feat: add self-service account deletion with preserved shared history - #787
Adds Delete account to the account page, following the issue discussion's anonymization approach. After explicit confirmation, the account becomes “Deleted user”, credentials and sessions are removed, and shared expenses, notes, receipts, memberships, and exact balances remain available to other members. The original email can be used for a new, separate account.
Owned groups transfer to a random non-deleted member, including archived groups. Groups without an eligible successor retain their tombstone owner. Recurring schedules created by the deleted account stop. Local bank credentials/cache and push subscriptions are removed; unshared uploaded avatars and thumbnails are cleaned up. Deleted identities cannot authenticate or update their profile.
Includes a nullable User.deletedAt migration. Provider-side bank consent and personal information embedded in shared content remain outside this change; the confirmation describes retained shared content. There is no administrator deletion interface or conditional hard deletion.
AI assistance: Codex implemented the feature, tests, and implementation plan, and performed a code self-review. Human review is pending.
Validation
All commands ran in the repository's Nix runtime in .worktrees/issue-206:
pnpm prettier --check .
pnpm lint
pnpm tsc --noEmit
pnpm test --runInBand — 37 suites, 445 tests passed
pnpm test:integration --runInBand — all 5 suites passed; after adding avatar coverage, the account-deletion suite passed all 9 tests
pnpm test:e2e tests/e2e/delete-account.spec.ts --project=chromium --workers=1 — both tests passed, including cancellation, sign-out/cookie cleanup, revoked sessions, and another member's history view
pnpm build — passed
Database tests used separate local disposable _test databases on ports 55207 and 55208. Integration coverage includes preserved accounting, cleanup, ownership edge cases, rollback, idempotence, registration email reuse, and recurring schedules.
Demo
Account → Delete account → confirmation explaining retained history → Permanently delete account → sign-in page. Chromium tests exercise this flow and verify “Deleted user” in another member's expense details.

New Features
Added an account deletion option with a confirmation step. After deletion, you’re signed out and returned to the sign-in page.
Deletion anonymizes your account while preserving shared expense history, balances, and notes. Group ownership may transfer to another active member.
Deleted accounts can no longer sign in or use existing sessions. Their names are displayed using a localized “Deleted user” label.
Bug Fixes
Prevented duplicate deletion requests and dialog dismissal while deletion is in progress. Failed attempts show an error and can be retried.

Walkthrough
The change adds self-service account deletion. It marks users as deleted, removes selected account data, preserves shared financial history, blocks deleted accounts from authentication and protected procedures, and adds a confirmation flow on the account page.

Adds the nullable User.deletedAt field and a protected deletion mutation. The service anonymizes the user, removes associated account records, transfers group ownership when an active member is available, and stops recurrences created by the user. It retains shared accounting history, checks avatar references before file removal, and retries selected transaction failures. Integration tests cover cleanup, retention, ownership, recurrences, rollback, and repeated or concurrent deletion.
Protected procedures, session lookup, and sign-in checks reject deleted users. Profile updates match only users whose deletedAt is null. Integration coverage checks access after deletion.
Adds a translated confirmation dialog with duplicate-submission and pending-state handling. On successful deletion, the client signs out, attempts API-cache cleanup, and navigates to sign-in. Component and browser tests cover cancellation, failures, pending requests, cache outcomes, and retained history.
Deleted-user labels in retained records src/utils/strings.ts, src/components/AddExpense/*, src/components/Friend/FriendBalance.tsx, src/components/group/*, src/components/ui/avatar.tsx, src/server/api/routers/expense.ts, src/tests/displayName.test.ts, src/tests/helpers/user.ts, src/tests/addStore.test.ts, src/tests/splitDescription.test.ts, src/pages/add.tsx, src/pages/balances/[friendId].tsx
Uses localized display names for deleted users in participant, friend, balance, and avatar views. Expense queries include deletedAt; client participant objects and test fixtures set it to null.

After a group member deletes their account, new group expenses can still assign that member a share, creating balances that nobody can settle. Fix this before merging. The identical avatars for deleted users and the weak concurrency test are smaller issues that can be handled alongside it.

Explanation
The description follows the required structure and covers the implementation, scope, validation results, demo flow, and checklist. It clearly states that human review of AI-generated code is still pending, but the description is otherwise complete.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
[#206] asks for a way to delete a user account that no longer uses the service. The reviewed head adds a Delete account action on the account page (DeleteAccount component, rendered in src/pages/account.tsx) and a protected userRouter.deleteAccount mutation. The deleteAccount service (src/server/api/services/deleteAccount.ts) runs in one Serializable transaction. It anonymizes the user as 'Deleted user' and clears email, image, bank identifiers, and preferences. It deletes accounts, sessions, verification tokens, cached bank data, push notifications, and friend default splits. It transfers owned groups, including archived groups, to a random non-deleted member, and keeps the tombstone owner when no eligible member exists. It stops only recurrences whose template expense was added by the deleted user. Shared expenses and balances remain. protectedProcedure and the auth adapter reject deleted users. Tests cover these paths: unit tests for DeleteAccount, integration tests for deleteAccount, and Chromium e2e tests in tests/e2e/delete-account.spec.ts. The issue text also names administrator-forced deletion ('force as admin or delete own account'). The PR excludes that path, and the issue wording allows either option, so the self-service path satisfies the stated request. This reading is an interpretation of the issue text; the issue discussion was not supplied.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changed files support [#206]. The prisma migration and schema add nullable User.deletedAt, which the tombstone and auth checks use. The deleteAccount service and deleteAccountAvatar service implement the cleanup described by the issue. deleteAccountAvatar removes only unshared avatars and thumbnails after the transaction. The trpc.ts, auth.ts, and user.ts changes enforce that deleted identities cannot authenticate or update profiles. The displayName changes (src/utils/strings.ts), EntityAvatar, FriendBalance, AddMembers, GroupMyBalance, SelectUserOrGroup, UserInput, and the expense.ts select fields render 'Deleted user' for retained shared history. The added deletedAt: null fields in fixtures and placeholder objects keep typed data consistent with the new column. Locale strings support the confirmation and the deleted-user label. No change was found that lacks a connection to account deletion or to the display of retained history. The migration timestamp (20261101120000) is later than typical current dates; this affects only ordering and was not assessed further.

Exclude deleted members from new group splits.
When a group member deletes their account, this selection still adds that member to every new group expense. The default equal split assigns the deleted account a share, creating a new balance for an account that cannot authenticate. The /add?groupId path also initializes participants from all group members. Filter deleted members from new expenses in both paths, while retaining them when editing historical expenses. Exercise overlapping transactions in the simultaneous-deletion test.
Both calls use db, whose pool has connection_limit=1. The adapter applies that limit as the pool maximum, so the transactions run one at a time. This test can pass without exercising concurrent deletion or its retry path. Use a test client with at least two connections, then verify that both overlapping deletion requests complete.
