v0.2.39.0 feat: a test replay opens in the learning-replay composition, with one transport and the Learning summary button (Cycle 0051) - #123
Refs #122 (Cycle 0051, a feature cycle). Plan: the body of #122, approved by /autoplan (O5).
Summary
A saved test replay now opens in the learning-replay composition of the v9 PNG's region 2, as a browser replay already does: the Study pane closes, the Application pane shows the recorded test output above the recorded-source tab, Run and Debug shows the recorded stop, and the Learning summary stands in the chat's place.
Composition and routing (DS-A, DS-F, DS-G): Open replay and a Saved studies choice enter the summary composition; learner entries take a ticket and a turn so the latest one wins; the agent's codebook_playback open of a test replay stays refused (MCP 1.8 unchanged); node-history moves from the Learning summary and the bottom panel are accepted, refused during a browser replay, and late or unknown moves are refused; a failed open gives the Study pane back on Saved studies; leaving the summary composition withdraws the summary's document for both families (9d745e0, found by this ship's review).
The Learning summary of a test replay (DS-B): one reading order (title, result, capture reason, question, summary, sequence diagram, moment, values hint, understanding, events), the selected step marked on the diagram by attribute (no redraw), Step <n> · <label> headings, Show more on the long texts, and a capped diagram height.
One transport for both replay families (DS-C, DS-D, C2): #recording-transport serves both; test replays get Previous and Next event, <t> s / <total> s, keys by event and stop, Home and End by sequence from any page, and their own six shortcut entries; the bottom panel reads Learning replay and shows only the transport.
5A (DS-E): a Learning summary button in the transport's status row shows a hidden summary and keeps the moment, the debugger frame and the reading position, for both families.
Release: 0.2.39.0; the page's new branches stand in helpers so the measured health gate stays at the baseline (5500fba).
Compatibility: MCP API 1.8, the bundled skill and every stored format unchanged.

Tests: 435 test files (the new host file studyWorkspaceTestReplayComposition.test.ts, 31 tests; 47 new Reader DOM cases; "moves with D8" pins converted with reasons).
Coverage: 93% value-weighted (93% including 0 weakly covered paths).
Test value: 0 tests written by the audit, 0 rejected, 0 extended by the audit; 2 tests added or extended with the fix 9d745e0 (red before, green after).
Proposed (carried): a browser Replay from start row and a Pause row in the browser step-control case.
Tests ran: tests 6,696 (6,690 pass, 6 skipped, 0 fail) on the final tree.
Pre-Landing Review
Four review passes (the third pass's record was lost to a detached HEAD and re-run as pass 4 on the same tree). Feature cycle rule (AGENTS.md): non-critical findings are answered Skip and carried to the next cycle; one finding that failed this PR's own acceptance (AC15, AC8 (e): a test replay's departure left the Learning summary's document) was fixed in 9d745e0 with tests that fail without it.
Carried (named in #122's closing comment for the next cycle): fixed-time waits in three host tests; two JSDoc blocks above the wrong functions after the refactor; an unanswered one-replay-at-a-time notice holds the entry turn; Close and Return to Live do not invalidate a waiting entry; a stale-revision Saved studies open can leave an empty summary composition; Open replay with the summary and the bottom panel hidden re-shows no UI; a browser study from a test replay's summary bypasses the editor-area deferral; showLearningSummary's identity changes during an open (STALE_PRESENTATION); every move failure is worded as a debugger failure; forgetUnopenedComposition and a Reload racing another open() can leave or blank the summary; tagTestReplayDrawing binds marks by SVG sibling order; Show more's expanded state persists across replays; nodeHistoryRefusal is not sanitized at publish; untested state cells (browser replay × another study, × failed open); stale comments. Closed with evidence: an older entry's failed open reporting late (a superseded catch returns superseded); the preview retry's revision (intended).
Gate edits: 37 listed, 34 read, 0 findings (all "moves with D8" pin conversions with their reasons, and the package test's expected version).
Outside review (Codex gpt-6-astra): structured review GATE PASS in every pass (P2 only); adversarial challenge completed, NO_FINDINGS in the last pass (pass 2's response was unverified by the parser).
Exploratory QA
Functional surface, repository-native commands, on the final reviewed tree 48c3c846: capture 005 node --test extension/dist/tests/studyWorkspaceTestReplayComposition.test.js (pass) and capture 006 node extension/scripts/study-bootstrap-qa.mjs verify (282 cases, 0 errors, about 25 s, inside the 10-minute reader-dom job). Earlier captures 001 to 004 are superseded. Native pixels, focus and scroll are N51's (after this PR opens).
Design Review
No frontend files changed by the scope detector's patterns (the page script is TypeScript template strings) — design review skipped; the UI is covered by the Reader DOM cases and N51.
Eval Results
No prompt-related files changed — evals skipped.
