Desktop owns browser chat, tools, limits, chat history and the vault. The Pro browser extension is a thin client: it reads pages, clicks, fills and shows controls. This PR has the Desktop core side. It also contains #184, merged in, so there is one OGAD PR for this work.

Companion PRs, all on feat/browser-thin-client:

What is in it

Browser bridge:

  • Bounded chat.start / chat.read / chat.stop / chat.control / chat.guide. Desktop selects tools and sets request budgets; the browser never sends a tool catalog.
  • The page arrives as page: { title, url, text } (text up to 100,000 characters). Desktop builds the fenced page block and its budget. Page tags inside page text are escaped.
  • One origin rule for tools.list, tools.run and browser chat. A paired browser never gets computer_use. Plain browser chat gets only read tools; page-changing tools and write connectors need Agent mode.
  • Settings, models, voices, transcription and speech over the sealed bridge. The voice section now carries the playback speed, bounded by the same rule as the Voice tab.
  • An action the page did not confirm is "uncertain". Desktop never sends it again (also when a new snapshot gives the control a new ref), checks the page first, and waits for the user after two in a row. The text that older extensions send maps to the same path.
  • When a web task opens a new tab (Apply Now), the task follows it.

Desktop chat:

  • Enter queues, Cmd/Ctrl+Enter sends now. Send and delete a single queued message. Queued messages survive a restart, saved as file references.
  • Resend, edit and regenerate keep earlier answers as versions; the selected version is what sync, memory, search and the browser read.
  • A chat that fills its context window is summarized by one model call, and the summary is sent in place of the earlier turns on later sends.
  • Standing rules close every system prompt. A conversation keeps its offered tools from turn to turn, so the prompt cache is reused.
  • Chat logic lives in tested modules in src/renderer/src/lib.

Models:

  • Choose where model files live. Move copies only Off Grid's own files, verifies them and deletes the old copies after the next start. Leave keeps the files and scans the old folder. Image, voice and transcription models are read from every model folder.
  • Kev 1.0 checkpoint for Kev 4B. Gemma 4 E4B and 12B MTP companions. "Use fastest settings", and fresh installs start on them. A quiet model load gets ten minutes before the next engine is tried.

Web Use:

  • Step history and guidance memory, a nudge after steps without progress, planning from the page already open, and a debugger fallback session that moves to in-page tools while another extension blocks Chrome's debugger.

Merge of #184

#182 started on 2026-10-11 as a port of #184's work, and both branches then changed the same files. The merge (69ef729) resolved 37 files:

Validation

Run locally under Electron's Node (the SQLite driver is built for Electron) on the final head:

  • Core and Pro typecheck and lint: clean.
  • Unit suite: 7,297 pass. The only failure, macos-artifact-integrity (17 cases), fails under Electron on every head on this Mac and passes under plain Node.
  • DB suite (real SQLite): 586 pass. Failing files: memory-chat-tts.ui, meeting-persistence, fresh-setup-first-use and image-runtime-reliability, which also fail on the untouched base on this Mac and pass in CI; and tools-vision, which times out on a cold start and passes when run again (it also failed before the merge).
  • Native Electron suites: extension-chat, extension-bridge, chat-next-action, task-stop, web-use-debugger and web-use-failure pass. web-use-failure now drives the real task host with a synthetic model server and browser link to check the uncertain-action rules.
  • New tests use no mocks: the real host with contract-faithful fakes only for the model provider and the browser.

Not run for this head: the Electron journeys (chat-queue-versions, app093-image-generation-persistence). CI runs them.

CI status

At 3d2077b, Typecheck (core and Pro) and both Native recording jobs fail because CI checks out shared at main, which does not yet have shared #47's exports. Merging shared #47 fixes this; the failed jobs then need a rerun. CodeQL also reports a failure on this head.

Evidence

Synthetic demo data from the Electron e2e. Each image was checked against its caption.

Give extensionChatRequest its own doc comment.

The new key sits between the vault hook's JSDoc block and extensionVaultRequest. Editors will now show the vault description on extensionChatRequest. The extensionVaultRequest key loses its description. Add a separate doc comment for the chat hook above its key, and keep the vault comment directly above extensionVaultRequest.

Filter the runtime log before you parse each line.

Lines 160-166 do not filter out empty lines. The other two events() helpers in this file do filter them. The log is written only by appends, so a blank line here is unlikely. Add .filter(Boolean) for consistency, or reuse a shared helper.

Use ControlOrMeta+Enter instead of choosing the modifier by platform.

Playwright maps ControlOrMeta to Meta on macOS and to Control on other platforms. The manual process.platform check repeats that mapping. The same pattern probably appears in the earlier Send Now test in this file.

Proposed change
       if (sendNow)
- await submit(
- 'Send this ahead of the queue.',
-          process.platform === 'darwin' ? 'Meta+Enter' : 'Control+Enter'
- )
+ await submit('Send this ahead of the queue.', 'ControlOrMeta+Enter')

Based on learnings: "In Playwright tests, use the ControlOrMeta modifier key for keyboard shortcuts ... instead of manually detecting the platform and choosing Control vs Meta/Command."

