Opt-in, default-off, anonymous usage data and crash reports for Off Grid AI Desktop, sent to PostHog Cloud EU. The spec is docs/ANALYTICS.md (kept identical with OGAM). Pro side: https://github.com/off-grid-ai/desktop-pro/pull/122 (the pro pointer in this PR points at it).

What changes

  • One owner in main (src/main/analytics): consent, anonymous ID, PostHog client, scrubbed crashes, unclean-exit marker, flows. Nothing else imports PostHog.
  • Consent: an unticked checkbox on the last setup step, Settings > Analytics (two toggles, What we share, Report a problem), a prompt after a failure (at most once in 30 days), and a one-time prompt for people who set up before this version.
  • Events at owning seams: downloads, model loads, generations (via the AI request log), llama-server crashes, tools, documents, chats, projects, browser actions, Pro purchase, extension requests, renderer screens and actions.
  • Report a problem: shows the diagnostic log, copy, reveal, and a mailto to support. Works with analytics off.
  • Diagnostic log keeps metadata only: model replies, page guards, verdict text and typed task goals no longer reach it.
  • Copy: "Your chats and files never leave your device. Anonymous usage data and crash reports only if you turn them on."

Rules held

  • No PostHog client exists until opt-in, and never in an unpackaged build. Before opt-in: zero requests.
  • Opt-out shuts the client down, drops the queue (a send gate answers locally) and resets the install ID.
  • Never identify; $process_person_profile: false; GeoIP off.
  • Nothing from the never-send list. Crash messages: paths become the code file name or <file>; home folder and account name are removed.
  • Consent is a local setting: it never syncs and is not in backups. Delete all data forgets it and the ID.
  • Renderer CSP unchanged (src/shared/renderer-csp.ts); the renderer reports only through IPC, and main validates each event and property.

Accepted deviations from the spec

No battery props on desktop; network = unknown; soc = CPU arch; chat/project counted at IPC handlers; feature_used throttled to once per 10 min per feature; voice/image setup funnels start at download; no trial_started; Pro gate feature = screen route name.

Review fixes in this pass

  • feature_used throttle moved into the service: tools, browser, clipboard, meetings and sync were not throttled.
  • Crash scrub: /Users/alice/Documents/plan.pdf used to send plan.pdf; now <file>. Home folder and account name dropped (paths with spaces leaked a user name). Spec line clarified.
  • Diagnostic log: browser and app-control tasks logged the user's typed goal and start URL; now length only.
  • capture:self-view rejected on every screen change in a free build (Pro-only handler); it now never rejects, so it is not a crash report each screen change.

Screenshots (light mode)

Every changed .tsx was checked. Visible changes are below. No visible change: App.tsx, ConnectorsScreen.tsx, MemoryChat, RemoteVisionSettingsTab.tsx, useQuickConnection.ts, main.tsx, Pro DevicesScreen.tsx (analytics calls only).

Not captured: the Pro MeetingsScreen header and VoiceScreen dictate hero (desktop-pro#122). They render only with an active Pro license, and this Mac's test profiles are free. The change is one sentence each: "Nothing leaves this device" → "Your recordings never leave this device" / "Your audio never leaves this machine".

Review round 2 (CodeRabbit)

  • Fixed: document_added sends only an extension the app opens (else other); problem_reported counts once; message_sent counts after the send is accepted; connector funnel ends on every cancel; Legal line scoped to local models; three marketing lines; spec split for Report a problem on OGAD/OGAM.
  • Not changed: the unhandledRejection listener (Electron main runs in warn mode, tested). Deferred: main-side catalog allowlist (docs/GAPS_BACKLOG.md).

Verified

  • Live, packaged macOS build, fresh profile. A hook on the main-process fetch recorded every request body to PostHog; lsof watched connections.
    • Setup unticked → model download → chat: 0 requests, 0 connections to eu.i.posthog.com.
    • Toggle on in Settings: analytics_opted_in (source settings), screen_viewed, message_sent (has_image, has_document, tools_enabled only), generation_finished (model: custom, engine: llama.cpp, backend: gpu, outcome: stopped, timings). No prompt text, reply text, path or file name in any body (checked with marker strings).
    • Opt out: no request after opt-out; queued events dropped.
    • Failure prompt → Share: analytics_opted_in (source failure_prompt) with a new install ID (ID reset proven).
    • Relaunch with consent on: app_opened, screen_viewed, app_backgrounded.
    • Report a problem: log shows; no chat content in it (marker strings absent).
  • Typecheck core + pro: pass. Lint on changed files: 0 errors. depcruise: 0 errors.
  • Analytics tests: 40/40. analytics-opt-in.integration.dbtest.ts + data-privacy-delete-all.dbtest.ts: 7/7. CSP test (artifact-preview.test.ts): pass.
  • Full product-integration suite: 92 failures in 19 files; the same 92 tests fail on origin/main (diffed by name). Native SQLite ABI / gateway 503s.

