Redesign: build the approved design on the redesign branch #35

Description

@meaningfool

The prototype for #8 is approved. This issue tracks building it into the site.

How it ships

  • One integration branch: redesign, created from main. Every sub-issue is one pull request into redesign, not into main. Each pull request gets its own preview link, where the owner approves it.
  • Nothing goes to main until everything is done. When every sub-issue is closed and the owner has approved the full preview, one pull request merges redesign into main, and the whole new site goes live at once.
  • Merge main into redesign from time to time, so content and fixes from main show in the previews and the final merge stays small.

Sub-issues, in order

  1. Redesign: foundations (fonts, colours, header, footer, 404) #29 Foundations: fonts, colours, header, footer, 404. First.
  2. Redesign: page background and topic map, prepared at build time #30 Page background and topic map, prepared at build time. After Redesign: foundations (fonts, colours, header, footer, 404) #29.
  3. Redesign: article page #32 Article page. After Redesign: foundations (fonts, colours, header, footer, 404) #29, in parallel with Redesign: page background and topic map, prepared at build time #30.
  4. Redesign: home page #31 Home page. After Redesign: page background and topic map, prepared at build time #30.
  5. Redesign: About page #33 About page. After Redesign: page background and topic map, prepared at build time #30.
  6. Redesign: share images and favicon #34 Share images and favicon. Any time after Redesign: foundations (fonts, colours, header, footer, 404) #29.

Decided

  • Navigation: Home and About only. No Writing page: the home holds Projects and Writing, and "← All writing" on an article goes to the Writing section.
  • Activity logs leave the home. Their pages keep their URLs, unlisted.
  • RSS: no visible links. /rss.xml keeps working for subscribers.
  • Light theme only. Dark mode can be its own issue later.
  • No shader library or WebGL on the live site: the background and the map are prepared at build time (Redesign: page background and topic map, prepared at build time #30).

Reference

  • The approved prototype and its source, including the map's shape data and the scripts that made it, are in docs/redesign/ on the redesign branch. Its README says how to view and rebuild it.
  • The article design is in the Paper file, page "Variations", artboard "V2 · Article — Serif text".

#34 (share images and favicon) is merged into redesign with #37, merge commit 3df7e38.

    • Preview: https://pr-37-meaningfool.josselin-perrus.workers.dev
    • Review: an independent review accepted head 9fab9bf, and the Deploy build check passed on it.
    • Change made in review: the reading time is now 235 words a minute, which gives the prototype's minutes for all 18 articles.
    • Points left to the owner (listed in Redesign: share images and favicon #37):
      • The orange dot is DejaVu Sans Mono's full stop, so it is smaller than in the Menlo export.
      • The 180px apple-touch-icon keeps the tile's 1px border.

Still in progress: #30 and #32.

#32 (article page) is merged into redesign with #39, as merge commit 572200e.

    • Preview: https://pr-39-meaningfool.josselin-perrus.workers.dev
    • Review: an independent review accepted head 94fffd2, and the Deploy build check passed on it. The review fixed two things:
      • the heading levels in "Agent Frameworks for the Rest of Us";
      • CI's Astro cache was serving stale article HTML after a Markdown plugin changed.
    • Projects: src/data/projects.ts now holds the three projects, with which articles belong to which project, taken from the prototype. It stays in this repo, and nothing was pushed to meaningfool-writing.
    • Proposed for meaningfool-writing, not done (see Redesign: article page #39): to show the design's highlighted row and caption, 2026-05-27-structured-extraction.md needs the Mistral row in bold and a Table: … line after the table.
    • For Redesign: home page #31: "← All writing" links to /#writing, so the home's Writing section needs id="writing".

Still in review: #30, in #38.

#33 (About page) is merged into redesign with #41, merge commit 118b781.

    • Preview: https://pr-41-meaningfool.josselin-perrus.workers.dev
    • Review: an independent review accepted head 1f36b5e with no fixes, and the Deploy build check passed on it.
      • The review tested this unit merged with Redesign: home page #40, and the merged tree (0869662) is the one that landed on redesign.
      • Home → About keeps the same map canvas and background, drawn once, with no page load. The home's filter still works after every move.
    • Points for the owner (listed in Redesign: About page #41):
      • The first figure of the Product part ("€1K / year / customer") is still to be confirmed (see the checklist above).
      • "beats everyday" is kept as written in the issue; "every day" would be the usual spelling.
      • Clicking a dot on About adds the part's #fragment to the address.
      • The site-wide footer also ends About.

All six sub-issues are now merged. A last small cleanup follows before the final pull request: src/styles/legacy.css is no longer used by any page and gets removed.

Merged #42 (remove the unused legacy stylesheet, a cleanup following #33) into redesign as b5c7f46, from accepted head 61b24fd. The rendered site is unchanged: every page is pixel-identical at 1440px and 375px wide, and the only computed-style difference is <html> font-size, from 18px to 16px, which nothing uses any more.

Shipped. At the owner's request, #43 merged redesign into main as e8c17cc. Its tree is identical to redesign at b5c7f46, which the owner reviewed at https://pr-43-meaningfool.josselin-perrus.workers.dev.

The Deploy run for that commit succeeded: https://github.com/meaningfool/meaningfool.github.io/actions/runs/41798642270

    Checked on https://meaningfool.net afterwards:

    • All 60 sitemap pages, /documents/ and the 404 page give the same status and the same HTML as the preview. The only parts set aside were the analytics beacon and the hostname.
    • /rss.xml, /robots.txt, /sitemap-index.xml and /llms.txt return 200.
    • /about redirects to /about/ with a 301, and www redirects to the bare domain.
    • The security headers and the report-only CSP are present. There is no X-Robots-Tag, so search engines can index the site.
    • /documents/ keeps no-transform.

The JSON-LD escaping fix in src/components/JsonLd.astro is a separate task. It was there before the redesign.
