fix: optionally exclude future expenses from balances - #793
Future-dated expenses currently change balances immediately. Add opt-in EXCLUDE_FUTURE_EXPENSES=true to exclude them from every displayed balance until their date arrives in the browser's time zone. The default remains unchanged.
The existing balance view accepts optional transaction-local start (inclusive) and end (exclusive) bounds, preserving Prisma filters, aggregations, and relation includes without duplicating the view. Null or missing bounds disable that side of the filter. Current screens continue using only the end-of-day cutoff; optional start-date support is included for future reuse. All balance-view changes are consolidated into one Prisma migration. Browser time zones handle daylight-saving transitions and legacy IANA aliases. Checks for deleting friends, leaving groups, archiving, and deleting groups still account for future debts.
Future expenses remain clickable, appear gray with an explanation, and become current automatically at local midnight. The opt-in default and the policy for keeping agent notes in a Git-ignored directory were both explicitly requested for this PR.
Friend balance responses simplify each complete group before selecting user/friend pairs, so newly created pairs match the group view even when no direct current expense exists. Each group is simplified once, and these friend entries can be opened without a direct expense.
Validation: formatting, full lint, TypeScript, 476 unit/component tests, 51 PostgreSQL integration tests, Chromium regression with the flag both enabled and disabled, and production build all passed. Tests cover cutoff isolation and cleanup, DST, date edits, recurring templates, simplified debts, and midnight/tab-resume refreshes.
AI assistance: Codex implemented, reviewed, and tested these changes. Human review is pending.
Demo
Chromium regression verifies matching group and friend balances, gray future rows that remain clickable, and unchanged presentation with the flag disabled.

New Features
Added an optional setting, off by default, to exclude future-dated expenses from displayed balances. When enabled, future expenses remain visible and clickable in expense lists, but are dimmed and labeled as not yet included in balances.
The cutoff follows the browser’s local time zone. Balances update when the local date changes, including when returning to an inactive tab.
Future expenses remain visible in friend and group views, with upcoming expenses marked in the list.

Walkthrough
The change adds optional exclusion of future-dated expenses from balances. It calculates cutoffs using the browser’s time zone, applies them to balance queries, and marks future expenses in lists. It also adds guidance for storing agent notes in an ignored directory.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
[#604] requires balances to remain unchanged until the expense date. The PR adds cutoff filtering, browser time-zone handling, midnight refresh, future-expense presentation, balance protection, friend/group handling, and automated tests. However, EXCLUDE_FUTURE_EXPENSES defaults to false, so the default configuration still changes balances immediately for future expenses. The PR description does not change the directly linked issue requirement.
Resolution
Make future-expense exclusion the default for #604, with an explicit opt-out if required. Alternatively, obtain explicit maintainer confirmation on #604 that opt-in behavior satisfies the issue and record that requirement change before merge.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The balance cutoff, time-zone handling, balance middleware, future-expense UI, friend/group balance changes, and related tests support [#604]. The new Agent Documentation section in AGENTS.md and the .agent-notes/ entry in .gitignore only define Git-ignored agent-note handling. They do not implement or test the linked issue.
Resolution
Remove the agent-note policy from AGENTS.md and remove .agent-notes/ from .gitignore in this pull request. Submit that policy in a separate change with its own requirement.

Include simplified balances without a direct raw pair.
With the cutoff enabled, a future expense may be the only raw A–C pair. If current expenses have A paying B and B paying C, simplification creates an A–C debt, but this loop never returns it. The group balance shows the debt while friend balances omit it. Build the result from the simplified group balances, including newly created pairs. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Description
Future-dated expenses currently change balances immediately. Add opt-in
EXCLUDE_FUTURE_EXPENSES=trueto exclude them from every displayed balance until their date arrives in the browser's time zone.