Update the `submit` call in the Send Now test to use Playwright’s

…ache

Tool schemas render in the system message, ahead of the history. Re-ranking
them per message changed that prefix, so llama-server re-read the whole
conversation every turn (~10s for 4K tokens on an M5) instead of reusing its
cache (~0.3s). Tools offered earlier now stay in order and new picks follow.
Qwen3.5 and Bonsai 2 cannot roll recurrent state back past a saved
checkpoint. At llama.cpp's 8192-token default, an edit earlier in a shorter
conversation re-read the whole prompt. Both bundled engines (b11532 and
prism-b10754) accept --checkpoint-min-step; full-attention models ignore it.
A 1920px screenshot is ~2,300 image tokens and took 11-16s to read on an M5;
1440px stays above the 1024 image tokens Qwen-VL grounding needs at about
half the reading time. Saved choices are unchanged.
One slim row detects the GPU (Metal, CUDA or Vulkan, through llama.cpp's own
device probe), CPU and memory, then sets every modality: each backend, the
chat engine (GPU layers, flash attention, MTP when the model has heads, the
lightest KV cache that fits, a 16K context), which engines stay in memory and
the screenshot size. DFlash stays opt-in because it rejects image requests
while a vision projector is loaded. The row appears only while settings
differ from the plan and slides away after applying. A manual change to a
speed setting ends automatic management.
A fresh install (no saved model settings) is managed automatically: startup,
Configure for me, activating another chat model and installing the CUDA pack
re-apply the fastest plan when the hardware or model changed. CUDA counts only
when its engine finds a device, so machines without the NVIDIA driver get
Vulkan or CPU settings. Installs that saved their own settings keep them.
Add conversations.search over the sealed bridge. Hits are summaries with a
snippet and turn count, so a large chat cannot inflate the response. Search
reuses Desktop's escaped FTS query and title match, and conversations.list
gains cursor paging. Both stay Pro only.
The browser decided which thinking budgets fit, which speculative modes and
draft models apply, which models fit each task role, and whether the active
model can see images or run Agent mode. Those rules now live in
src/shared, and both Desktop's Settings and Models screens and the bridge
use them. settings.get returns the options and the active model's vision
and Agent support with a reason, and settings.set corrects a value that no
longer fits and returns the saved settings. Point Pro at the vault kinds,
chat search and shared role filters.
Pin the Kev 4B checkpoint to the Hugging Face v1.0 tag (591dcb5b) with
its sizes and SHA-256 digests. The bundled Kev runtime loads it as is.

The checkpoint now lives in kev-4b/checkpoint-v1.0/. Install state is
"file present", and the new adapter has the same size as the old one,
so the old path would keep pre-1.0 weights on existing installs. The
pre-catalog checkpoint can no longer satisfy the catalog; the
pre-catalog Qwen base is still reused, so an upgrade downloads only the
~135 MB checkpoint. A completed Kev download removes the stale managed
kev-4b/checkpoint folder.
Model lookups now search the download folder first, then the folders the user added, through one resolver (model-paths.ts) that refuses traversal and links outside a root. Deleting a model whose files live in another folder is refused, so files outside the download folder are kept.
Mapping a large model from a USB drive can print nothing for several minutes. Every engine now waits ten minutes of silence, any progress line restarts the wait, and the startup notice waits fifteen minutes.
imatrix and mmproj files are not runnable choices. Unknown precision is no longer ranked as the smallest download.
The browser reached models, settings and audio over the plain HTTP gateway.
For a LAN or Tailscale Desktop that sent voice recordings and settings
unencrypted, and saving settings was refused. The bridge now offers
models.inventory, models.activate, audio.voices, audio.transcribe and
audio.speak. They call the same core functions as the HTTP routes, need a
paired Pro browser, and refuse audio or text over the sealed size limit
instead of cutting it. The HTTP gateway is unchanged for other clients.
The journey creates a vault with synthetic data, adds a login with a TOTP
secret, two websites, a folder and favorite, a card, an address and a
note, checks the filters, masking and live code, and captures light, dark
and narrow screenshots.
The browser capped page text with its own context guess and wrote the Title
and URL lines itself, and Desktop cut it again to 8,000 characters.
chat.start now accepts page { title, url, text }; Desktop builds the fenced
block, escapes all three fields, and gives the page a quarter of the
model's context, between 4,000 and 60,000 characters. pageText still works
for older browsers.
The extension reports uncertain when the page did not answer an action.
Desktop no longer repeats that action. It takes a fresh snapshot, tells the
next decision the action may have run, and asks the user after two
uncertain input actions in a row. The old 'The page did not answer.' error
from earlier extensions maps to the same path.
The Native recording job checked out shared main, so a PR that changes Desktop and shared together failed on the missing shared export. Use the same branch, base branch, main order as the ci job.
The extension validates the page it sends with the same parser. The file is
shared verbatim, so the export lives in both copies.
…ient branch

One OGAD PR for this work. #182 began as a port of #184's 2026-10-11 work, so
where both changed the same file, #182's reviewed form is kept and #184's later
changes are carried onto it:

- Model storage: #182's design (deferred, verified cleanup; references resolved
across all read folders). #184's storage checks before embeddings and speech
load are not kept, because they broke memory search when the folder was missing.
- Kev 1.0 checkpoint: the old checkpoint-reuse branch is removed.
- Tool selection: #184's sticky tool set moves into chat-tool-selection.
- Web Use: #184's step history, guidance memory, stall nudge, planning from the
open page and debugger fallback session are kept beside #182's uncertain-action
handling. The whole-task retry after a debugger drop is removed, because the
  fallback session now handles that.
- Chat: the compaction summary moves into src/shared/chat-history. Send and
delete for a queued message use #182's queue store.
- Pro: merged desktop-pro #96 into #95.
The native fixture drives the real task loop with a synthetic model server and
browser link: an unconfirmed click is never sent again, also from an older
extension, and two in a row wait for the user. The mock-based loop test is
replaced by this and by pure tests of the timeout and action-key rules.
The browser takes its voice settings only from Desktop, so the Voice section now
carries the Voice tab's playback speed. One rule bounds it for both.
The branch point check moves to a helper; the browser's copy is identical.
One pass let a nested tag such as <scr<b>ipt> rebuild a tag (CodeQL
js/incomplete-multi-character-sanitization). The snippet is shown as text in
the browser, but no tag should survive the cleanup.
