Add an internal conversion for supported 5D Reshape patterns followed by Transpose/final Reshape or a single-axis reduction. Replace them with slice-based 4D branches, including supported Clip and per-tensor QDQ middleware. Part 6/17 depends on part 5; merge the stack from the bottom upward. Public registration follows in part 16.
The transpose rewrite requires default-domain ONNX opset 10 or newer because it emits input-based Slice. Older input-form patterns are refused before replacement; legacy attribute-form Reshape nodes are skipped. Reshape targets and reduction axes must be fixed graph initializers; runtime-overridable defaults are refused without changing caller state. Pattern matching respects operation domains and overloads; middleware traversal reuses the graph cache consumer index during planning. Custom Reshape candidates remain intact, and unsupported custom followers are refused. Shared/overlapping paths and unavailable final shapes are rejected; planning errors restore added initializers and inference metadata. Generated names use the existing graph cache allocator, preserving original controls and public tensor names. Final reshape copied dimensions retain their original 5D meaning, and legacy Clip bounds are preserved.
QDQ validation requires scale and zero-point controls with proven scalar rank, including runtime-overridable defaults. Omitted optional controls remain supported. A one-dimensional control of shape [1] is per-axis under the ONNX schema, so it is refused alongside larger vectors and unknown-rank controls before replacement. Computed controls require inferred or declared scalar metadata. Only graphs needing late-control ordering use the existing dependency-aware order, with in-place protobuf sorting that preserves Constant payload objects. If symbolic inference drops an output shape, the declared output type is retained.
Source size: 735 added lines. This is the agreed self-contained reshape conversion: its classifier, branch builders and validation must land together to provide a usable pass.
Planning now checks lexical subgraph captures against removed and recreated outputs before any batch replacement. Captured middleware is refused within the existing initializer/metadata rollback scope; captured terminal outputs remain supported.
Latest restacked validation: 1168 passed. The updated 66-case module passes. Ten new nested-capture cases execute valid native graphs; eight intermediate-capture cases fail against the preceding source, while both terminal-capture cases remain supported. Refusals preserve caller serialization byte-for-byte.
Windows CPU, Python 3.10.11, ONNX 1.23.2 and ONNX Runtime 1.22.0: 1076 restacked integration/public-surgery regressions pass. Earlier focused and branch runs passed 56 and 350 cases on ONNX 1.21.0.
Before/after proofs cover the initial 11 correctness cases, two name-collision cases, legacy Clip bounds, eight dynamic-control ordering cases, six implicit per-axis refusal cases, three custom-function cases, five legacy-schema cases, and six runtime-overridable structural-input cases. Source bytes were restored after each proof.
New refusal cases start from graphs accepted by full ONNX checking and executed by the reference evaluator, then require unchanged caller state. Positive cases compare exact output values; the collision fixture uses schema-valid scalar controls. The new control-shape test covers initializer/input/symbolic controls, overridable defaults, DQ-only controls and zero-point-only metadata. The custom-function test covers candidate preservation and follower refusal. Duplicate numerical tests were consolidated.
Eight scalar/vector cases exercise transpose and reduce patterns where the default-axis length changes from 1 to 3. Scalar controls lower and execute with exact values on ONNX ReferenceEvaluator and ORT; one-dimensional [1] controls refuse without changing caller state. The preceding implementation gives 6 failures and 50 passes on the updated 56-case suite. Runtime permissiveness does not establish schema validity. Decomposition docstrings describe the algorithms and link to the inference utility.
All 36 source/test functions have docstrings; repository hooks pass, commits are signed off, and signatures verify.
A checked 10,128-node graph with 32 reshape/QDQ/reduce patterns, 10,000 metadata entries and 64 MiB of weights took 0.718 s with repeated consumer scans and 0.081 s with cached lookups. Sampled additional peak RSS was 8.70/8.66 MiB; weights were preserved. A further scalar-rank guard comparison takes 0.0813/0.0809 seconds with 8.84/8.74 MiB extra sampled RSS. These are single CPU measurements.
Earlier single CPU samples: a 10,004-node QDQ graph with 10,000 unrelated initializers and 64 MiB of weights took 0.0526 s before the cached shape guard and 0.0530 s after, with 14.32/13.53 MiB additional sampled peak RSS. A 10,005-node late-control graph with 64 MiB of initializer weights and a 64 MiB Constant took 0.0621 s with 8.11 MiB additional peak RSS; the Constant object and bytes were preserved in place. Walkthrough
Adds an ONNX transform for supported 5D Reshape chains ending in Transpose or a reduce operation. The transform validates chains, builds 4D replacement branches, and applies them. Tests cover output parity, graph structure, middleware, and refusal cases.

Candidate discovery and planning modelopt/onnx/graph_surgery/dla_transforms/dla_5d_reshape_to_4d.py, tests/unit/onnx/graph_surgery/dla_transforms/test_dla_5d_reshape_to_4d.py
Identifies 5D Reshape candidates and supported follower chains, including Clip and unshared per-tensor Q→DQ middleware. Optionally runs symbolic shape inference, validates replacement plans, and restores graph metadata if planning fails. Tests cover captures, refusal cases, and unchanged non-candidate graphs.
Validates input dimensions and transpose permutations. Builds sliced 4D branches with duplicated middleware, concatenates them, and applies the final reshape. Tests compare outputs and cover reshape dimensions, Clip and QDQ controls, name collisions, and refusal cases.

test_reduce_with_clip_ort_matches_reference and test_clip_duplicated_per_branch use the same model. Both compare ORT output with atol=0. The second test only adds the Clip count check. test_reduce_with_clip_ort_matches_reference also repeats the "no Split" assertion from the ReduceMin test. Combine them into one test that checks parity and the per-branch Clip count. You can also fold the negative-axis check into the ReduceMin test, which uses the same model and rewrite.
As per coding guidelines: "Default to one test per behavior" and "don't add a per-branch test for a helper that a higher-level test already exercises."

Reject a 5D Reshape that an earlier plan already removes.
The transpose builder puts the final Reshape (r2) in to_remove (dla_5d_reshape_to_4d.py:376). Its docstring allows that final Reshape to have "any rank" (line 217). If r2 has a 5D shape initializer, the loop at lines 617-625 also visits it as a candidate. The candidate check looks only at the shape initializer length (lines 107-114). The cache and the node snapshot are not updated between plans.
For Reshape1 → Transpose1 → Reshape2(5D) → Transpose2 → Reshape3, the second plan:
Treats Reshape2 as reshape_node.
Slices Reshape2.input[0], which is Transpose1's output (lines 272 and 324).
Relies on a tensor that the first plan removes, because Transpose1 is in the first plan's to_remove (line 376).
The rewritten graph then contains a dangling input. The slice-axis check in _infer_transpose_path_slice_axis (lines 190-194) does not stop this case when the leading dimension equals the slice count.
Track the nodes that earlier plans remove, and raise before a later plan consumes one. The loop runs before batch_replace_nodes (line 627), so this check leaves the graph unmodified.

@mgohil-png The current code addresses the overlap finding. It checks consumed node identities before dispatch and rejects overlapping candidates before batch_replace_nodes.
The regression test covers both inference settings. It asserts byte-identical caller state after refusal and repeats the call to check retry behavior. I inspected the test but did not run it.
AGENTS.md prohibits agent thread resolution, so I will leave this thread open for human resolution.