Not verified

  • The last fixes (quit waits up to 5 s for a send in flight; crash scrubber input bound, quote cuts, multi-line quotes) were verified by unit tests and a raw send of the app's client code to PostHog EU (HTTP 200), not by a packaged-app run.
  • Windows: no Windows VM mirror is set up on this Mac, so Windows is not verified.
  • The capture:self-view fix was not re-run live: the re-signed test build stopped on a macOS Keychain prompt, which I did not approve.
  • model_download_*, model_loaded, unclean_exit, llama_server_crashed, problem_reported were not captured live (covered by tests).
  • A catalog model's non-default file (Qwen 3.5 0.8B IQ2_XXS) reports model: custom on generation: safe, but less useful. Follow-up.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added optional anonymous usage analytics and crash reporting, with consent choices during setup and in the app.
    • Added Analytics settings to manage consent, review what is shared, and access problem-reporting tools.
    • Added options to view, copy, or email diagnostic logs.
  • Privacy
    • Clarified that analytics are off by default and that prompts, replies, file names, paths, URLs, and search terms are not sent.
    • Updated privacy descriptions to distinguish on-device chats and files from optional anonymous reporting.
  • Documentation
    • Added details on analytics consent, collected data, and privacy practices.

Opted-in analytics can still transmit an unapproved flow detail or private text from a multiline crash message; both are narrow but should receive follow-up.

Enforce flow allowlists in main without importing renderer catalogs.

stepFlow accepts any value that matches CATALOG_OR_CUSTOM, then forwards it unchanged. This can send a user-provided connector name if a renderer flow report supplies that value. The shipped renderer currently sends custom, but main does not enforce the documented contract.

The proposed isKnownProFeature and isCatalogConnector calls are not defined in AnalyticsServiceDeps. The catalogs are renderer-owned, and proCatalog.ts imports React and renderer-only modules. Create a small shared, data-only source for connector IDs and Pro routes, and use it from both the renderer catalogs and main. For connector_add, preserve known IDs and map unknown values to custom. For pro_upgrade, preserve known routes and omit unknown feature values rather than assuming custom is a valid Pro route.

Update `stepFlow` to validate `connector_add` and `pro_upgrade` details against
shared, data-only connector-ID and Pro-route allowlists used by both renderer
catalogs and main. Preserve known values, map unknown connector IDs to `custom`,
and omit unknown Pro routes from `feature`; do not import renderer-only catalogs

Deferred. The renderer is our own code and sends custom for a typed connector; main already limits the detail to the catalog-id shape. A main-side allowlist needs a new shared data module for connector ids and Pro routes, which is its own change. Kept as a follow-up.

@alichherawalla Understood. The main-side allowlist remains deferred, not fixed. The current format check does not enforce catalog membership, but your renderer behavior addresses the current typed-connector path.

Would you like me to open a GitHub issue for the shared allowlists follow-up?

No issue needed: the follow-up is tracked in docs/GAPS_BACKLOG.md (2026-10-23: Analytics flow details checked against a shared allowlist in main). This thread stays open for a human reviewer.

- Around line 95-103: Update the quote-truncation logic in the scrub function to
calculate all unmatched-quote cut points from the same initially truncated
value, then slice once at the earliest cut point. This prevents one quote check
from changing the input used by subsequent checks and preserves the existing
behavior for balanced quotes.

🟡 Minor · Make QUOTED match newlines. · scrub.ts:101-119

src/main/analytics/scrub.ts:101-119
🔒 Security & Privacy | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Make QUOTED match newlines.

A crash message such as "secret\nstill secret" is not redacted because QUOTED excludes \n. Whitespace normalization changes the newline to a space, but the private text remains in the $exception value sent by captureException.

Suggested fix
-const QUOTED = /"[^"\n]*"|'[^'\n]*'|`[^`\n]*`|“[^”\n]*”|‘[^’\n]*’/g
+const QUOTED = /"[^"]*"|'[^']*'|`[^`]*`|“[^”]*”|‘[^’]*’/g

This is separate from the earlier over-2,000-character truncation issue. Balanced multiline quotes bypass bounded and do not require truncation.

Review comment at @src/main/analytics/scrub.ts around lines 101 - 119:
Update the QUOTED pattern used by scrubText to match balanced quoted text across
newline characters by removing newline exclusions from its quoted-content
character classes. Preserve support for the existing straight and curly quote
types.
