Summary

Opt-in, default-off, anonymous usage data and crash reports, sent straight to PostHog Cloud EU. The spec is docs/ANALYTICS.md (identical in OGAD).

 • Off by default. The SDK is not created until the person opts in. Debug builds never start it.
 • Consent where it arises: an unchecked row on Auto Setup above every button, Settings > Analytics (Usage data, Crash reports, What we share, Report a problem), a prompt after a failure, and a one-time prompt after the first good reply for people who installed before this version.
 • Opt-out shuts the SDK down, drops the queue and resets the anonymous ID. We never call identify. Consent never syncs.
 • Never sent: chat content, file names, paths, URLs, hosts, search terms, private model names. Crash reports are scrubbed (a file name stays only for the app's own code).
 • Report a problem works with analytics on or off. The debug log is now on in store builds (size-capped), so the report is useful. The log holds metadata only.
 • Copy: "Your chats and files never leave your device. Anonymous usage data and crash reports only if you turn them on."

Pro side (funnels, MCP/tool log hygiene, voice copy): https://github.com/off-grid-ai/mobile-pro/pull/93. The pro pointer is at its pushed head 13b52958.

Found and fixed during review and on-device checks

 • The SDK's own lifecycle events were on. "Application Opened" carries the deep-link URL. Now off; only spec events are sent (test asserts the event list).
 • Crash scrubbing kept a person's file names (Taxes2025.pdf). Now <file>.
 • On device: llama.cpp's native log wrote one line per sampled token with the token text ("Grammar still awaiting trigger after token 7932 (` gift`)"). Those lines are now dropped and backtick-quoted text is redacted. The llama fake now emits these lines, and the "no chat text in the log" test caught the leak before the fix.
 • llama.cpp's per-node graph lines (550+ per load) filled the 500-entry Report a problem view. Filtered with the per-tensor noise.

Review fixes (CodeRabbit, SonarCloud)

Remote-server funnel no longer restarts when the editor hides · a regenerate is counted once · the PDF log line drops the path · a refused microphone is stopped, not failed (no consent prompt) · image downloads report their catalog ID · sending the log waits for a running flush · Report a problem hides Clear · crash scrubbing uses sets instead of backtracking regexes · consent changes never reject. SonarCloud quality gate: passed, 0 new issues.

Verification

Gates (run once at the end): tsc 0 · eslint on changed files: 0 errors, no new warnings · knip clean · depcruise clean · analytics + touched suites: 15 suites / 219 tests, then 13 / 98 after the last fixes, all green.

iPhone 17 Pro Max, release build (separate bundle IDs, so no user data touched):

 • Fresh install → Auto Setup unticked → chat: no prompt, log has no chat text.
 • Settings → opt in → chat → opt out → chat (times recorded for the PostHog check).
 • What we share, Report a problem (log file attached in the share sheet), Share sheet.
 • Upgrade over an older 0.0.115 install: no Auto Setup, prompt after the first reply, Share → opted in.

OnePlus CPH2707 (Android), release build:

 • Report a problem puts the log in the message text. The saved text (59 KB, 329 llama.cpp lines) holds none of the prompt or reply.
 • Fresh install unticked → chat; opt in → chat.
 • Foreground kill mid-generation → relaunch (expects unclean_exit); background kill → relaunch (expects none).

PostHog EU proof (HogQL on project 317304, last 4 h; times UTC):

 • iOS fresh install (ai.offgridmobile.analytics-check): first event 12:48:58 (analytics_opted_in, source settings), none earlier although Auto Setup and a chat ran at 12:36. Last event 12:52:17; nothing after the 12:52:35 opt-out, although it chatted again.
 • iOS upgrade from 0.0.115 (ai.offgridmobile.video-check): analytics_opted_in (source first_chat_prompt) 13:04:59, then message and generation events.
 • Android (ai.offgridmobile.analyticscheck): first event 13:23:24 (analytics_opted_in). Exactly one unclean_exit at 13:24:00 (stage generate, SmolLM2-135M, llama.cpp) after the foreground kill; none after the background kill.
 • generation_finished keys: device_class, outcome, model, source, app_version, channel, engine, battery_pct, tokens_per_sec, pro, locale, charging, ram_gb, modality, context_tokens_bucket, os_version, error_code, backend, ttft_ms, platform. No content.
 • No $ip, no GeoIP, no $current_url on any of 82 events.
 • Found there: iOS sent app_opened twice 128 ms apart at a cold launch (iOS passes through inactive). Fixed in afe1b38: only a real return from the background counts; a test covers inactive → active.

