Closes #138

Summary

Adds GET /vault/api/v1/node/health, an authenticated route for the counters an operator pages on. A deployment whose monitor cannot scrape /metrics can read them with an API key.

  • signingFailuresTotal and rulesetLoadFailuresTotal: since the node process started.
  • registryOutbox: pending, submitted, stalled and rejected, read from the database. stalled uses the node's threshold of 8. The block is omitted when no outbox is wired.

Design

  • Liveness stays on the public /health. Trust posture stays on /vault/api/v1/node/state (Unauthenticated /health discloses the node's full trust posture #136), so this route does not repeat it.
  • Both process counters are incremented through dpp_common::metrics::record_*, which also bumps the Prometheus counter of the same name. /metrics and the route read one count.
  • STALL_THRESHOLD moves to dpp_types::registry_sync, so the gauges, the alarms and this route share one value.
  • The smoke harness now wires the registry outbox the way boot::db does. Its vault service had none before, so no smoke test could reach the block.

Not in this PR

Verification

  • just check on the final tree: exit 0, 1728 tests passed, 3 skipped.
  • dpp-node smoke (integration-tests, shared Postgres): 36 of 36 passed, including the new route test.
  • just openapi-check: valid.

Feature-gated suites other than smoke were not run.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added an authenticated node health endpoint reporting signature and ruleset-load failures since process start, plus registry-sync outbox counts when available.
    • Process-lifetime counters reset when the node restarts; outbox counts persist independently. The existing unauthenticated /health endpoint remains liveness-only.
  • Documentation
    • Documented the new endpoint, its authentication requirements, response counters, and reset behavior.

Walkthrough

The node now tracks process-lifetime signing and ruleset-load failures and exposes them through an authenticated health endpoint. The response also includes registry-sync outbox counts when an outbox is configured. The existing unauthenticated /health route remains liveness-only.

Possibly related issues

  • odal-node/dpp-engine#590 — The endpoint exposes the in-process signing and ruleset failure counters; this change documents that they reset on restart but does not add persistence.
  • odal-node/dpp-engine#589 — The endpoint reports stalled rows using threshold 8; this change does not resolve the reported disagreement with the rollup threshold of 5.

Suggested reviewers: odal-node-maintainer

Merge Risk: Low · up to 1ba1e

The endpoint has bounded monitoring inaccuracies: manual reload failures are omitted, and stalled counts include submitted rows despite the documentation. Correct these reporting gaps; no broader operational failure is established.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description explains the route, reported counters, authentication purpose, design decisions, scope exclusions, related issue, and verification results. It does not use the template's exact Related issue, Changes, or Checklist headings, and it does not explicitly confirm every checklist item, but the description is substantially complete.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #138 is the only directly linked issue and is open. Its coding requirements are an authenticated node health route that reports: (a) signing failures, (b) ruleset load failures, (c) registry outbox depth and stalled count, and (d) a last-successful-backup timestamp if the node can know one.

Evidence from the change summary and PR description:

  • (a) and (b): node_health_handler in crates/dpp-vault/src/handlers/node_health.rs returns signingFailuresTotal and rulesetLoadFailuresTotal. Both are backed by process-local counters in crates/dpp-common/src/metrics.rs.
  • (c): The optional registryOutbox block returns pending, submitted, stalled, and rejected from the database. stalled uses STALL_THRESHOLD (8), now defined in dpp_types::registry_sync.
  • Authentication: the route is GET /vault/api/v1/node/health, registered in router.rs. The OpenAPI path definition requires bearer API key or basic auth, and the smoke test covers the authenticated route.
  • Public /health and /vault/api/v1/node/state are unchanged, which matches the issue's separation from #136.
  • (d): lastSuccessfulBackupAt is omitted. The PR states that the nightly backup runs in deployment tooling the node cannot observe, and that per-passport back-up copy writes are not persisted. The issue makes this field conditional ("if the node is in a position to know one"), so the documented omission is consistent with the issue. The backup claim is taken from the PR description and was not verified in code.

