Addressed the staging-location finding in 62c45b4: conversion no longer uses the final sidecar name, so repeated saves in the working directory succeed. All three dtype cases failed before the fix and pass afterward. fd948cb additionally protects model/sidecar filesystem aliases and rollback. Added the missing test docstring; all new helper and test functions have docstrings. Focused validation: 82 tests passed; rebased stack suite: 325 passed. Pre-commit and commit-signature checks passed. Requesting a full review of the current head. |

031f2b5 fixes inline saving when loaded tensors retain EXTERNAL metadata. ONNX performs the conversion; shared metadata-only snapshot/restore helpers preserve the caller on success and failure and avoid a full weight copy. 81191a5 addresses the outside-diff finding in review PRR_kwDOLyRtKc8AAAABT2RzUg: inline serialization now writes to a temporary file in the destination directory, then replaces the model only after the write succeeds. The existing metadata journal still restores caller state in finally. Four regression cases fail before the fix and pass afterward, covering actual partial serialization writes and failed final replacements with and without external metadata; they also verify old-file/sidecar preservation, cleanup and successful retry. Validation: 81 helper tests, 11 protected public-surgery numerical tests, and 335 tests on the rebased integration stack passed. 🟡 Minor · Clear tensor payloads only after the sidecar closes without error. · graph_utils.py:258-270
modelopt/onnx/graph_surgery/utils/graph_utils.py:258-270
🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winClear tensor payloads only after the sidecar closes without error.
_save_external_weightsclears eachraw_datainside the write loop, beforestreamis closed. Buffered writes can remain in user-space memory untilflush()orclose(), so the trailing tensors may not reach the staged sidecar when thewithblock exits. If that flush or close raisesOSError(for example, a full disk or an I/O error on a network mount), those tensors keep noraw_dataand have no bytes on disk.The
except BaseExceptionhandler then restores payloads fromweights_path. The read is short for the unflushed tail, so the handler raisesOSErrorbefore_restore_tensor_storage(states)runs. The caller's model keeps cleared tensors and changed storage metadata. A retry from that object cannot rebuild the lost bytes. The short-read check reports this loss but cannot recover the bytes.Keep each payload until the
withblock exits successfully:Suggested fix
if tensors: # ONNX 1.21 reopens sidecars in Windows text mode, truncating trailing 0x1A. + staged = [] with weights_path.open("wb") as stream: for tensor in tensors: data, offset = tensor.raw_data, stream.tell() stream.write(data) onnx.external_data_helper.set_external_data( tensor, location, offset=offset, length=len(data) ) - payloads.append((tensor, offset, len(data))) - tensor.ClearField("raw_data") + staged.append((tensor, offset, len(data))) del data + # Clear only after the sidecar closes; a failed close keeps the caller's bytes. + for tensor, _, _ in staged: + tensor.ClearField("raw_data") + payloads.extend(staged)With this change, a failed close leaves
payloadsempty and everyraw_dataintact. The handler then restores only metadata. After a successful close, the sidecar is complete, so the existing rollback reads from it correctly. The trade-off is that all external payloads stay resident until the sidecar closes. The current code releases them incrementally.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

4fc0ba4 addresses the outside-diff buffered-sidecar finding from review PRR_kwDOLyRtKc8AAAABT2duaA. Caller raw_data is retained until the binary writer closes successfully, then the completed sidecar becomes the payload rollback source and tensors are cleared. A failed buffered write or close now restores only metadata, preserving the caller bytes without reading an incomplete sidecar. Four real BufferedWriter/FileIO failure cases fail before the fix and pass afterward, covering failures during writing and closing with and without existing external metadata; they verify exact caller/prior-file preservation, cleanup and successful retry. Validation: 96 focused/public numerical tests and 339 tests on the rebased integration stack passed; hooks and signatures passed, and all introduced functions have docstrings. A 256 MiB external-save measurement showed similar additional peak RSS (32.10 MiB after, 32.05 MiB before) and single-run times (0.1466 s after, 0.1487 s before). What does this PR do?
Type of change: new feature
Add
save_onnx_model, a shared save helper for the upcoming DLA pipeline. It supports inline weights or a configurable external sidecar while retaining the model's IR version. A single binary writer avoids ONNX 1.21's Windows trailing-0x1A truncation issue; a TODO removes this workaround when ONNX >= 1.22.0 is required.Inline saves embed loaded payloads even when tensors retain
EXTERNALmetadata. ONNX performs the inline conversion, and a shared metadata-only journal restores the caller infinally, including on write failures. Tensor payloads are not copied into a second model. Inline serialization is staged in the destination directory beforeos.replace, so partial writes and replacement failures preserve an existing model file.Validate loaded tensor payloads and sidecar destinations before mutation. External data must remain inside the output directory, stay distinct from the model, and satisfy ONNX's file-link restrictions. Stage the files and preserve the previous sidecar until model replacement succeeds; replacement failures restore the sidecar and the caller's tensor bytes and storage metadata. Short restoration reads raise an explicit error. Successful external saves retain the documented storage-metadata mutation. Caller payloads remain intact until the binary sidecar writer closes successfully; a failed buffered write or close restores metadata without trying to recover bytes from an incomplete sidecar.
Use separate model and payload staging roots so filename aliases cannot overwrite staged weights. Check filesystem identity after installing the sidecar and roll back an alias before writing the model. Reject NTFS alternate data streams before filesystem changes.
Repeated saves also work when the output directory is the working directory. Conversion uses a temporary location; the final sidecar name is assigned while writing the staged payloads. Existing converters and public surgeries retain their implementations.
Usage
Testing
io.BufferedWriter/FileIOpair during writing or closing, with and without pre-existing external metadata. All four fail before deferred clearing; afterward they verify exact caller and prior-file preservation, cleanup and successful retry.Tests used Hugging Face offline mode; repository-wide conftest/addopts were disabled while test-module fixtures and numerical inference still ran.