Scope Drift
Scope Check: CLEAN — every changed file is in #122's Files table, plus the harness and describeNodeTestReplay.ts.
Plan Completion
Tasks 1–9 and 11–14 (composition, summary content, one transport, routing, bottom panel, 5A, pins, README and CHANGELOG, C2 keys, states, exits)
AC13: a recording's load retiring a test replay is pinned by studyWorkspace.test.ts (opening a recording retires a saved Node stop)
Pending after this PR opens: task 10 / AC8 (N51 in VS Code and Cursor), required CI, hosted CodeRabbit approval
Acceptance edits: baseline unavailable (the plan is a GitHub issue body, not tracked in the repository).
Verification Results
Plan checks: P1 Reader DOM timing PASS (about 25 s of a 600 s job); P2 the 15-check exact-tree gate on the final tree: see Test plan; P3 N51: NOT RUN yet (runs on this PR's candidate before the merge, per the plan's delivery order).
TODOS
No TODOS.md (owner rule): carried items go to #122's closing comment and the next cycle's Issue.
Documentation
Scope: committed branch changes since 8dd675b plus staged/unstaged state (working tree clean), checked against the docs roots README.md, extension/README.md, CHANGELOG.md and extension/skills/codebook/SKILL.md. Result: current, no edits. The two later code commits (the studyHtml.ts helper refactor and the open() clearing of the Learning summary on leaving the summary composition) change no documented behavior; extension/README.md says nothing about the summary's content after Return to Live or after leaving a replay, and its Return to Live wording does not contradict the code. Debt: none found.
Test plan
The exact-tree gate of #122 AC9 (15 checks) on the final tree (d2753786, HEAD ac27cc1a):
The first gate run on this branch failed test:package (the release commit missed EXTENSION_VERSION; amended) and health (two page handlers above the measured baseline; fixed by 5500fba, behavior unchanged, 282 Reader DOM cases).
The second run failed one test:package test: the new Reader DOM block's counter was named like a revision of its own (regionTwoRevision = 200), which the package test refuses. 12d8f43 renames it to regionTwoStep (4 lines in the test script). Steps 9 and 11 reviewed tree 48c3c846 (HEAD b32d8eca); for this test-only rename they were not dispatched again (owner direction in AGENTS.md: skip a step that plainly adds nothing); the checks it touches ran again on the final tree.
…A, DS-F, DS-G)
A selected or opening test replay holds the summary composition a browser
replay has: the Study pane closes, the Learning summary stands in the
chat's place, and the bottom panel reads Learning replay. Moves from the
summary and the bottom panel are routed, the latest learner entry wins,
a move's debugger failure carries the open path's recovery clause, the
host projects the history's first and last sequence and a move refusal
for the transport, Restore works in the composition, and a failed open
of another replay pauses the shown one.
Tests: 27 composition host tests; the Study-pane pins (moves with D8,
F123) changed with their reasons; harness seams receive/receiveContext
follow the composition and constrainStudyGrid takes a group count.
Refs #122
…051, DS-B to DS-E, C2)
The Learning summary shows a test replay in region 2's order with a
step heading and the drawing's step mark (moved by attribute, so the
diagram keeps its scroll), three-line clamps with Show more, and the
summary's focus fallback (step heading, then title). The shared
#recording-transport serves both families: event steps for a test
replay, its keys by event, stop and first or last sequence, a status
line of state and refusals only, and the browser's recovery hidden.
The bottom panel's transport adds 5A's Learning summary button. The
golden's attribute order no longer depends on a race.
Reader DOM: 46 new cases in study-bootstrap-qa.mjs (each case group
recorded on its own when it throws, so a red run reports every group);
the moves-with-D8 pins changed with their reasons.
Refs #122
… only its replay, and the summary reads the replay alone (Cycle 0051)
- Local CodeRabbit CLI (major): two entries at once on a closed reader no
longer end with no replay; entries take turns entering the composition
and the latest one opens.
- Local CodeRabbit CLI (minor): the one-replay-at-a-time answer closes the
browser replay it named, for the latest entry only.
- Native smoke (VS Code 1.142.0): the summary leaves out the saved browser
study behind a test replay, and the recorded-source tab in front of any
group confirms the layout in the summary composition.
- Tests: three host tests and one Reader DOM case, red on a1a7a55; two
case groups publish their own starting state; one assertion that the
harness's ordering made pass is removed.
Refs #122
…ate's scans (Cycle 0051)
The chord and IME case keeps its keys in short-named constants, because a quoted key name in a key field read as a secret-named value. The two timer-retirement waits and the superseded-presentation wait state why their elapsed time is the contract (gstack-timing-ok).
…test replay exceptions stand in helpers of their own (Cycle 0051)
The measured health gate counted the click handler and the message listener above the baseline: the test replay branches raised their complexity over main's, and the transport's two new renderers were high-CRAP functions. Each piece now stands in a helper under the CRAP limit, the click handler and the message listener are below main's complexity, and the page behaves as before (282 Reader DOM cases, page tests).
