Summary

Replace ESLint with Oxlint, native TypeScript 7 checking, strict Svelte checking, and direct template policies. Preserve all ten custom guards in TypeScript, component scripts, and inline handlers while updating the plugin dependencies.

Changes

  • Share the original selectors and messages between Oxlint and the compiler-AST checker.
  • Resolve bindings across module, instance, and template scopes, including function-scoped var; check string timers only on globals, and restrict duplicate-condition checks to stable expressions.
  • Remove ESLint, its parsers and plugins, and Svelte preprocessing from the production build.
  • Require Svelte runes mode in verification and production and reject legacy store and named dispatcher imports in component code. Retire the documented CSS and refactoring heuristics.
  • Run all checks through pnpm run build-with-lint and remove the duplicate Svelte CI step.

Rule audit and follow-up refinements documents the coverage limits, store-ban review, checker typing and simplification, upstream adoption, compatibility-package removal, and final timing measurement. Those refinements are deferred from this migration.

Testing / validation

  • Frozen pnpm install and production build with lint passed; Svelte reported zero errors and warnings.
  • Full unit suite: 7,018 passed, 28 skipped, including 149 tooling tests that exercise both forbidden and valid examples.
  • Obsidian 1.13.7 in an isolated vault: five settings/capture checks passed and no runtime errors were captured. The instance was stopped afterward.
  • Production bundle matches the previously verified native/Oxlint candidate. Release metadata is unchanged.

Release impact: build(deps) requests a patch release under the repository's pinned policy. No settings or vault-data migration is required. Version changes and publication remain with the release-bot workflow; the bot's release PR requires the maintainer's merge. Oxlint's JavaScript plugin API is alpha and its version is pinned.

Checklist

  • PR title follows Conventional Commits.
  • Related issues assessed; this migration has no linked issue.
  • Release and contributor-tooling migration impact documented.

Note

Replace ESLint with native Oxlint and Svelte policy tooling

  • Removes the ESLint stack and svelte-preprocess; pnpm run lint now runs Oxlint (with type-aware rules), a custom Svelte policy checker, and strict svelte-check --tsgo --fail-on-warnings
  • Adds the quickadd Oxlint plugin (tooling/oxlint-plugin.mjs) with restricted-syntax, svelte-runes, and svelte-debug rules
  • Adds a component policy checker (tooling/svelte-policy.mjs) that enforces raw-HTML, keyed-each, console, dynamic-code, and other Svelte template rules, plus unused svelte-ignore reporting
  • Enables Svelte runes mode in svelte.config.mjs and svelteCompilerOptions.mjs, with a test asserting legacy $: statements fail compilation
  • Behavioral Change: lint failures now come from Oxlint and the policy checker, not ESLint; production builds compile Svelte in runes mode and reject legacy reactive statements; fresh installs may resolve newer chrono-node and fuse.js versions

Walkthrough

The repository replaces ESLint with Oxlint and a Svelte AST policy checker. It updates lint scripts, Svelte compiler settings, tests, CI configuration, and developer documentation.

Changes

Lint and Svelte tooling migration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Update Svelte compiler settings
svelte.config.mjs, svelteCompilerOptions.mjs, esbuild.config.mjs, tests/svelteCompilerOptions.test.ts, src/gui/choiceList/ChoiceView.svelte
Svelte compiler settings enable runes mode. The build and compiler tests no longer use svelte-preprocess. Two Svelte error parameters are explicitly typed as unknown.
Configure Oxlint rules and plugin
.oxlintrc.json, .oxlintrc.syntax.json, tooling/oxlint-plugin.mjs, eslint.config.mjs, package.json
Oxlint configuration and a local plugin define TypeScript and Svelte-related lint rules. The package removes ESLint and its integrations and adds Oxlint tooling dependencies.
Implement and validate Svelte policies
tooling/svelte-policy.mjs, tests/tooling/sveltePolicy.test.ts
The checker parses Svelte components and returns location-aware diagnostics. Tests cover policy rules, Oxlint integration, and strict compiler checks.
Wire checks into scripts and guidance
package.json, .github/workflows/ci.yml, AGENTS.md, CONTRIBUTING.md, tooling/README.md, .gitignore, tsconfig.json, tests/examples/captureInboxGps.test.ts
Lint scripts run Oxlint, Svelte policy checks, and strict Svelte checks. CI and documentation describe the commands. Configuration excludes .svelte-check, and a test fixture accepts folder-shaped entries.