Tests: the summary reports unit tests for the counter functions, a serialization test for the absent-outbox case, an OpenAPI contract fixture, and a smoke test for the new route (36 of 36 passed). These results are taken from the PR description and summary, not from re-running the suite.

The deployment-side stalled lookup described in #138 is served by the new registryOutbox.stalled field.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

Each changed area connects to the #138 route or to its required supporting behavior:

  • api/components/schemas/access/NodeHealth.yaml, RegistryOutboxHealth.yaml, api/openapi.yaml, api/paths/vault/vault_api_v1_node_health.yaml: API contract for the new route.
  • CHANGELOG.md: documents the new route. It is documentation for the change.
  • crates/dpp-common/src/metrics.rs: process counters and their record_* and accessor functions, used by the route.
  • crates/dpp-vault/src/domain/service/publish.rs and crates/dpp-node/src/infra/ruleset.rs: switched from direct counter increments to record_signing_failure() and record_ruleset_load_failure(). This ensures /metrics and the route read the same count. The summary states that error handling and metrics behavior are otherwise unchanged.
  • crates/dpp-types/src/registry_sync.rs and crates/dpp-node/src/boot/tasks.rs: move STALL_THRESHOLD to a shared location so the route and the existing tasks use one value.
  • crates/dpp-vault/src/handlers/mod.rs, router.rs, handlers/node_health.rs: route wiring and handler.
  • crates/dpp-node/tests/openapi_contract.rs and crates/dpp-node/tests/smoke.rs: tests for the new route. The smoke harness now wires the registry outbox, which the PR states is required for the new block to appear in a smoke test.

No change is unrelated to #138. The deferred items (#589 rollup stalled threshold, #590 counter persistence) are excluded from this PR, as stated in the PR description.

The bundled OpenAPI artifacts (api/openapi.bundled.json, api/openapi.bundled.yaml) were excluded from review by the ignored-file rule. They were not inspected. No #138 requirement depends on them, so this does not affect the verdict.

(5 skipped: 5 unsupported.)

Full details: Publication Boundary

Explanation

PASS. The reviewed diff adds only the node-health API, metrics, outbox wiring, tests, and documentation. It contains no ADR reference, private-repository name or path, pricing or contract terms, vendor data, or named individual/company in a non-public arrangement. The PR title and description also contain none of these items. The issue references (#138, #136, #590, #589) are not ADR references.

Count refused bundles from the reload route.

reload_ruleset_handler returns a refused bundle as an HTTP error without incrementing ruleset_load_failures_total. Refusals from an operator reload therefore do not appear in GET /vault/api/v1/node/health or in /metrics. Record every reload error except NotConfigured, as reload_and_report already does.

Cover the exported counters in the signing and ruleset failure tests.

The two tests read only the atomic counters. Removing the metrics::counter! call from record_signing_failure or record_ruleset_load_failure leaves both tests passing. The doc comment on these helpers states that the exported and reported counts cannot drift, and no test checks that.

The repository testing guideline asks that a change depending on a behavior fact include a committed #[test] that pins it. Each test should install a scoped recorder with metrics::with_local_recorder and assert that signing_failures_total or ruleset_load_failures_total increases by one. dpp-common has no recorder in [dev-dependencies], so this needs either a test-only recorder dependency that matches the workspace metrics version or a small local Recorder implementation.

Assert the node health values, not only their JSON types.

The smoke test at crates/dpp-node/tests/smoke.rs:374-381 checks that the counters and outbox fields are numbers. A handler that returns constant zeros passes these checks. So does a handler that uses a different threshold from STALL_THRESHOLD. No committed test checks the outbox mapping or the threshold.

Add a test that seeds outbox rows at seven and eight failed attempts. It should assert the returned stalled count at the STALL_THRESHOLD boundary. The process counters are shared across tests in this binary. Record a signing or ruleset failure in the test, then assert that the matching counter increases from its value before the request.
