized leaf-symlink swap after traversal. The race case accepted before the descriptor fix and refuses afterward. Files and provenance are opened with O_NOFOLLOW, descriptor-checked as regular files, read through that descriptor and closed. The supported input is an immutable Docker COPY snapshot; hostile concurrent ancestor-directory replacement is outside this probe contract. The actual Linux runtime checksum command succeeds on intact inputs, refuses a changed manifest, then succeeds after restoration. Quality gate, shell syntax and diff checks pass. The initial disposable image build ran out of Docker filesystem space before the probe; successful public builds used the existing worker with host-backed copied inputs and build cache. No successful image build is claimed.

Resolves both review findings on #302. The full persistent-rope/effect/admission/recovery acceptance remains open in #296.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Clarified that the verified flat-text replacement package is distinct from the unfinished rope-based operation and other unimplemented release components.
    • Added reproduction guidance and documented the package’s verified consistency across macOS and Linux.
    • Documented the frozen historical inputs used by the comparison probe and how their integrity is checked.
  • Tests
    • Updated the basis-identity comparison probe to use a complete, frozen lawpack closure.
    • Added checks that refuse missing, altered, unexpected, or unsafe historical inputs before they can affect probe results.

Walkthrough

The changes update the ReplaceRange ownership record and changelog. The basis-identity probe adds a frozen application and lawpack closure, verifies its provenance and checksums, and uses that closure in its comparison build.

Changes

ReplaceRange status and basis-identity probe

Layer / File(s) Summary
Frozen application and lawpack closure
edict/replace-range-probes/basis-identity/application/edict.application.json, edict/replace-range-probes/basis-identity/application/vendor/jedit-text/*, edict/replace-range-probes/basis-identity/application-provenance.json
The probe adds application configuration, a lawpack output manifest, verifier and operation metadata, checksums, and provenance for the frozen application closure.
Closure verification and build integration
edict/replace-range-probes/basis-identity/verify-closure.mjs, edict/replace-range-probes/basis-identity/verify-closure.spec.mjs, edict/replace-range-probes/basis-identity/Dockerfile, edict/replace-range-probes/basis-identity/build.sh, edict/replace-range-probes/basis-identity/README.md
The verifier checks provenance, file hashes, safe paths, and exact closure membership. Tests cover valid and invalid closures. The container and comparison builds use checksum-verified files. The README describes the pinned source and closure checks.
ReplaceRange ownership record
CHANGELOG.md, docs/jim-component-ownership.md
The records distinguish the pure flat-text reference from the unfinished persistent-rope operation and other absent or unproven components. They state that native text-operation authority remains unchanged.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Within the supported workflow, manipulated closure inputs affect the probe image and its two comparison-package outputs. Changing both receipt and files requires control over trusted build inputs; this does not establish a new lower-trust path to production state or credentials.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Application files and provenance are opened with O_NOFOLLOW, checked as regular files through their descriptors, read through those descriptors and closed in finally. Path validation rejects traversal and checksum-line injection characters. The test module includes matching-byte symlink cases and a synchronized leaf-symlink swap before opening.
  • observed — The safety contract requires a build-owned immutable input tree. Hostile concurrent ancestor-directory replacement is explicitly excluded; descriptor protection for leaf files is not presented as a sandbox for shared mutable trees.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The Docker handoff contains failed or interrupted checksum publication because the stage succeeds only after tests and verification complete. Runtime checksum rejection precedes comparison preparation. Comparison outputs remain incrementally produced rather than atomically published; the existing success marker is emitted only after both builds finish, and recovery uses a fresh disposable container.

@coderabbitai review

Please review current head eba191c and update the earlier verdict if the repair satisfies your finding. The requested checks are implemented: the Node preflight validates every recorded path and hash, refuses missing or unrecorded files and unsafe paths, and emits runtime checksums that also bind the provenance JSON before either comparison compile. Five Linux preflight tests and actual manifest/provenance tamper refusals pass. All current-head CI checks are green, and the original finding thread is resolved. The normal merge remains blocked by the earlier changes-requested verdict.

9-9: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality

The concern is refuted. build.sh checks /application-checksums.sha256 before the compiler runs at line 21. The Dockerfile generates the checksum projection during image build, copies it into the runtime image, and invokes build.sh. The changelog statement is accurate.

Do not add the containment check. The path filters prevent traversal, and join(root, path) keeps the tested drive-qualified paths under root rather than resolving them as absolute paths. The proposed check would also fail to recognize Windows backslash-based relative traversal.

Likely an incorrect or invalid review comment.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Pin the base image by digest.

node:22.23.1-bookworm is a mutable tag. The goal is a frozen, reproducible closure. The Node stage only runs hash verification, so risk is low. The runtime image also uses rust:1.94.0-bookworm by tag. Pin both with @sha256: digests for strict reproducibility.

The Checkov hints (HEALTHCHECK, non-root user) do not apply to a one-shot disposable probe image. Do not change code only to silence them.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Resolve the receipt path to the actual provenance location.

relative(root, resolve(provenance)) yields a path such as ../application-provenance.json when the receipt sits beside application/. That is the case in both the Dockerfile and the spec. The checksum line then reads <hash> ../application-provenance.json. This line only works when sha256sum --check runs from /application-source. It resolves to /application-provenance.json, which the Dockerfile copies there. This coupling is implicit and fragile. If the layout changes, the check fails or reads a wrong file. Document the contract in a comment, or pass the receipt base name explicitly.

@coderabbitai review

Please review current head 85e7b0a and reconcile the earlier verdict. All three finding threads are marked addressed and resolved, including descriptor-based O_NOFOLLOW reads, directory revalidation, provenance and matching-byte symlink cases, invalid-envelope cases, and the path-specific refusal assertion. The synchronized leaf-swap case accepted before the fix and refuses afterward. Ten preflight tests pass on macOS and Linux. All exact-head CI checks are green and the independent current-head review found no issues. The documented input boundary is an immutable Docker COPY snapshot. The normal merge is still blocked by the prior changes-requested review.