I’m a rabbit with rules to inspect,
I hop through the checks, line by line.
Oxlint now joins the Svelte AST,
And runes set the compiler’s design.
Tests keep the new pathways in view,
While I nibble a leaf at the end.

Set runes: true in the production compiler options.

svelteCompilerOptions.mjs is passed to esbuild-svelte for production builds. The shared Svelte configuration and policy checker require runes mode, but the production options do not declare it. Add the option so both compiler paths use the same explicit mode.

….ts files (#2225)

* test: cover check without native TypeScript and svelte/internal in .ts

Both tests fail on master. svelte-check --tsgo exits 0 with zero diagnostics when the native TypeScript executable cannot start, and Oxlint applies the svelte/internal guard only to .svelte.ts files.

* fix(build): run svelte-check on the TypeScript 6 path

svelte-check 4.7.6 under --tsgo ignores the native compiler's exit status, so pnpm run check and pnpm run lint passed a component type error when the native executable could not start. The TypeScript 6 path reports it. tsc keeps the native compiler, which fails on a type error and on a missing executable.

* build: drop the .svelte-check ignores

Only svelte-check --tsgo and --incremental write .svelte-check, and check uses neither. TypeScript's ** pattern already skips dot-directories, and Oxlint lints only src and tests.

* fix(lint): apply the svelte/internal guard to all TypeScript files

ESLint's svelte/no-svelte-internal covered every linted .ts file. The Oxlint port enabled the selector only through quickadd/svelte-runes on .svelte.ts files. It is now its own rule on **/*.ts, and svelte-runes keeps only the store and dispatcher guards.

* test: skip the native-compiler check test before Node 22.15 and compare basenames

The preload uses module.registerHooks, which Node 22.15 added, and package.json allows Node 22.12. Oxlint prints file:// URLs in JetBrains terminals, so the guard assertions compare file basenames.

* build: keep ignoring .svelte-check overlays

svelte-check --tsgo and --incremental leave the directory behind, and checkouts that ran check after #2224 already have one.

* test: run both svelte-check gate tests through one workspace helper

The strict-check test moves next to the native-compiler test. Both read the check command from package.json in one place, and the preload extends NODE_OPTIONS instead of replacing it.

* ci: drop the duplicate check from release verification

pnpm run lint already ends with pnpm run check.

* test: assert the check script runs svelte-check and fails in one helper

Also label the .gitignore entry and restore the README condition that svelte-check must run on the native compiler's API before the TypeScript 6 package can go.
chhoumann added a commit that referenced this pull request Oct 13, 2026
* build(deps-dev): add svelte-policy from a packed tarball

The package is not on npm yet. The vendored tarball is packed from
chhoumann/svelte-policy at d10fa59 and is replaced by the published
^0.1.0 before this branch merges.

* chore(lint): check Svelte components with svelte-policy

Replace the tooling/ component checker and oxlint plugin with the shared
svelte-policy package. svelte-policy.json holds the ten restricted
selectors and messages, turns on no-svelte-store and runes-only, and
keeps the logger message for no-console. Oxlint loads the package's
plugin under the quickadd prefix, with each rule on the same file globs
and severities as before.

Every message is unchanged. These rule ids change:

- Component checker: svelte/store imports report no-svelte-store,
svelte/internal imports report no-svelte-internal, and named
createEventDispatcher imports report runes-only, instead of
  restricted-syntax.
- Oxlint: quickadd(svelte-internal) becomes quickadd(no-svelte-internal).
  quickadd(svelte-runes) becomes quickadd(no-svelte-store) for store
imports and quickadd(runes-only) for dispatcher imports.
  quickadd(svelte-debug) becomes quickadd(no-inspect).

In shared .svelte.ts modules, runes-only also reports $: statements,
which the old plugin did not check.

The policy fixtures from #2224 now live in the package's own tests, so
tests/tooling/sveltePolicy.test.ts keeps only the checks of QuickAdd's
wiring. esquery is no longer a direct dependency.

* build(deps-dev): repack svelte-policy at 32f1402 after verifier fixes
