An extension can ask for the model in use in three ways. In the TUI,
each one gave a wrong result in some state:
GetModelCapabilities("") resolved the configured model, because
Kit.GetCurrentModel() read the configuration. After /model or
ctx.SetModel, it still described the model from startup.
GetCurrentProvider and GetCurrentModelID parsed Context.Model, which
is only the model ID until the first switch. They returned "" at
startup, or a wrong split for a model ID with "/", as in
openrouter/anthropic/claude-opus-5.
Kit.GetCurrentModel() now returns the model in use: the configured
model until SetModel switches it. GetCurrentProvider and
GetCurrentModelID take the model from it.
TestBaseContext_CurrentModelFollowsSwitch checks the three values and
GetCurrentModel() at the start and after SetModel.
Testing: go vet ./... and go test -race ./... on master f9e6cc5 give
the same results with and without the change. All packages pass,
except TestSetParentLinkErrorKeepsLock in internal/session: it fails on
master too when the tests run as root. The new test fails on master
with six failed checks. It also fails if either of the two changes is
missing. In the TUI, with openrouter/anthropic/claude-opus-5
configured, a test extension now gets the provider openrouter and the
model ID anthropic/claude-opus-5 at startup, and the new model after
/model and after /reload-ext. status-footer.go shows the cost after
/model from ollama/llama3 to anthropic/claude-opus-5-5, instead of
"cost n/a".

Walkthrough
Kit.GetCurrentModel returns the active model string. Extension bridge capability, provider, and model-ID lookups now use that value. A test checks reported values before and after SetModel.
Changes: Active model reporting
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Return the active model pkg/kit/kit.go, www/pages/sdk/api-reference.md
Kit.GetCurrentModel returns modelString before checking the configuration store. The API reference describes the configured model before SetModel switches it.
Use the active model in bridge lookups internal/extbridge/context.go, internal/extbridge/model_capabilities_test.go
Bridge capability, provider, and model-ID lookups use the Kit’s current model. The test checks the reported model before and after SetModel.
mark3labs/kit#263: The example uses ctx.Model and a registry lookup to mark the current model, overlapping with this PR’s updated model identification.

Switching models during an active turn can race with extension model reporting. Synchronizing those accesses is a localized fix; otherwise the change has bounded merge risk.

Explanation
The title "fix(extensions): report the model in use" matches the main change. The PR makes Kit.GetCurrentModel, GetCurrentProvider, and GetCurrentModelID resolve the active model through kitInstance.GetCurrentModel(), so extensions report the model in use after startup and after SetModel. The title is short, names the affected area (extensions), and states the purpose of the fix. It does not mention the test or the docs, which is expected.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
The changes satisfy the coding requirements in [#266]. BaseContext.GetModelCapabilities(""), GetCurrentProvider(), and GetCurrentModelID() now use Kit.GetCurrentModel(). GetCurrentModel() returns the configured model until SetModel changes the active model. The bridge passes the full registry-addressable model to the existing provider and model-ID accessors, so model IDs that contain / remain unambiguous. TestBaseContext_CurrentModelFollowsSwitch checks startup and post-SetModel behavior for all required values.

Explanation
The changes stay within [#266]. The bridge changes implement active-model reporting. The new test verifies the issue behavior. The GetCurrentModel documentation update describes the changed contract. No unrelated product behavior or unrelated files appear in the pull request.

Cover a cross-provider switch in the current-model test.
Both checks in TestBaseContext_CurrentModelFollowsSwitch expect anthropic. A bridge that kept the startup provider would still pass. Add a switch to a model from a different provider. Assert the provider and model ID after that switch. Set the other provider's API key in the test, for example with t.Setenv, so the model resolves.

116 - 120:
Extend TestBaseContext_CurrentModelFollowsSwitch to switch from the initial
Anthropic model to a model from a different provider, setting that provider’s
API key with t.Setenv so the model resolves. Assert that the resulting current
provider and model ID both match the switched-to model.
The example recorded each model switch with OnModelChange. A reload of
the extensions loses that record. With the configured model
openrouter/anthropic/claude-opus-5 and anthropic/claude-opus-5 in use
after a switch, the picker then marked the configured model, and
/preferred 1 answered "Already using".
mark3labs#267 makes GetCurrentProvider and GetCurrentModelID report the
model in use, also at startup and after a reload. currentModel now
joins the two, and the record of switches and its handler are gone. A
model that the registry does not know, such as an ollama model, now
gets the mark at startup too.
The tests give the example a context that behaves like Kit with
mark3labs#267. TestPreferredModelsExampleAfterReload covers the reload.
TestPreferredModelsExampleIgnoresInvalidPickerIndex checks that a
picker index outside the list switches nothing.

