v0.2.40.0 fix: replays leave, open and reload without stale frames, and their entries and exits behave as the learner chose (Cycle 0052, PR-1 of 3) - #125
Cycle 0052 is a bug-fix cycle (#124) that closes every defect Cycle 0051 carried. This is its first pull request (cycle-0052-pt1, Owner decision O1): replays leave, open and reload without stale frames, and their entries and exits behave as the learner chose. Tasks 1, 5, 7 to 11, 17, 19 to 23, 26 and 27 follow in pt2 and pt3.
Leaving a replay shows nothing of the other side (tasks 2, 3, 4, 6)
Retiring a test replay withdraws its Learning summary before any publish, and the summary receives only messages of a shown replay family, so Return to Live never draws the Live Study page there and the transport never shows the other family's controls.
shownReplayFamily() answers from what is shown (a selected or opening test replay, a recording, a same-study Reload), never from a missing recording.
The Application pane takes back its title codebook · Application after a browser replay.
Entries do what the learner chose (tasks 12 to 16, 30, 35)
Close, the learner's Return and an agent's Return bump the entry ticket, so a waiting Open replay neither asks again nor reopens a closed reader; a Return while a test replay is still opening ends that open at once in Live.
A superseded or failed open leaves the empty summary composition only when no newer entry is under way (nodeHistoryEntriesUnderWay), so it never takes the composition from a newer Open replay.
Open replay into a standing composition shows a hidden summary and bottom panel again, after waiting for the work window's focus; a superseded reveal ends quietly.
A browser study chosen over a test replay while the bottom panel is maximized waits for the editor area, and so do the replay's recorded-source tabs (nodeSourceSlotTabsAwaitingArea, with Cursor's rebuilt tab objects matched by address through pruneClosedTabRecord and replacedTabAddresses); a refused close is told and retried at the next display.
A same-study Reload keeps its browser replay shown (tasks 18, 28, 29, 31 to 33, 36, 37)
One predicate, browserReplayShown() (a loaded recording, or a Reload that is loading or failed), now decides the composition, refresh, test replay entries, Saved studies choices (they open the chosen recording), step selection (refused until loaded), Reload and Retry (reloadShownRecording() cancels a pending load first), the Live tab, runtime release, Focus source, study deletion, the views' recording projection and the agent-visible state (contentTab: 'recording', followingCurrentRun: false).
A browser recording opened over a test replay gives the Learning summary its document again (giveSummaryItsDocument()), so its loading, failure and recovery show.
Release: v0.2.40.0 (VERSION, extension/package.json, EXTENSION_VERSION, the package test's expected version, CHANGELOG). The MCP API stays 1.8, the bundled skill is unchanged and no stored format changes.
Changed existing tests (Acceptance criterion 6): five assertions in studyWorkspace.test.ts, studyWorkspaceTestReplayOutput.test.ts and studyWorkspaceTestReplaySource.test.ts read the bottom panel instead of the Learning summary, because the summary no longer receives Study messages once a replay is left (task 2); the assertions are unchanged. Two Reload tests were parametrized over a held and a failed load. The harness counts the extension's reads of the window focus while the window is unfocused (unfocusedWindowReads()), so two focus tests wait on it instead of fixed timers.
Test Coverage
Coverage audit (Step 7, two generation passes plus a read-only rating): 30 changed code paths; 29 have a ★★/★★★ test (97% value-weighted, 97% with any test), no weak paths. The one untested path is the entry-ticket check after the focus wait in enterSummaryCompositionForReplay, which no test can observe (a Return leaves the summary hidden and a newer entry reveals the same summary; mutation evidence). Two redundant lines (the early-end slot close in showStudyAwaitingEditorArea, the waiting-record reset in close()) are kept as defensive resets, by mutation evidence.
Tests: 436 → 436 test files (every new test sits in an existing file; one new fixture tests/utils/saveOtherBrowserStudy.ts). Every product fix of this PR has a host test that was red on the commit before its fix (named per task in #124).
Test value: 3 tests written by the coverage audit, 4 rejected by the authoring gate, 0 existing tests extended, 0 paths weakly covered.
Tests ran: tests count unavailable (receipt), runner summary 6762 pass of 6768 on 8e78115.
Pre-Landing Review
/ship ran its three fixing cycles (owner rule, 2026-10-18/2026-10-23) and did not converge: converged:false. Every finding of the last round is fixed (Minor and below included); no Critical or Major defect stays open, so no follow-up Issue was needed.
Step 9, pass 1 (testing, maintainability, security, performance, simplification, state-machines, Red Team): a wrong state row (a Saved studies choice after a failed Reload), eight untested state cells, a cross-cutting gap in the agent-visible state, stale JSDoc and two unit edge cases. Fixed in 40d30aa (tasks 28, 29, 30).
Step 9, pass 2: Reload pressed again after a failed Reload refused, Retry and the Live tab ignoring the Reload, five more state cells. Fixed in 0a8d85d (tasks 31, 32).
Step 11 (adversarial, last round): Claude adversarial (11 items: two confirmed, nine closed by evidence, task 34), Codex adversarial (4 Medium) and Codex structured review (codex review --base origin/main, 2 P2, gate PASS, no P0/P1). Six fixes in 40ecb54 (task 35).
Gate edits: 16 listed, 6 read, 0 findings: the five repointed assertions above and the harness's window-state reader, each justified by the change visible in the diff.
Local CodeRabbit CLI (no round limit): rounds 1 to 10 on the implementation, round 11 (5 findings, fixed in a6a6a5d, task 36), round 12 (1 finding, fixed in e393b9f, task 37), round 13 on 032a520: 0 findings. Logs are private (artifacts/cycle-0052/review/).
open-code-review-delegate: host review of studyWorkspace.ts, constants.ts and the two utils (test files excluded by OCR's defaults); its one defect was fixed in 35e0215 with a red test.
Outside review: Codex adversarial and structured review completed (no P0/P1).
Exploratory QA
Functional surface through the repository's host-test harness, three passes (one per review pass), 5-minute/12-probe smoke budget each: 7 probes, every one pass (verdict pass each time). Captures: Learning summary withdrawal (task 2), entry supersession by Close and Returns (tasks 12, 13, 30), the editor-area wait (task 15), the same-study Reload mark across choices, selection, state, Reload, Retry, tab, Return, Close and refresh. Limit: host-harness evidence proves no native pixels, DAP targeting or installed VSIX behavior; the native checks below cover that.

No frontend files changed (SCOPE_FRONTEND=false); design review skipped.

Every user-visible behavior in the CHANGELOG 0.2.40.0 entry has a sentence in extension/README.md, including the later additions (a reloading recording's loading or failure on the replay's status line; the Application pane keeping the recording through refreshes, a runtime release and Focus source). VERSION, extension/package.json and the CHANGELOG heading read 0.2.40.0. The MCP API stays 1.8 and the bundled skill is unchanged.

The two tests of an agent's Return that supersedes an entering entry assert that the summary holds no reader document, instead of the placeholder, because an entry superseded before open() now builds nothing; both still fail when the superseded entry's leave is removed.
