feat(extensions): add preferred-models example - #263
/model lists all models of the catalog. To switch between a few models,
for example one model through two providers and a local model, a short
list is faster. The example preferred-models.go adds the command
/preferred for the models in the option preferred-models. The option
lists them as provider/model, separated by commas or spaces.
/preferred opens a picker and marks the model in use. /preferred 2
switches to the second model in the list. /preferred bedrock switches
to the first model whose name contains "bedrock". Tab completes the
model names.
The example asks Kit for the model in use with GetCurrentProvider and
GetCurrentModelID. Context.Model is not enough: until the first switch
it is only the model ID, and a model ID can contain "/", as in
openrouter/anthropic/claude-opus-5.
Depends on #267, which makes GetCurrentProvider and
GetCurrentModelID report the model in use. Please merge that PR first.
Without it, the example marks the wrong model at startup when the model
ID contains "/".
The tests give the example a context that behaves like Kit with #267, with openrouter/anthropic/claude-opus-5 configured.
TestPreferredModelsExample switches between the models.
TestPreferredModelsExampleAfterReload loads the example after a switch.
TestPreferredModelsExampleIgnoresInvalidPickerIndex checks a picker
index outside the list. TestPreferredModelsExampleWithoutList checks
the hint when the option is not set.
Testing: go vet ./... and go test -race ./... on master f9e6cc5 with #267 give the same results as on master. All packages pass,
except TestSetParentLinkErrorKeepsLock in internal/session: it fails on
master too when the tests run as root. The new tests fail if the
example uses Context.Model, does not check the picker index, does not
ignore case in names, does not mark the model in use, or does not
complete names. In the TUI, with Kit built from master and #267
/preferred, /preferred 2, a part of a name and Tab completion switch
the model. With openrouter/anthropic/claude-opus-5 configured, the mark
is correct at startup, after a switch and after /reload-ext.
Added an example extension for switching between a configured list of preferred models. Choose a model by its position or name, or open a selection prompt that marks the current model. The /preferred command reports when a model is already active or when a selection cannot be matched. Model names are also available through command completion.
Documentation
Added the preferred-models example to the extension documentation and examples catalog.

At startup, Context.Model is only the model ID. Then the configured
model is in use, and GetModelCapabilities("") gives its provider if
the registry knows the model. After a model switch, Context.Model is
provider/model, but GetModelCapabilities("") still describes the
configured model. So the example reads Context.Model first.
TestPreferredModelsExample runs the command with this behavior of Kit.
TestPreferredModelsExampleWithoutList checks the hint when the option
is not set.

Walkthrough
Adds an example extension that configures a preferred-model list and registers /preferred to select and switch models. The command supports list positions, case-insensitive name matches, picker selection, and model-name completion.

Summary
Preferred-model command and model switching examples/extensions/preferred-models.go

Merge Risk: Low · up to 8cca6
The preferred-model example can mark the wrong model and refuse a valid selection before the first model switch. Switching once through /model provides a workaround; merge risk is bounded to this example workflow.

Explanation
The PR satisfies the coding requirements in issue #262. It adds examples/extensions/preferred-models.go, registers the preferred-models option and /preferred command, parses comma- or whitespace-separated provider/model entries, supports picker selection, numeric selection, case-insensitive name matching, current-model marking, and completion. It adds automated tests for these behaviors, invalid picker indexes, reload behavior, and an unset option. It also adds the requested rows to both example lists.

Cover the out-of-range picker index in /preferred.
The picker mock only returns indexes that it selected from cfg.Options, so the guard at examples/extensions/preferred-models.go:113 is never exercised. Removing that guard leaves the current assertions passing. A test can set an out-of-range Index through SetPromptSelectResult, but it must also set GetModelCapabilities. With empty arguments, /preferred calls currentModel(ctx) before the picker. That call reaches ctx.GetModelCapabilities("") when ctx.Model has no /. The harness context does not set this callback, so the call fails before the guard runs.
This is an optional coverage improvement for defensive code. It does not indicate a production defect.

At startup, ctx.Model is only the model ID, and a model ID can contain
"/", as in openrouter/anthropic/claude-opus-5. currentModel took such
an ID for provider/model. With this model configured, the picker marked
anthropic/claude-opus-5 as the model in use, and /preferred refused to
switch to it.
The review proposed to ask the registry first. That fixes the start.
But after a switch to anthropic/claude-opus-5, ctx.Model equals the
model ID of the configured model. The picker then marked the configured
model again, and /preferred refused to switch back.
So the example now records every switch with OnModelChange: by
/preferred, by /model and by other extensions. Until the first switch,
it asks the registry for the configured model, and uses it only if its
model ID equals ctx.Model. The README row lists OnModelChange too.
The tests use this configuration now. A new test loads the example
after a switch, as after a reload of the extensions.

Note: CodeRabbit is an incremental review system and does not re-review already reviewed commits. This command is applicable only when automatic reviews are paused.
The example recorded each model switch with OnModelChange. A reload of
the extensions loses that record. With the configured model
openrouter/anthropic/claude-opus-5 and anthropic/claude-opus-5 in use
after a switch, the picker then marked the configured model, and
/preferred 1 answered "Already using".
mark3labs#267 makes GetCurrentProvider and GetCurrentModelID report the
model in use, also at startup and after a reload. currentModel now
joins the two, and the record of switches and its handler are gone. A
model that the registry does not know, such as an ollama model, now
gets the mark at startup too.
The tests give the example a context that behaves like Kit with
mark3labs#267. TestPreferredModelsExampleAfterReload covers the reload.
TestPreferredModelsExampleIgnoresInvalidPickerIndex checks that a
picker index outside the list switches nothing.
