Handle zero-mass boundaries in the categorical distribution - #484
With the weights in #459, inverse_cdf(0.5) returned index 3, which has zero mass. It now returns index 1. Sampling handles ties separately so an exact draw of zero also skips leading zero-weight categories.
Both regression tests failed on main and passed with the fix. The default test suite, formatting and Clippy passed on Windows with Rust 1.99.1. The minimum Rust version and other platforms are untested locally.
locate returns the first cumulative probability greater than or equal to the input. The documentation specifies the inclusive boundary rule. Tests cover repeated boundaries, zero-mass categories, integer-valued masses, and invalid inputs.
The usize sampler selects the first cumulative probability greater than the random draw. Tests check exact and nearby boundaries across sample types, plus seeded draws away from boundaries.
The boundary-search changes have no established merge-blocking issue. Infinite weights remain a pre-existing limitation that can be addressed separately.

Explanation
The title "Handle zero-mass boundaries in the categorical distribution" matches the main change. The raw summary says Categorical::locate now uses a partition-point lower bound, the usize sampler uses a strict upper-bound search that skips repeated boundaries from zero-mass categories, and the inverse-CDF docs now state the inclusive boundary rule. The PR objectives confirm the fix targets inverse_cdf returning zero-mass categories at CDF ties, which the title names. The title is specific and concise, and it does not cover the interior-tie and documentation details, which is acceptable.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
[#459] The issue requires quantile results that match inf{x | F(x) >= p} for interior ties. At the reviewed head, Categorical::locate uses partition_point(|v| v < x), which returns the first index with norm_cdf[i] >= x. norm_cdf is non-decreasing, because it is a running sum of non-negative masses divided by one positive total, so the predicate is monotone. The issue's interior-tie example ([0.25, 0.5, 0.5, 0.5, 1.0], p = 0.5) now returns 1. test_inverse_cdf_zero_mass_boundaries and test_inverse_cdf_integer_mass_oracle check this behavior at exact and adjacent cumulative boundaries for many integer mass vectors. For p in (0, 1), the boundary reproducers also return the first positive-mass index. For p = 0.0 and p = 1.0, inverse_cdf still panics, as the documented contract states. The issue describes this rejection as routing around the boundary cases, so it does not produce a wrong index. The issue also names try_inverse_cdf. Categorical does not implement try_inverse_cdf at the base or at the reviewed head. The DiscreteCDF trait does not define it either, so no existing try path is changed or required by this PR. The PR changes only inverse_cdf and the sampler, and the sampler change is in scope (see the other assessment).
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
All changes are in src/distribution/categorical.rs and connect to #459. (1) locate now uses a partition_point lower bound. This is the direct fix for interior and boundary ties in inverse_cdf. (2) The usize Distribution sampler now uses partition_point(|v| v <= draw), which selects the first index with F(i) > draw. Before this change, the sampler shared locate and could return a zero-mass category on an exact tie. Because #459 concerns zero-probability events, this change matches the issue. The sampler's u64 and f64 impls delegate to the usize impl, so they stay consistent. (3) The inverse_cdf doc comment changes from x < f(i) to x <= f(i). This matches the new lower-bound behavior. (4) The added tests cover inverse_cdf boundaries, integer mass vectors, sampler boundary draws, a seeded sampler check, and invalid inverse_cdf inputs. These support the changed behavior. No public declarations change, and no unrelated files are touched. The new should_panic tests for NaN rely on the existing unwrap in the comparison closure, not an explicit NaN check. This is a test-coverage detail and does not affect scope.

Docstring coverage is 20.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 5 functions across 1 files.

Prevent infinite weights from producing a NaN CDF.
Categorical::new(&[1.0, f64::INFINITY]) succeeds but stores a NaN in norm_cdf. Sampling or calling inverse_cdf(0.5) then panics. Reject infinite weights during construction, or define a valid normalization for them.