Not verified

 • A scrubbed $exception from a real device stack: no in-app path throws an uncaught JS error. Covered by scrub.test.ts and analyticsOwner.test.ts.
 • The failure prompt on device (see above).

Accepted deviations from the spec (CPTO call)

network stays unknown (no NetInfo) · channel = stable for betas · no trial_started · elapsed_ms measured to the next launch · passing Auto Setup counts as asked · Android image engine onnx.

📝 Walkthrough

This change adds opt-in usage analytics and crash reporting, consent and information screens, and problem-log sharing. It instruments app lifecycle, model, generation, download, and user-action events. It also enables persistent debug-log mirroring in all builds, keeps wire capture development-only, and updates privacy disclosures.

Changes: Opt-in analytics and diagnostics

Layer / File(s) Summary
Analytics consent and event collection
src/services/analytics/*, src/stores/appStore.ts, src/config/analytics.ts, src/bootstrap/hookRegistry.ts, package.json, jest.config.js, ios/OffgridMobile/PrivacyInfo.xcprivacy

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

reply_regenerated is over-counted.

track('reply_regenerated') runs before the guard !deps.activeConversationId || !deps.hasActiveModel, so a regenerate that bails out is still counted. The function can also call itself: the ensureReadyOrAlert retry runs void regenerateResponseFn(deps, call). That retry is counted a second time.

Move the call to the point where regeneration actually proceeds, after the readiness check.

Fixed in e9c7556: reply_regenerated is tracked where a regenerate really runs (the image path and after the readiness check), so a bail-out or the not-ready retry is not counted twice.

@alichherawalla The text path now tracks reply_regenerated after the readiness check, which fixes the retry double-counting.

One bail-out still counts: dispatchResolvedTurn returns { handled: true } when ensureTextModelForChat() returns false. The result.handled branch then tracks reply_regenerated, even though no regeneration ran.

Please distinguish an executed image regeneration from the model-unavailable bail-out, and track only the executed regeneration.

Derive the combined checkbox state from both consent flags.

This control represents usage data and crash reports, but its initial state reads only analyticsUsage. Settings allows the two flags to differ. In that state, Auto Setup can show a checked control while crash reports are disabled, or show an unchecked control while crash reports are enabled.

Initialize the state from analyticsUsage && analyticsCrashes, or derive the checked state from both values.

Review comment at @src/screens/AutoSetupScreen.tsx at line 73:
Update the initial value of shareAnalytics in AutoSetupScreen to derive from
both analyticsUsage and analyticsCrashes, so the checkbox is checked only when
both consent flags are enabled; leave the existing consent update behavior
unchanged.

Do not use a code extension as proof that a message filename is app-owned.

When a user path occurs before the first colon, scrubMessage can reduce /Users/me/ClientSecret.ts to ClientSecret.ts. This violates the documented rule that personal filenames become <file>. Keep only known app-owned bundle/source names, or replace uncertain names with <file>.

Review comment at @src/services/analytics/scrub.ts at line 39:
Update scrubMessage so CODE_EXTENSIONS and extensionOf alone do not establish
that a filename is app-owned; preserve only filenames identifiable as known
app-owned bundle or source names, and replace uncertain names—including user
paths reduced to basenames—with <file>.

Redact complete unquoted filenames with spaces.

If an exception value contains Could not open Alice Tax.pdf, userFileToken replaces only Tax.pdf. The scrubbed value still contains Alice. Match and redact the complete filename rather than splitting it into independent whitespace tokens.

Update the scrub logic around userFileToken so unquoted filenames containing
spaces are matched and redacted as a complete filename, rather than split into
whitespace-delimited tokens; ensure values such as “Could not open Alice
Tax.pdf” do not leave part of the filename visible.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Initialize background state when analytics starts.

If analytics stops while the app is backgrounded and starts again while the app is active, inBackground remains true. The next real background transition is ignored. Analytics then misses app_backgrounded and does not call markForeground(false). Initialize inBackground from AppState.currentState when you install the new listener.