setModelLocked writes Kit.modelString with promptOptsMu held. Several
accessors read it without a lock: GetModelString, GetModelInfo,
SupportedThinkingLevels, ModelModes, ExecuteCompletion and Subagent.
The previous commit added GetCurrentModel to them, and moved
GetCurrentProvider and GetCurrentModelID from Context.Model, which the
runner reads under its lock, to GetCurrentModel. Extensions call the
accessors from their own goroutines while the TUI or another extension
switches the model. That is a data race.
The accessors cannot take promptOptsMu. applyPromptOptions holds it for
a whole PromptWithOptions turn, and the LLM usage event reads the model
inside the turn, so the read would block the turn.
Kit.modelString gets its own lock, modelMu. setModelLocked writes under
it, GetModelString reads under it, and the other accessors read through
GetModelString. The reads in setModelLocked, applyPromptOptions,
SetThinkingLevel and SetModelMode stay as they are: they run with
promptOptsMu held, which serializes them with the writer.
TestSetModelConcurrentWithModelReads runs the accessors while SetModel
runs, for -race. TestModelAccessorsDoNotWaitForPromptOptions reads the
model while promptOptsMu is held.
TestBaseContext_CurrentModelFollowsSwitch now switches from Anthropic to
OpenAI. With two Anthropic models it checked the model ID after the
switch, but not the provider. The test sets OPENAI_API_KEY to a dummy
value, as the pkg/kit tests do, because the key from newTestKit is bound
to the provider of the startup model. The provider constructs without a
request.

Done. Kit.modelString now has its own lock, modelMu. setModelLocked writes under it; that covers /model, ctx.SetModel, SetThinkingLevel and SetModelMode, which all go through setModelLocked. GetModelString reads under it, and GetCurrentModel, GetModelInfo, SupportedThinkingLevels, ModelModes, ExecuteCompletion and Subagent read through GetModelString. The fallback to the configured model for an empty string is unchanged. promptOptsMu stays out of it, as you note: applyPromptOptions holds it for a whole PromptWithOptions turn, and the LLM usage event reads the model inside the turn. Two tests cover this: TestSetModelConcurrentWithModelReads for -race, and TestModelAccessorsDoNotWaitForPromptOptions, which reads the model while promptOptsMu is held.
* feat(extensions): add preferred-models example
/model lists all models of the catalog. To switch between a few models,
for example one model through two providers and a local model, a short
list is faster. The example preferred-models.go adds the command
/preferred for the models in the option preferred-models. The option
lists them as provider/model, separated by commas or spaces.
/preferred opens a picker and marks the model in use. /preferred 2
switches to the second model in the list. /preferred bedrock switches
to the first model whose name contains "bedrock". Tab completes the
model names.
At startup, Context.Model is only the model ID. Then the configured
model is in use, and GetModelCapabilities("") gives its provider if
the registry knows the model. After a model switch, Context.Model is
provider/model, but GetModelCapabilities("") still describes the
configured model. So the example reads Context.Model first.
TestPreferredModelsExample runs the command with this behavior of Kit.
TestPreferredModelsExampleWithoutList checks the hint when the option
is not set.

* fix(extensions): find the current model when its ID contains "/"
At startup, ctx.Model is only the model ID, and a model ID can contain
"/", as in openrouter/anthropic/claude-opus-5. currentModel took such
an ID for provider/model. With this model configured, the picker marked
anthropic/claude-opus-5 as the model in use, and /preferred refused to
switch to it.
The review proposed to ask the registry first. That fixes the start.
But after a switch to anthropic/claude-opus-5, ctx.Model equals the
model ID of the configured model. The picker then marked the configured
model again, and /preferred refused to switch back.
So the example now records every switch with OnModelChange: by
/preferred, by /model and by other extensions. Until the first switch,
it asks the registry for the configured model, and uses it only if its
model ID equals ctx.Model. The README row lists OnModelChange too.
The tests use this configuration now. A new test loads the example
after a switch, as after a reload of the extensions.

* fix(extensions): ask Kit for the model in use
The example recorded each model switch with OnModelChange. A reload of
the extensions loses that record. With the configured model
openrouter/anthropic/claude-opus-5 and anthropic/claude-opus-5 in use
after a switch, the picker then marked the configured model, and
/preferred 1 answered "Already using".
#267 makes GetCurrentProvider and GetCurrentModelID report the
model in use, also at startup and after a reload. currentModel now
joins the two, and the record of switches and its handler are gone. A
model that the registry does not know, such as an ollama model, now
gets the mark at startup too.
The tests give the example a context that behaves like Kit with
#267. TestPreferredModelsExampleAfterReload covers the reload.
TestPreferredModelsExampleIgnoresInvalidPickerIndex checks that a
picker index outside the list switches nothing.
