Refs #1461

Cause. For a per-machine install, the silent update (/S, since #1439) asks for UAC inside electron-builder's install section, after quitAndInstall has already closed the app. On a refusal (1223) installer.nsi just Quits, so OpenScreen stays closed.

Fix. A customInit hook in build/installer.nsh performs the same elevation earlier, in .onInit, and relaunches the installed app when elevation fails. On success it quits exactly like the stock section. The downloaded update stays cached, so the user can retry. No TS change.

Tested. The installer compiles with the hook included (electron-builder --win nsis --prepackaged, checked in builder-debug.yml). Not tested: a real UAC refusal, which needs a click on the secure desktop.

Overlap. A separate local branch (codex/fix-uac-cancel) tackles the same issue from the TS side, launching the installer without quitting. Only one of the two should land.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Silent per-machine installations started by non-administrators now request administrator approval before proceeding.
    • If that approval cannot be obtained and force-run is enabled, the installer opens the installed application.

…s declined

A silent update of a per-machine NSIS install elevates in the install
section, after the app has quit. Declining UAC (1223) made the stock
installer just quit, leaving OpenScreen closed. Elevate in customInit
instead and relaunch the installed app if elevation fails.

Walkthrough

The installer adds a customInit macro. For silent per-machine installs running without administrator privileges, it requests elevation and exits. If elevation returns a nonzero result and isForceRun is set, it first opens the installed application.

The new customInit macro requests elevation for silent per-machine installs when the process is not an administrator, then exits. If elevation returns a nonzero result and isForceRun is set, it opens the installed application before exiting.

The change is mergeable with normal checks. Adding a per-machine Windows checklist scenario would help verify that declining UAC relaunches OpenScreen; that interactive behavior has not yet been exercised.

Add a manual checklist row for the UAC-decline relaunch.

The customInit branch in build/installer.nsh runs on every silent update of a per-machine install by a non-admin user. It calls UAC_RunElevated and then Quit, whether or not elevation succeeds. Only the ExecShell relaunch depends on the nonzero $0 check. No automated test runs this macro. electron/auto-updater.test.ts mocks quitAndInstall and asserts only its arguments, so a branch that quits without relaunching still passes.

Add a row for the declined-UAC case to technical-documentation/testing/manual-e2e-checklist.md. The row must use a per-machine install. The existing local-feed steps use a per-user install, which skips UAC.

📝 Suggested checklist row
 - [ ] **post-2.1.2** — The agent-only user. On the installed build, write `{"latestVersion":"9.9.9","checkedAt":<now in ms>}` to `mcp-update-check.json` in `userData`, then start `Openscreen mcp` and send it an `initialize` request. ... On Windows the first line Electron writes is blank.
+- [ ] **post-2.1.2** — On a per-machine Windows install, make a silent update available, then decline the UAC prompt. Confirm OpenScreen relaunches.