…ent, as a browser replay's does (Cycle 0051)
Return to Live, a browser study chosen from the summary, and any other step out of the summary composition left the test replay's document in the Learning summary, whose messages the reader no longer accepted, so a stale summary with controls that answered nothing stood beside the chat. Leaving the summary composition now clears the summary for both replay families. Found by the /ship review (Codex structured, pass 2); both tests fail without the fix.
…om the first message (Cycle 0051)
The block's counter was named and started like a revision of its own (regionTwoRevision = 200), which the package test refuses: every revision is revisionAt(n), and only the Saved studies cases keep a counter of their own. The counter now reads as the step it is.

Selecting a browser study can unexpectedly change the maximized panel layout, and message regressions may evade tests. These bounded issues should be followed up before relying on the new replay flow.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 3bf26
Existing restrictions on agent control and replay identity remain in place. No new privilege expansion was identified, but overlapping opens, preview retries, and native-editor recovery are not exhaustively verified.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated expansion is presentation and control within the current editor workspace: test replay gains the existing summary and bottom-panel surfaces. The inspected routes do not establish additional agent authority or cross-service exposure.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Renderer ownership is checked both before and after initialization. Navigation must identify the selected test history, and native inspection requires a recorded stop with matching verified captured source. These controls remain between webview requests and source/debugger presentation.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Preview-conflict recovery uses a modal learner choice and recursively retries the requested history without retaining the original entry ticket. This retry structure predates the PR; the change additionally routes Saved studies through it. A newly introduced security consequence was not established.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Carry the original entry identity through preview resolution and revalidate it before retrying, so recovery explicitly preserves cancellation and latest-selection ownership rather than acquiring a fresh ticket for an older request.

Refs #122 (Cycle 0051, a feature cycle). Plan: the body of #122, approved by
/autoplan(O5).Summary
A saved test replay now opens in the learning-replay composition of the v9 PNG's region 2, as a browser replay already does: the Study pane closes, the Application pane shows the recorded test output above the recorded-source tab, Run and Debug shows the recorded stop, and the Learning summary stands in the chat's place.
codebook_playbackopen of a test replay stays refused (MCP 1.8 unchanged); node-history moves from the Learning summary and the bottom panel are accepted, refused during a browser replay, and late or unknown moves are refused; a failed open gives the Study pane back on Saved studies; leaving the summary composition withdraws the summary's document for both families (9d745e0, found by this ship's review).Step <n> · <label>headings, Show more on the long texts, and a capped diagram height.#recording-transportserves both; test replays get Previous and Next event,<t> s / <total> s, keys by event and stop, Home and End by sequence from any page, and their own six shortcut entries; the bottom panel reads Learning replay and shows only the transport.Compatibility: MCP API 1.8, the bundled skill and every stored format unchanged.
Test Coverage
studyWorkspaceTestReplayComposition.test.ts, 31 tests; 47 new Reader DOM cases; "moves with D8" pins converted with reasons).Pre-Landing Review
Carried (named in #122's closing comment for the next cycle): fixed-time waits in three host tests; two JSDoc blocks above the wrong functions after the refactor; an unanswered one-replay-at-a-time notice holds the entry turn; Close and Return to Live do not invalidate a waiting entry; a stale-revision Saved studies open can leave an empty summary composition; Open replay with the summary and the bottom panel hidden re-shows no UI; a browser study from a test replay's summary bypasses the editor-area deferral; showLearningSummary's identity changes during an open (STALE_PRESENTATION); every move failure is worded as a debugger failure;
forgetUnopenedCompositionand a Reload racing anotheropen()can leave or blank the summary; tagTestReplayDrawing binds marks by SVG sibling order; Show more's expanded state persists across replays;nodeHistoryRefusalis not sanitized at publish; untested state cells (browser replay × another study, × failed open); stale comments. Closed with evidence: an older entry's failed open reporting late (a superseded catch returnssuperseded); the preview retry's revision (intended).Gate edits: 37 listed, 34 read, 0 findings (all "moves with D8" pin conversions with their reasons, and the package test's expected version).
Outside review (Codex gpt-6-astra): structured review GATE PASS in every pass (P2 only); adversarial challenge completed, NO_FINDINGS in the last pass (pass 2's response was unverified by the parser).

studyWorkspace.test.ts(opening a recording retires a saved Node stop)STUDY_REMOVAL_REFUSALS.nodeHistory) instead of retiring it, as Cycle 0051: a test replay opens in the region-2 composition, with the Learning summary in the chat's place, one transport and 5A #122's findings comment recordsAcceptance edits: baseline unavailable (the plan is a GitHub issue body, not tracked in the repository).
