What does this PR do?

Type of change: new feature

Convert supported MatMul/Gemm patterns into transpose/convolution subgraphs with the required weight and bias layouts. Standalone invocation includes its rank-promotion fallback; the ordered pipeline explicitly defers rank promotion to the later rank stages.

Part 8/17. Depends on part 7; merge from the bottom of the stack upward.

Usage

from modelopt.onnx.graph_surgery.dla_transforms.dla_matmul_to_transpose_conv_transpose import _apply_matmul_to_transpose_conv_transpose

# model is an onnx.ModelProto with the supported input pattern.
model = _apply_matmul_to_transpose_conv_transpose(model)

This is an internal pass; the public pipeline is registered in part 16.

Testing

  • Validated on this branch's current commit on Windows CPU with Python 3.10 and ONNX 1.21.0: 9 passed, 1 warning.
  • Supported MatMul/Gemm layouts, shared weights, bias handling, unsupported patterns, and numerical equivalence.
  • Repository pre-commit hooks passed for this slice; the commit is signed off and its SSH signature was verified.
python -m pytest tests/unit/onnx/graph_surgery/dla_transforms/test_dla_matmul_to_transpose_conv_transpose.py --noconftest -o addopts= -q --tb=short --durations=5

Tests ran with Hugging Face offline mode and without the repository-wide conftest/addopts; test-module fixtures still ran. GPU execution and DLA compilation were not run. The final stacked branch also passed the combined focused suite: 317 passed, 2 warnings.

Before your PR is "Ready for review"

  • Backward compatible: yes; this slice adds DLA-specific functionality.
  • Third-party code/new runtime dependencies: no new runtime dependency; contribution and security guidance reviewed.
  • Necessary tests: included for this slice, with focused synthetic fixtures.
  • Changelog: public feature entry follows in part 16.
  • Claude approval: pending for the current commit. Submitted as a draft.

Additional Information

Base branch: dla/review-07-logged-casts-dequantization-and-reshape-stages. Review this slice against that branch; subsequent slices are reviewed separately.

Merge order: PR1 (merged) → Part 2/17 → Part 3/17 → Part 4/17 → Part 5/17 → Part 6/17 → Part 7/17 → Part 8/17 → Part 9/17 → Part 10/17 → Part 11/17 → Part 12/17 → Part 13/17 → Part 14/17 → Part 15/17 → Part 16/17 → Part 17/17

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • DLA model conversion now supports eligible MatMul and Gemm operations by converting them to transpose-convolution operations.
    • Support includes 2D, 3D, and 4D activations, applicable transposition settings and biases, and quantized weights.
    • Models with unsupported operation configurations continue through the existing fallback handling.

📝 Walkthrough

The DLA compatibility pipeline now applies a MatMul-to-transpose-convolution transform. The transform converts eligible MatMul and Gemm nodes, applies rank handling to other nodes, and includes cases for static, dynamic, and dequantized weights.

Changes: DLA MatMul conversion

Layer / File(s) Summary
Eligibility and weight handling
modelopt/onnx/graph_surgery/dla_transforms/dla_matmul_to_transpose_conv_transpose.py
The transform checks Gemm attributes and tensor shapes. For eligible nodes, it reshapes static weights and clones shared initializers or dequantized outputs when needed.
Convolution rewrite and rank fallback
modelopt/onnx/graph_surgery/dla_transforms/dla_matmul_to_transpose_conv_transpose.py
Eligible MatMul and Gemm nodes become Unsqueeze–Transpose–Conv–Transpose–Squeeze subgraphs. Ineligible nodes receive 4-D rank promotion, subject to the deferred-conversion setting.
DLA pipeline and parity tests
modelopt/onnx/graph_surgery/make_dla_compatible.py, tests/unit/onnx/graph_surgery/dla_transforms/test_dla_matmul_to_transpose_conv_transpose.py
The DLA pipeline invokes the transform with deferred rank conversion before shape inference. Tests check graph structure and compare original and transformed model outputs with ONNX Runtime.

The new MatMul/Gemm conversion can produce invalid graphs: dynamic-weight Gemm nodes get rank-4 inputs, and rank-2/3 activations in the ordered pipeline get 4-D operators without rank promotion. The public pipeline is not exposed yet, but these defects should be fixed or explicitly deferred before merge.

Move the unjustified in-function imports to module scope or add a reason comment.

The tests/**/*.py instructions allow in-function imports only for circular-import or optional-dependency reasons, and each such import needs a comment that names the reason. Three imports in this file lack one.

  • Line 83, import onnxruntime as ort in _run_ort: line 56 already guards onnxruntime with pytest.importorskip. A module-scope import after that guard is safe. The type: ignore comment does not state a runtime reason.
  • Line 114, import contextlib in _save_test_pair: this is a standard-library module and needs no deferred import.
  • Lines 127-129, SymbolicShapeInference: this import sits inside the try block that catches Exception, so a missing onnxruntime.tools module falls back to the model without symbolic shape inference. A module-scope import would instead fail test collection. Keep this import local and name the reason.

The rank fallback promotes Gemm inputs to 4-D. Gemm accepts only 2-D A/B.

ineligible_nodes includes Gemm nodes. A Gemm is ineligible when its weight is dynamic, for example a graph input or a node output. The fallback then Unsqueezes both inputs to 4-D (standalone mode) or the graph-input weight (deferred mode, Lines 223/233). The ONNX Gemm spec requires rank-2 A and B, so the rewritten node is invalid. ORT session creation and shape inference fail.

The fallback also ignores transA/transB. Padding with leading 1-dims is only valid for MatMul's batched broadcasting semantics.

Restrict the fallback to MatMul. Alternatively, lower Gemm to MatMul plus Add before promotion.

Preserve rank conversion for eligible deferred nodes.

DLA_TRANSFORMS enables defer_rank_conversion=True before ShapeInference. For an eligible rank-2 or rank-3 activation, the conversion skips both rank adapters, then emits 4-D Transpose and Conv operations. The output also remains 4-D without the required Squeeze. This violates the operators' rank contracts and may cause shape inference or model validation to reject the graph.

Remove the deferral guard from the eligible conversion until rank promotion runs before this stage. Add a 2-D eligible case through _transform_make_dla_compatible.

Write test artifacts to tmp_path, not into the repository tree.

_save_test_pair writes ONNX files under <repo>/scratch_space/matmul_conv_test_models/ on each run. This adds untracked files to the working tree, and the write fails on a read-only checkout.

Pass pytest's tmp_path fixture to the helper. If the saved pairs are not needed for offline inspection, remove the save step.
